Book The Making of the German Post War Economy

Download or read book The Making of the German Post War Economy written by Christian L. Glossner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02-28 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years following the end of World War II in Germany were a significant period of change and upheaval. This book on the economic reconstruction of post-war West Germany traces the development of economic and socio-political ideas, and their gradual absorption by mainstream politicians, officials and the general public during the period of transition between 1945 and 1949. In the aftermath of World War II, several German think-tanks, political parties and individuals gave impulse to and then shaped the development of a viable socio-political and economic model between the extremes of laissez-faire capitalism and the collectivist planned economy. In their endeavours to bring into effect their particular economic ideas - often diametrically opposed to one another - the parties of left and right stimulated not only academic and political debate, but also public debate about the political and economic reconstruction of occupied post-war Germany. While all the various neo-liberal approaches assigned to the people sovereign and decisive status in the institutional economic order, and recognised the interdependence of politics, economics and the public, one particular school of economic thought outpaced the others in communicating a model of coordinated economic and social policy, namely the Social Market Economy. Christian Glossner here investigates whether or not it was primarily the subtlety of the political campaign for this model that led to its implementation by the then Economic Council and eventual validation by the German electorate. The programmes published by the principal academic and political groups of the time and the practical day-to-day decisions of the first parliament in post-war Germany are analysed with reference to popular preferences. By examining both the formative involvement of German parties in post-war reconstruction and the role of the public during the process of economic liberalisation, this book provides explanations for why the Social Market Economy prevailed as the socio-political and economic model for the Federal Republic of Germany. It will be of interest to scholars of German, economic and twentieth-century history.

Book The Dutch and German Communist Left 1900 68

Download or read book The Dutch and German Communist Left 1900 68 written by Philippe Bourrinet and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dutch-German Communist Left, represented by the German KAPD-AAUD, the Dutch KAPN and the Bulgarian Communist Workers Party, separated from the Comintern (1921) on questions like electoralism, trade-unionism, united fronts, the one-party state and anti-proletarian violence. It attracted the ire of Lenin, who wrote his Left Wing Communism, An Infantile Disorder against the Linkskommunismus, while Herman Gorter wrote a famous response in his pamphlet Reply to Lenin. The present volume provides the most substantial history to date of this tendency in the twentieth-century Communist movement. It covers how the Communist left, with the KAPD-AAU, denounced 'party communism' and 'state capitalism' in Russia; how the German left survived after 1933 in the shape of the Dutch GIK and Paul Mattick’s councils movement in the USA; and also how the Dutch Communistenbond Spartacus continued to fight after 1942 for the world power of the workers councils, as theorised by Pannekoek in his book Workers’ Councils (1946).

Book Would You Have Shouted Heil Hitler

Download or read book Would You Have Shouted Heil Hitler written by François Roux and published by Max Milo. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 887 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If a deep and lasting crisis shook our democracies, as happened to German society from 1929 to 1933, would we be able to resist the fascist temptation? On January 31, 1933, thirty-two million Germans, who had not voted Nazi woke up caught in the trap of dictatorship. How did they behave under the new power? How did they react to the suppression of freedoms, to the recruitment, to the anti-Semitic persecutions, to the march towards war? What compromises were necessary to survive? Was it possible not to collaborate with the Third Reich? Was it possible to resist it, and how? By comparing more than two hundred testimonies with the works of the greatest historians of this period, François Roux carries out a panoramic study of the history of Nazism and the Germans, from 1918 to 1946. He also forces us to challenge our preconceived notions—yes, thousands of Germans died resisting Hitler's Reich, and, no, the majority of them did not want this regime. By making us face the choices they had to make, this book gives us an intimate, almost physical understanding of the relationship between dictatorship and its subjects, and tells us a story that could one day be our own. François Roux has studied cognitive psychology. For the past twelve years, he has been exploring the mechanisms of submission and resistance of individuals and groups in situations of extreme duress. A regular contributor to the history magazine Gavroche, François Roux has published La Grande guerre inconnue ; les poilus contre l'armée française (Ed. Max Chaleil, 2006). Since 2007 he has been working as a consultant in the field of organization and management for the professional branch of the book trade.
