Download or read book Feel written by Freddie Spencer and published by Random House. This book was released on 2017-04-20 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feel is the story of how a small-time boy from humble beginnings in Louisiana rose to the pantheon of greats, to win the 500cc and 250cc GP Championship in the same year – an historic achievement over three decades ago which has never been repeated. Growing up at the time of the assassination of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Freddie judged by feel, not by colour. Blind to prejudice and discrimination, he formed dynamic connections with people and events, but only years later during his racing afterlife could Freddie come to understand the true power of the things he learned. Spencer is an articulate and compassionate guide as he describes the thrill and horror of racing in an era when death was a perennial threat. He recalls in pin-sharp detail the frenetic high-octane racing duels with the ‘King’ Kenny Roberts, but also describes a parallel internal journey as he struggled to make sense of it all. Driven by a search for the personal fulfilment that comes through finding your purpose, Freddie’s story is a universal one. In its message of hope, Feel transcends its genre to offer a story for everyone. Part thriller, part philosophical self-exploration, it is a remarkably insightful account of what it is like to have it all, but wonder why. “For the first time I will talk about the traumas of my childhood, the contrast between the leaf fire burns, the mistrust and discomfort and the peace and purpose I felt when riding my bike. I didn’t tell my parents about something that happened to me. Why? I felt ashamed, but when I rode I felt connected to everything and the pain in my hand and heart would go away. It gave me the feeling of hope”.

Book excerpt: I was sitting on a wet bike in frigid water, watching waves the size of three-story buildings slide toward me, hump up, then hump up again getting even taller before crashing down with a sound like a Las Vegas casino imploding. I could be in one of those casinos, a fancy one, too, because they liked me and wanted me to work for them, or I could be on Wall Street moving around billion-dollar chunks of money. But instead I was here, cold and anxious and very soon I'd have to drive the wet bike in front of one of these waves, dragging a beautiful redhead behind me on the end of a towline, and if -- when--she fell I'd have to go get her. Or die trying. That was the part I didn't like, the "die trying." My name is T. R. Macdonald and believe it or not this was the good part. People hadn't started stuffing me in the trunks of cars or shooting at me. Yet.

Book excerpt: Present urban planning issues require to involve the public in the urban design process, and this slow and complicated process remains the primary domain of expert planners and consultants. Although there have been many attempts to leverage new mobile tools to engage the community. These tools support the three stages of planning 1. data collection 2. analysis and visualization three solutions. Within these tools, some gather unstructured data that is hard to convert into physical interventions. Also, some applications are not designed to encourage debate and consensus building. This study will consider how a structured integrated tool will help the process of grassroots urban design. This thesis will focus on the development of a bottom-up, crowd-sourced, urban planning tool to improve the quality and safety of urban bike lanes. A mobile application will be developed to enable non-experts to actively participate in the process of real time data collection and feedback, mapping, selection of solutions, and the establishment of priorities. The system will be evaluated using both quantitative and qualitative methods, compared to present methods on bottom up interventions.

Book excerpt: You have to read closely so as not to miss significant clues in these tightly coiled stories by Katherine Anne Porter Prize-winner Johnston (Never So Green), who ventures deeply into the consciousness of Midwesterners to unearth old tensions and buried animosities. In Water, he balances a marvelously multilayered plot involving a widowed mother of now grown twin boys (one healthy, one not) who recognizes how her protectiveness of her sons--even if one commits a horrible crime--supersedes the ties she holds to her past. Dirt Men finds Buddy Jr., the son of a local excavating entrepreneur, returned home in disgrace from the Colorado college where he was teaching and trapped within the intersection of his past and his hubris when the dismembered body of a woman is found in an auto salvage lot. In Things Go Missing, Johnston enters the mind of a young woman burglar whose seemingly senseless thefts (such as her shrink's autographed Michael Jordan poster) allows her to connect finally with someone, despite the pain she inflicts. These beautifully rendered tales deliver an emotional wallop.

Book THE WALNUT WARRIORS MOTOCROSS

Download or read book THE WALNUT WARRIORS MOTOCROSS written by Lance L. Palmgren and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-02-28 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under a clear, sunny sky, early arrival spectator Nuts eagerly and excitedly began to fill the Grandstand: every other Misty Forest inhabitant followed. It was opening day for the First Annual Walnut Warrior Motocross Race. Anticipation electrified the air; cheering and shell clacking wafted over the track and into the Pits. Walnut Warriors were kick-starting their machines to slowly roll toward the line-up at the Starting Gate. Prior the start of the race, over the megaphone, Nick Nutley, the Announcer, boomed a fond Welcome Greeting to all and proceeded to discuss the racing rules and 'dicey' track conditions: steep hills, long high jumps, deep triple ruts, off-camber hairpin turns, and whoop-de-doos. As if that were not thrilling enough, there were several highly dangerous sections of track unrevealed to the spectators. . . these hazards would only be fully described as racers approached each peril or menace. Nutley secretly wondered if any riders would actually be able to finish the race. He solemnly reasoned any elsewhere but the courageous Walnut Warriors would have no chance. Riders braced, slightly hunched over their handlebars; engines screamed with clutch levers-in, front brakes held, and throttles wide-open – all waiting the last seconds before the Starting Gate dropped – no rider dared blink. Readers, emotionally exhausted, discover which Riders and bikes, if any, conquer all obstacles and cross the triple-jump Finish Line. They won't tell, will you?
