Book Big Trifles and Little People

Download or read book Big Trifles and Little People written by Anatol M. Kotenev and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 1999-12 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Big Trifles and Little People is a remarkable collection of reminiscences about a fascinating time in Russia—a time of Tsar Nicolas II, head of the great Romanov family, and of the Bolshevik revolution. But it was the view of the author that “little people, trifles and personal memories have the right to be heard, just as the feats of the great.” With that in mind, he unfolds a narrative of joy, terror and ultimately, of his triumph of will over the forces which drove him from the homeland of his noble forefathers. The description of the fancy dress balls at Elizabethgrad Cavalry College, where he trained to become an officer with the Cossack Cavalry, is lilting and full of color. The surprisingly luxurious life of the Russian officers in the wilds of China is unfolded in wonderful detail. The description of the instant he was shot and crippled for life in the Russo-Japanese war is gripping and unforgettable. The book focuses on encounters with the “little” people such as Shick, the Jewish scribe; Kaloev, the Muslim tea salesman; Zhao, proprietor of the Fudzian stock market; and Kate, an American prostitute. However, encounters with the “great” people are not ignored. These include personal meetings with the Empress Dowager of China, with Tsar Nicolas II and even with Rasputin. Big Trifles and Little People provides a rare opportunity to experience the “real” Russia of the early twentieth century as recalled by an astute observer of the times.

Book excerpt: Through the MOONgate is the true story of a young woman’s life in China. A life of privilege and poverty, of romance and adventure, of humor and sorrow, but most of all a life filled with unforgettable characters tempered by the forces of revolution. Muse was born in Siberia as her parents fled from the Russian revolution, and grew up in Shanghai, where her family found refuge, and later in the fascinating European colony of Tsingtao. Vivid in description are her recollections of times in China during Japan’s occupation including an encounter with Mao Tse-tung in the mountains of Laoshan. Tragically widowed at an early age, the she overcame incredible obstacles to create a new life for herself and her two young children. As communist forces seized power in China, they escaped on the last ship to leave the port of Tsingtao for the United States of America. Through the MOONgate is an adventure and a glimpse into a human life courageously lived.

Book The Sum of Trifles

Download or read book The Sum of Trifles written by Julia Ridley Smith and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Julia Ridley Smith’s parents died, they left behind a virtual museum of furniture, books, art, and artifacts. Between the contents of their home, the stock from their North Carolina antiques shop, and the ephemera of two lives lived, Smith faced a monumental task. What would she do with her parents’ possessions? Smith’s wise and moving memoir in essays, The Sum of Trifles, peels back the layers of meaning surrounding specific objects her parents owned, from an eighteenth-century miniature to her father’s prosthetics. A vintage hi-fi provides a view of her often tense relationship with her father, whose love of jazz kindled her own artistic impulse. A Japanese screen embodies her mother’s principles of good taste and good manners, while an antebellum quilt prompts Smith to grapple with her family’s slaveholding legacy. Along the way, she turns to literature that illuminates how her inheritance shaped her notions of identity and purpose. The Sum of Trifles offers up dark humor and raw feeling, mixed with an erudite streak. It’s a curious, thoughtful look at how we live in and with our material culture and how we face our losses as we decide what to keep and what to let go.

Book Forever Summer

  • Author : Nigella Lawson
  • Publisher : Knopf Canada
  • Release : 2013-02-05
  • ISBN : 0307363988
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Forever Summer written by Nigella Lawson and published by Knopf Canada. This book was released on 2013-02-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s sensuous summer all year long with Nigella -- in a fabulous new cookbook that draws on the best from all over the world: to tie in with her new 8-part television series. Summer food doesn’t have to be eaten just in summer. Even on our coldest days, indeed especially then, we need to summon up a little warmth on our plate. Summer cooking is relaxed cooking that conjures up a mood of sunny expansiveness: easy cooking, easy eating. No one wants to slave over a hot stove for hours: the keynote, as ever with Nigella, is simplicity. The ideal is of lazy abundance. The food of Italy and Spain, the fragrant mezze of the Eastern Mediterranean, the traditional strawberries-and-cream feel of an English summer afternoon: all these notes and flavours are reflected in Forever Summer. The uniting force is attitude as well as palate so the food is far-reaching but personalised, and fresh so that it fits in with the way we live. It’s a way of celebrating summer while it lasts, and extending it into the months beyond. Forever Summer has the practical appeal of a cookbook as well as the aspirational lure of a travel book, the sort one might flick through longingly in winter, dreaming of much-needed sunshine.
