Book The Imagination of Plants

Download or read book The Imagination of Plants written by Matthew Hall and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the role of plants in botanical mythology, from Aboriginal Australia to Zoroastrian Persia. Plants have a remarkable mythology dating back thousands of years. From the ancient Greeks to contemporary Indigenous cultures, human beings have told colorful and enriching stories that have presented plants as sensitive, communicative, and intelligent. This book explores the myriad of plant tales from around the world and the groundbreaking ideas that underpin them. Amid the key themes of sentience and kinship, it connects the anemone to the meaning of human life, tree hugging to the sacred basil of India, and plant intelligence with the Finnish epic The Kalevala. Bringing together commentary, original source material, and colorful illustrations, Matthew Hall challenges our perspective on these myths, the plants they feature, and the human beings that narrate them. “Whether or not we believe that any plant actually has an imagination, the rhetorical flourish in Matthew Hall’s title sends us into his book with a serious interest in what he has to say. This is a valuable addition to our knowledge about mythic tale-telling and awareness of those elements of the animate world that science, since the Renaissance, has always placed on the lowest scale of value. Hall wants to redress this imbalance, and he does so by revealing just how essential (to Indigenous cultures) the plant kingdom was to humanity’s place in the universe.” — Ashton Nichols, author of Beyond Romantic Ecocriticism: Toward Urbanatural Roosting

Book Arrest the Music

Download or read book Arrest the Music written by Tejumola Olaniyan and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-29 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Olaniyan has given us a profound and beautifully integrated book which culminates in a persuasive interpretation of the relationship between Fela's apparently incompatible presentational selves.... The book's accessible and evocative prose is in itself a kind of homage to Fela's continual ability to seduce and astonish.... This is such an attractive book you feel like... ransacking your collection for Fela tapes." -- Karin Barber "... an indispensable companion to Fela's music and a rich source of information for studies in modern African popular music." -- Akin Euba Arrest the Music! is a lively musical study of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, one of Africa's most recognizable, popular, and controversial musicians. The flamboyant originator of the "Afrobeat" sound and self-proclaimed voice of the voiceless, Fela used music, sharp-tongued lyrics, and derisive humor to challenge the shortcomings of Nigerian and postcolonial African states. Looking at the social context, instrumentation, lyrics, visual art, people, and organizations through which Fela produced his music, Tejumola Olaniyan offers a wider, more suggestive perspective on Fela and his impact on listeners in all parts of the world. Placing Fela front and center, Olaniyan underscores important social issues such as authenticity, racial and cultural identity, the relationship of popular culture to radical politics, and the meaning of postcolonialism, nationalism, and globalism in contemporary Africa. Readers interested in music, culture, society, and politics, whether or not they know Fela and his music, will find this work invaluable for understanding the career of an African superstar and the politics of popular culture in contemporary Africa. Book The Heart of Life

Download or read book The Heart of Life written by Jez Hughes and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-27 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Heart of Life is an exploration into the depths of what it means to be alive, when the ‘cellophane packaging we wrap around life to keep it safe and sterile has been unwrapped and discarded’. It reveals how the ancient path of shamanism and indigenous wisdom can offer us solutions to the many problems facing the modern world, both global and collective. It offers a unique cosmology that explores how these problems, from potential global ecological catastrophe to the multitude of mental and physical illnesses afflicting individuals, are intrinsically linked and how they can be treated. How the soul sickness that is affecting the modern world may well be the initiation we are going through as a species. This is illustrated through the personal and professional experiences of contemporary shaman Jez Hughes, who cured himself successfully of convulsive fits and mental illnesses using shamanic methods and has since gone on to treat thousands of people in the same way.

Book Crises of Imagination Crises of Power

Download or read book Crises of Imagination Crises of Power written by Max Haiven and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-13 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, when it seems like everything has been privatized, when austerity is too often seen as an economic or political problem that can be solved through better policy, and when the idea of moral values has been commandeered by the right, how can we re-imagine the forces used as weapons against community, solidarity, ecology and life itself? In this stirring call to arms, Max Haiven argues that capitalism has colonized how we all imagine and express what is valuable. Looking at the decline of the public sphere, the corporatization of education, the privatization of creativity, and the power of finance capital in opposition to the power of the imagination and the growth of contemporary social movements, Haiven provides a powerful argument for creating an anti-capitalist commons. Capitalism is not in crisis, it is the crisis, and moving beyond it is the only key to survival. Crucial reading for all those questioning the imposition of austerity and hoping for a fairer future beyond it.

Download or read book Incredible Phillip Island written by Peter Coyne and published by Peter Coyne. This book was released on 2009-12-08 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An outstanding and spectacular example of the devastation which feral animals – pigs, goats and rabbits – can cause, and the ecological restoration which can be achieved with hard work and frequent risks. Access to this remote island was difficult and often dangerous and all materials had be unloaded from the boat onto slippery rocks, handled up the surrounding cliffs and back-packed across the island. Diverse eradication techniques, using swimming, rock-climbing and archery for inaccessible sites, removed the last of the feral grazers. Revegetation and faunal recovery have been remarkable. This small island is the only natural habitat of some of the world’s rarest plant species. One was unknown to science previously, another was believed extinct, while a third has only one genetic individual in the wild. The number of bird species on the island has doubled. This book describes the geological, natural and human history of the island, the pest eradication program, and the extraordinary environmental response. It was very favourably reviewed in the international journal Restoration Ecology in 2014. Prices are for PDF file version. Paperback version also available.
