Book Uplift of the Bighorn Mountains Wyoming and Montana

Download or read book Uplift of the Bighorn Mountains Wyoming and Montana written by C. E. Whipkey and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluvial and lacustrine-dominated clastic sedimentary rocks as thick as 1,800 m (6,000 ft) comprise the Paleocene Fort Union Formation and the Eocene Wasatch Formation of the western Powder River Basin in northeastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana. The systematic mineralogy of 45 samples of channel-fill sandstone from this sequence reflects the uplift and erosion of the Bighorn Mountains. Samples were collected to study vertical changes in the mineralogy of lower Tertiary sandstones adjacent to the Bighorn Mountains, lateral variations in the composition of the upper Paleocene Tongue River Member of the Fort Union Formation along the eastern front of the mountains, and variations in the composition of equivalent upper Paleocene sandstones of the central and western parts of the basin. Vertical changes in the mineralogy of a succession of Paleocene and Eocene sandstone units adjacent to the Bighorn Mountains most likely were produced by uplift and sequential erosion of the rocks that formerly overlaid the mountains. Uplift probably began in the middle Paleocene, during deposition of the Lebo Member of the Fort Union Formation, and continued into the Eocene. Differences in the mineralogy of the sandstone units along the western edge of the Powder River Basin that correspond to differences in the rock types now exposed along the crest of the Bighorn Mountains suggest that much of the erosional degradation of the Bighorn Mountains occurred during an early Tertiary tectonic episode. Lateral changes in the suite of unstable detrital grains within the Tongue River Member are compatible with facies and paleotransport studies that indicate a substantial eastward flux of detritus of early Tertiary age from the Bighorn Mountains into the central Powder River Basin.

Book excerpt: Big Horn City was the first town established in 1881 in what later became Sheridan County, Wyoming. Nestled in the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains, it is no wonder the Crow and Sioux Indian tribes coveted the Little Goose Valley for its abundance of wild game. Sheridan County's first white resident and founder of the town of Big Horn City was Oliver Perry Hanna. Numerous immigrants soon found their way to Big Horn City along the Bozeman Trail to begin a new life. The Bozeman Trail Museum, which serves as a place for local families to share their collectibles, was a blacksmith shop on the Bozeman Trail.

Book Range Investigations Bighorn National Forest Wyoming Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Range Investigations Bighorn National Forest Wyoming Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Richard M. Hurd and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-21 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Range Investigations, Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming, Vol. 1 The Bighorn National Forest is located in north central wyoming, being bounded on the north by the Montana state line (fig. The Forest is entirely within the Big Horn Mountains, although this mountain range extends A0 to 50 miles south and 10 miles north of the Forest boundary. As a result, not more than an estimated two - thirds of the mountain range is within the Forest. South of the Forest, the Big Horn Mountains join the high eastawest range of the Bridger and Owl Creek Mountains. North of the Forest boundary, the Big Horn Mountains end at the canyon of the Big Horn River, north of which the same uplift is continued in the Pryor Mountains, a range of moderate elevation which extends but a short distance (q). In general, the eastern edge of the Forest follows along the face of the mountains, but the western boundary often is above feet on sedimentary formations sloping toward the Big Horn Basin. Underlying the soil mantle and in places outcropping on the surface are both granitic and sedimentary rocks. The granites are extensively exposed in the high mountain areas where the sedimentary layers have been entirely cut away and glacial activity is clearly evident (q). The sedimentary layers consist of sand stone, limestone, shales, and loosely consolidated beds of gravel and sand (iq). The oldest of these sedimentary deposits and the one lying directly on the granite is the Deadwood formation of the Cambrian system. Because of the soft shales in this formation, it has often weathered in long slopes and rounded knobs Bald Mountain is an example (fl). Many of the treeless and brushfree openings or parks on the Medicine Wheel and Tongue Districts (fig. 2) occur on this formation. Sedimentary formations are particularly common on the Tongue, Medicine Wheel, and Paintrock Districts. The other three districts (fig. 1) are characterized for the most part by exposed red and gray granites and soil derived from this parent material. On the Buffalo District, in particular, are found extensive brushfree parks on preglacial deposits of granitic debris (é).
