Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS small volume contains some of the letters I have received during the last thirty years or more from well-known big-game hunters and field-naturalists, many of whom have now passed away. They were so interesting to me that I thought they might interest others who have shot in wilder Africa. Moreover, they describe conditions which are no longer possible considering the way many parts of that continent have been opened up since the Great War. Whether the spread of a so-called civilization is a good thing I do not wish to discuss, but I know there are many men, including myself, who would prefer the older times when things were less complicated and conventional. Many people are now going in for photography more than shooting, and in a way this is a good thing as it will naturally help to conserve the game. It is, however, a much less risky amusement to take animals’ pictures—I mean dangerous animals—than to try to kill them, for game such as lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros are seldom dangerous until they are wounded and followed up in thick cover. Some people may doubt this statement, but it is nevertheless true, as all experienced hunters can vouch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederick Courteney Selous (1851-1917) was a British explorer, hunter and conservationist, and is most remembered for his activities in Southeast Africa. Selous explored lesser-known areas, where he recorded ethnographic notes and collected specimens. ‘Big Game Shooting’, published in 1894, is an anecdotal account that chronicles his experiences of hunting the lion in South Africa, and offers a personal insight into late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century game hunting practices. It would suit anyone with an interest in the culture of hunting from that period, from the historian to the enthusiast. This vintage text is being republished in a high quality, modern and affordable edition, complete with the original artwork and a specially written concise biography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critically acclaimed as a master of adventure writing for Death in the Long Grass and Death in the Silent Places, former professional hunter Peter Hathaway Capstick takes us back to Africa to encounter the world’s most dangerous big-game animals. After consulting African game experts and recalling his own experiences and those of his colleagues, Capstick has written chilling, authoritative accounts of hunting the five most dangerous killers on the African continent—lion, leopard, elephant, Cape buffalo and rhinoceros. The classic big-game animals are unmatched as a test of a hunter’s skill and courage. With a command of exciting prose, Capstick brings us along on the chase. The warning snarl of a crouching lion, the swish of grass that reveals a leopard, the enraged scream of a wounded elephant, the cloud of dust that marks a herd of Cape buffalo, the earthshaking charge of a rhino are recreated in heart-stopping, nerve-racking detail. In Death in the Dark Continent, Capstick brings to life all the suspense, fear and exhilaration of stalking ferocious killers under primitive, savage conditions, with the ever present threat of death.

Book Death in the Long Grass

Download or read book Death in the Long Grass written by Peter Hathaway Capstick and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 1978-01-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As thrilling as any novel, as taut and exciting as any adventure story, Peter Hathaway Capstick’s Death in the Long Grass takes us deep into the heart of darkness to view Africa through the eyes of one of the most renowned professional hunters. Few men can say they have known Africa as Capstick has known it—leading safaris through lion country; tracking man-eating leopards along tangled jungle paths; running for cover as fear-maddened elephants stampede in all directions. And of the few who have known this dangerous way of life, fewer still can recount their adventures with the flair of this former professional hunter-turned-writer. Based on Capstick’s own experiences and the personal accounts of his colleagues, Death in the Long Grassportrays the great killers of the African bush—not only the lion, leopard, and elephant, but the primitive rhino and the crocodile waiting for its unsuspecting prey, the titanic hippo and the Cape buffalo charging like an express train out of control. Capstick was a born raconteur whose colorful descriptions and eye for exciting, authentic detail bring us face to face with some of the most ferocious killers in the world—underrated killers like the surprisingly brave and cunning hyena, silent killers such as the lightning-fast black mamba snake, collective killers like the wild dog. Readers can lean back in a chair, sip a tall, iced drink, and revel in the kinds of hunting stories Hemingway and Ruark used to hear in hotel bars from Nairobi to Johannesburg, as veteran hunters would tell of what they heard beyond the campfire and saw through the sights of an express rifle.

Book Green Hills of Africa

Download or read book Green Hills of Africa written by Ernest Hemingway and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are some things which cannot be learned quickly, and time, which is all we have, must be paid heavily for their acquiring. They are the very simplest things, and because it takes a man's life to know them the little new that each man gets from life is very costly and the only heritage he has to leave. In the winter of 1933, Ernest Hemingway and his wife Pauline set out on a two-month safari in the big-game country of East Africa, camping out on the great Serengeti Plain at the foot of magnificent Mount Kilimanjaro. “I had quite a trip,” the author told his friend Philip Percival, with characteristic understatement. Green Hills of Africa is Hemingway's account of that expedition, of what it taught him about Africa and himself. Richly evocative of the region's natural beauty, tremendously alive to its character, culture, and customs, and pregnant with a hard-won wisdom gained from the extraordinary situations it describes, it is widely held to be one of the twentieth century's classic travelogues.

Book Augusts in Africa

Download or read book Augusts in Africa written by Thomas McIntyre and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “They burn the grass in July to get it short again, and the decent hunting starts in August.” —Robert Ruark Americans from Roosevelt to Hemingway to Ruark to Capstick to Robert Jones defined Africa in ways that no European colonist ever would or could. In Augusts in Africa, Thomas McIntyre presents the stories he has gathered from four decades of safari-ing in Africa—and from among the most transforming days, weeks, and months of his life. For those who know it well, these tales may read like accurate reflections of their own experiences on the continent. For others who have journeyed to Africa only briefly, or even not at all, there is a transporting insight to be found in them. And if there is more than one account on the hunting of the Cape buffalo, that is only because it, the buffalo, may simply represent the ideal combination (the “perfect game”) of size, strength, intelligence, and vehemence to be found in any large wild animal and is therefore indicative of what draws us back again and again to Africa. Whether crouched in a blind for hours until he can clearly make out the individual rosettes on a leopard’s hide or listening to the professional hunter utter “Oh oh, you should run” when faced with a charging elephant cow, Tom McIntyre brings to life amazing African animals and exciting expeditions in Augusts in Africa.
