Book The Chinese Economy second edition

Download or read book The Chinese Economy second edition written by Barry J. Naughton and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new edition of a comprehensive overview of the modern Chinese economy, revised to reflect the end of the “miracle growth” period. This comprehensive overview of the modern Chinese economy by a noted expert on China's economic development offers a quality and breadth of coverage not found in any other English-language text. In The Chinese Economy, Barry Naughton provides both a broadly focused introduction to China's economy since 1949 and original insights based on his own extensive research. This second edition has been thoroughly revised to reflect a decade of developments in China's economy, notably the end of the period of “miracle growth” and the multiple transitions it now confronts—demographic, technological, macroeconomic, and institutional. Coverage of macroeconomic and financial policy has been significantly expanded. After covering endowments, legacies, economic systems, and general issues of economic structure, labor, and living standards, the book examines specific economic sectors, including agriculture, industry, technology, and foreign trade and investment. It then treats financial, macroeconomic, and environmental issues. The book covers such topics as patterns of growth and development, including population growth and the one-child family policy; the rural and urban economies, including rural industrialization and urban technological development; incoming and outgoing foreign investment; and environmental quality and the sustainability of growth. The book will be an essential resource for students, teachers, scholars, business practitioners, and policymakers. It is suitable for classroom use for undergraduate or graduate courses.

Book Marriage Gender and Sex in a Contemporary Chinese Village

Download or read book Marriage Gender and Sex in a Contemporary Chinese Village written by Xinbang Ruan and published by M.E. Sharpe. This book was released on 2004 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores changing concepts of marriage and gender relationships and attitudes toward sex in a rural Chinese community over the past five decades. The book is based on a study of an industrialized peasant village in Guangdong Province from 1994 to 1996 and subsequent visits from 2000 to 2002. According to the authors, the rural economic reforms of the 1980s in southern China have challenged and reinforced the deep structure of Chinese familism and this has lead to tensions between tradition and modernity. The first section of the book explores how attitudes toward marriage and courtship have changed over the past fifty years through personal accounts of three different marriages from different generations. In Part II, the transition from a traditional to a modern society is discussed from the perspective of several women from different generations. The third section focuses on sexual relationships and the growing sex trade in the village. Part IV includes updates to the original survey and takes a look at village politics.

Download or read book A Look at China and Sino Belarus Cooperation written by Kiryl Rudy and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is simultaneously a scientific study, a practical guide and diplomatic memoir about the new era in China’s development, which began in 2013 with Xi Jinping coming to power. It explores the modern Chinese experience of the political centralization of power, the fight against corruption, strengthening the country’s defense system, reinforcing the country’s diplomacy, the political rapprochement between China and Russia, and exacerbation of relations with the United States. It also considers issues of China’s adjusting its policy of reforms and its openness to a new era, transforming inefficient state-owned enterprises, building an IT-focused country, and overcoming phobias in the construction of the “Belt and Road” initiative related to the “debt trap” and the “trade deficit”, as well as the role of the Huawei Corporation. A separate section of the book is devoted to Belarus-China relations, exploring the reasons for the political rapprochement between these two very different countries.

Book Merchant Networks in the Early Modern World 1450 1800

Download or read book Merchant Networks in the Early Modern World 1450 1800 written by Sanjay Subrahmanyam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Merchant organisation was a global phenomenon in the early modern era, and in the growing contacts between peoples and cultures, merchants may be seen as privileged intermediaries. This collection is unique in essaying a truly global coverage of mercantile activities, from the Wangara of the Central Sudan, Mississippi and Huron Indians, to the role of the Jews, the Muslim merchants of Anatolia, to the social structure of the mercantile classes in early modern England. The histories of merchant communities are not their histories alone, but also the histories of assumptions concerning their contexts. From the comparative perspective adopted here, it emerges that in markets where Western European merchants vied for place with competitors from the Near East, South Asia or East Asia, they were very often unsuccessful.

Book The Chinese Dream and Ordinary Chinese People

Download or read book The Chinese Dream and Ordinary Chinese People written by Mai Lu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-02-27 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of interviews explores how the Chinese Dream is fueling the aspirations of individuals in China today and presents 40 representative cases that showcase the journeys that ordinary people undertake in pursuit of their dreams as well as their extraordinary achievements. The authors identify autonomy, self-awareness, and hard work as the most fundamental driving forces in individuals taking control of their own lives and achieving their dreams, with family and social support as further important factors. Despite the vast differences in the interviewees’ dreams and experiences in pursuing them, there is a common thread in their stories, namely the impact of major changes in the country on their lives. The future of individuals is closely linked to the future of the country: a bright future for the country means a good life for all. People’s longing for a better life is the basis and a central element of the Chinese Dream, which is the dream of the nation and the dream of every citizen. This book will appeal to a wide audience, including ordinary people.

This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long history of migration, trade, and shared interests links China to Latin America and the Caribbean. Over the past twenty years, China has increased direct investment and restructured trade relations in the region. In addition, Chinese public sector enterprises, private companies, and various branches of the central government have planned, developed, and built a large number of infrastructure projects in Latin America and the Caribbean, such as dams, roads, railways, energy grids, security systems, telecommunication networks, hospitals, and schools. These projects have had a profound impact on local environments and economies and help shape the lived experiences of individuals. Each chapter in this volume examines how the impact of these infrastructure projects varies in different countries, focusing on how they produce new forms of global connectivity between various sectors of the economy and the resulting economic and cultural links that permeate everyday life.
