Download or read book Go Big or Go Home written by Kat Von D and published by Harper Design. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With passion and unflinching honesty, renowned tattoo artist and New York Times bestselling author Kat Von D chronicles her journey to develop greater personal strength by taking bigger risks in life, love, and her art in this stunning illustrated book. In Go Big or Go Home, her most intensely personal work yet, Kat Von D raises the expository and tattoo bar as she writes candidly about her greatest desires, fears, successes, and failures, and shares how she has dealt with them–for better or worse. In seven thematic essays, she addresses issues close to her heart–individuality, strength, creativity, independence, presence, wisdom, and altruism–and draws on engaging and inspiring stories from her own life and those of her clients throughout each section. Aligned with this focus on risk taking, making bold moves, and taking responsibility for her actions is Kat's decision to create only large-scale tattoos especially for this book. Each tattoo represents a two-fold commitment: one from Kat as an artist, and the other from the client, for whom the tattoo almost always represents a significant event or a visible manifestation of his or her evolving inner self. Filled with Kat's sketches, handwriting, and specially commissioned photographs of tattoos–both in process and complete–Go Big or Go Home features a range of astounding work on both regular citizens and the many celebrities who seek her out, including songwriter Linda Perry, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, actor Ewan McGregor, rapper Game, and comedian Bobcat Goldthwait. Above all, this special book captures the candor, compassion, and enormous talent of an artist beloved by millions worldwide.

Book I See You Big German

Download or read book I See You Big German written by Zac Crain and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1990's, Dallas was a basketball wasteland. Luckily for the city, along came Dirk Nowitzki, a towering Würzburg, Germany native with a cool efficiency and the ability to basket shots from seemingly impossible angles. Nowitzki spent his entire 21-season NBA career with the Dallas Mavericks, the longest tenure of any one player with one team in the league's history, and led them to their first and only NBA championship, while being named a 14-time All-Star, a 12-time All-NBA Team member, and the first European player to receive the NBA's Most Valuable Player Award. Zac Crain, award-winning journalist for D Magazine who moved to Dallas the same year that Nowitzki began his career in the city, memorializes Nowitzki’s career through a lyric essay reminiscent of Hanif Abdurraqib's Go Ahead in the Rain that mixes with author's story with the basketball legend's, charting the highs and lows (and mostly highs) of the Mavs' all-time statistical leader’s career and what they mean to the city of Dallas and its now basketball-obsessed citizens.

"The Frank"is in the clutches of a crime syndicate run by seventh-grader Vinny "Mr. Biggs" Biggio, who deals in forged hall passes and blackmarket candy. Double-cross him and your number is punched by one of his deadly water gun-toting assassins. One hit in the pants and you are in "the Outs" forever. Matt Stevens is a proud loner with his own code of justice. He's avoided being pulled into Vinny's organization until now: Mr. Biggs has offered him a job he can't resist, even if it means bringing down one of his oldest friends. Nominated for an Edgar Award in 2009, The Big Splash revitalizes the noir novel while delivering a terrific, addictive mystery that crackles with wit and excitement. Awards and praise for The Big Splash 2009 Edgar Award nomination "Jack Ferraiolo shines a light on middle school and reveals what we've always suspected: It's a sinister place ruled by crime bosses and thugs. The Big Splash will make you laugh out loud." --Jeff Kinney, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Diary of a Wimpy Kid "Entertaining and thrilling." --New York Times Book Review "An ingenious premise: junior high noir. . . . Twists and curve balls keep readers guessing; extended jokes will keep them laughing." --Publishers Weekly, starred review "Well paced, funny, and suspenseful, with some real commentary on bullying and mob mentality." --School Library Journal "If middle school has an 'underworld,' this book is The Godfather and The Maltese Falcon all rolled into one. Better still, it's funny, and not just a little." --Gordon Korman, author of Born to Rock

Book Big Is Beautiful

Download or read book Big Is Beautiful written by Robert D. Atkinson and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-03-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why small business is not the basis of American prosperity, not the foundation of American democracy, and not the champion of job creation. In this provocative book, Robert Atkinson and Michael Lind argue that small business is not, as is widely claimed, the basis of American prosperity. Small business is not responsible for most of the country's job creation and innovation. American democracy does not depend on the existence of brave bands of self-employed citizens. Small businesses are not systematically discriminated against by government policy makers. Rather, Atkinson and Lind argue, small businesses are not the font of jobs, because most small businesses fail. The only kind of small firm that contributes to technological innovation is the technological start-up, and its success depends on scaling up. The idea that self-employed citizens are the foundation of democracy is a relic of Jeffersonian dreams of an agrarian society. And governments, motivated by a confused mix of populist and free market ideology, in fact go out of their way to promote small business. Every modern president has sung the praises of small business, and every modern president, according to Atkinson and Lind, has been wrong. Pointing to the advantages of scale for job creation, productivity, innovation, and virtually all other economic benefits, Atkinson and Lind argue for a “size neutral” policy approach both in the United States and around the world that would encourage growth rather than enshrine an anachronism. If we overthrow the “small is beautiful” ideology, we will be able to recognize large firms as the engines of progress and prosperity that they are.
