Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bienville Parish, founded in 1848, is located in central north Louisiana. While perhaps most well-known for its ties to outlaws Bonnie and Clyde, Bienville Parish has a rich timber and railroad history that has shaped the community for over a century. Settlers moved into the region to take advantage of its flourishing industry, but it was community that led people to put down roots in the area. Religion and education formed the basis of everyday life in the rural region. In this photographic history, Bienville Parish is depicted through the lives of the people who inhabited the area. Although its size has decreased in recent years, the people who still reside in the parish have made it a priority to preserve the memories for future generations.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bienville Parish, Louisiana: Its Geographical Position, Topographical Features, Population, Educational Advantages, Commerce, and Transportation; Its Soil and Productions, Game and Fishes, Ores and Minerals; And a Compilation of the Homestead and Exemption Laws of Louisiana, and The Bienville is bounded by the Parishes of Webster, Claiborne and Lincoln on the North, Lincoln and Jackson on the East, Winn, Natchitoches and Red River on the South, and Webster, with Lake Bisteneau, on the West, and embraces a territory of 856 square miles, to which area it was reduced by the formation, in part from Bienville, of the contiguous Parishes of Red River and Webster in 1871, and Lincoln in 1873. Though classed as one of the "Good Upland" Parishes, the surface of Bienville is varied. A topographical view will exhibit high hills, elevated plateaus, gentle undulations and dismal swamps. Running through the Parish, from north to south, are the large bayous Black Lake and Saline, the low lands adjacent to which are subject to annual submersion. Tributary to these are numerous smaller streams, of which many are likewise subject to overflow during the seasons of copious rains. The area of swamp and overflowed land, however, constitutes but a small part of the surface of Bienville, and such are its topographical features as to warrant the conclusion that in the future these lands may prove to be an advantageous source from which may be obtained the finest and most durable timber for domestic use, and to supply, at remunerative prices, the increasing demands of the markets abroad. Book excerpt: Residents of antebellum northwest Louisiana held strong pro-Union sentiments, and the Pierson family of Bienville Parish, Louisiana, were no exception, opposing secession in 1861. Yet once war began, the region contributed its full share of support to the southern army, and four of William H. Pierson's eight sons enlisted. Ranging from the early battles of the Trans-Mississippi to the epic battles of the Army of Northern Virginia, and from the brutal trenches of Vicksburg to provost guard duty in north Louisiana, this extensive collection of Civil War letters, written by three of the Pierson brothers, offers riveting glimpses of almost every variety of experience faced by Confederate soldiers. Prolific letter writers, the Piersons were educated, observant, and well placed to comment not only on the battles and campaigns of their regiments but also on their commanding officers, the effect of political activity on soldier morale, being taken captive, and, most of all, their entire family's understanding of and commitment to the Confederate cause.

Book Descendants of William Cromartie and Ruhamah Doane

Download or read book Descendants of William Cromartie and Ruhamah Doane written by Amanda Cook Gilbert and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 797 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious work chronicles 250 years of the Cromartie family genealogical history. Included in the index of nearly fifty thousand names are the current generations, and all of those preceding, which trace ancestry to our family patriarch, William Cromartie, who was born in 1731 in Orkney, Scotland, and his second wife, Ruhamah Doane, who was born in 1745. Arriving in America in 1758, William Cromartie settled and developed a plantation on South River, a tributary of the Cape Fear near Wilmington, North Carolina. On April 2, 1766, William married Ruhamah Doane, a fifth-generation descendant of a Mayflower passenger to Plymouth, Stephen Hopkins. If Cromartie is your last name or that of one of your blood relatives, it is almost certain that you can trace your ancestry to one of the thirteen children of William Cromartie, his first wife, and Ruhamah Doane, who became the founding ancestors of our Cromartie family in America: William, Jr, James, Thankful, Elizabeth, Hannah Ruhamah, Alexander, John, Margaret Nancy, Mary, Catherine, Jean, Peter Patrick, and Ann E. Cromartie. These four volumes hold an account of the descent of each of these first-generation Cromarties in America, including personal anecdotes, photographs, copies of family bibles, wills, and other historical documents. Their pages hold a personal record of our ancestors and where you belong in the Cromartie family tree.
