Book Modeling Marine Systems

Download or read book Modeling Marine Systems written by A. M. Davies and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume reference presents a series of review and research articles on advances in computing, marine physics, and remote sensing and addresses their importance to shallow sea modeling. Intended as a tribute to Dr. Norman Heaps, topics in the book reflect the range and diversity of his work, as well as his influence on international marine science. Topics discussed include numerical techniques, flow in homogenous sea regions, stratified flows, lake regimes, validation of numerical models, remote sensing as a method to collect oceanographic data at the sea surface, and bottom boundary modeling. Marine scientists actively involved in mathematical modeling and scientists who are interested in using models as tools to gain more insight and understanding of the processes they are observing will find this text useful.

Book Physical Oceanography of Coastal and Shelf Seas

Download or read book Physical Oceanography of Coastal and Shelf Seas written by B. Johns and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1983-01-01 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough treatment of both theoretical and observational aspects of the interaction between the sea-floor and the near-sea-floor dynamics; the effect this has on the distribution of internal and seabed stress; and the relevance of the associated dynamics to sedimentation processes. The theoretical work described involved both analytical and numerical modelling studies of a wide range of near-shore and shelf processes. These provide a valuable store of information on the interaction between the sea-floor and the dynamics of the overlying water. The book also includes an account of tidal analysis techniques and how these are being applied in the analysis of tidal current measurements. The observational studies relate to measurements of near-sea-floor turbulence and sand-transport in the littoral zone.

Book British University Observatories 1772 1939

Download or read book British University Observatories 1772 1939 written by Roger Hutchins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British University Observatories fills a gap in the historiography of British astronomy by offering the histories of observatories identified as a group by their shared characteristics. The first full histories of the Oxford and Cambridge observatories are here central to an explanatory history of each of the six that undertook research before World War II - Oxford, Dunsink, Cambridge, Durham, Glasgow and London. Each struggled to evolve in the middle ground between the royal observatories and those of the 'Grand Amateurs' in the nineteenth century. Fundamental issues are how and why astronomy came into the universities, how research was reconciled with teaching, lack of endowment, and response to the challenge of astrophysics. One organizing theme is the central importance of the individual professor-directors in determining the fortunes of these observatories, the community of assistants, and their role in institutional politics sometimes of the murkiest kind, patronage networks and discipline shaping coteries. The use of many primary sources illustrates personal motivations and experience. This book will intrigue anyone interested in the history of astronomy, of telescopes, of scientific institutions, and of the history of universities. The history of each individual observatory can easily be followed from foundation to 1939, or compared to experience elsewhere across the period. Astronomy is competitive and international, and the British experience is contextualised by comparison for the first time to those in Germany, France, Italy and the USA.

Book Land Ocean Interaction

    Book Details:
  • Author : D. Huntley
  • Publisher : IWA Publishing
  • Release : 2000-12-01
  • ISBN : 1900222108
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book Land Ocean Interaction written by D. Huntley and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2000-12-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UK Land-Ocean Interaction Study (LOIS) provided a major opportunity to measure and model the processes controlling the fluxes of materials between river basins and coastal seas. The main programme of research took place between 1992 and 1998, funded by the UK Natural Environment Research Council, and involved approximately 360 coastal researchers contributing to more than 70 collaborative projects. This book presents accessible summaries of key results of this research. The ten chapters of the book are written by leading contributors to the programme, and cover aspects of the physical, sedimentological, chemical and biological processes controlling fluxes between river catchments and coastal seas in temporate environments. Major overarching themes for all of the chapters include the persistence, storage, degradation and transport of pollutants from catchment to coastal sea, and an emphasis on the relevance of research for river and coastal water quality management. The chapters also describe a number of important technological advances in the measurement of processes and longer term monitoring of the fluvial, estuarine and coastal environments. Approaches to monitoring were also transferred between disciplines, in many cases for the first time. The rivers and coastal programme of LOIS was unique in its scale and inter-disciplinarity and its results are of lasting value. This book provides a useful and important summary of many of its results and an effective introduction to the research for those who want to delve more deeply into the data and published papers. It will be of interest to scientists, environmental managers and scientific policy makers. Book Residual Currents and Long term Transport

Download or read book Residual Currents and Long term Transport written by Ralph T. Cheng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estuaries, bays and contiguous coastal seas are the world's most valuable, and yet most vulnerable marine ecosystems. Fundamental to the protection and management of these important resources is an understand- ing of the physical processes involved which affect the circulation, mixing, and transport of salt, nutrients and sediment. Residual Currents and Long-Term Transport processes appear to have direct control over freshwater inflows, contaminant loadings, dispersion and transport of sediments and nutrients, and causes of declining living resources. This volume provides a comprehensive and up-to-date summary of the research results on these processes in estuaries and bays. Contributions from ten countries include results based on theoretical formulations, analyses of field data, numerical models and case studies.
