Book Management of Natural Resources Sustainable Development and Ecological Hazards III

Download or read book Management of Natural Resources Sustainable Development and Ecological Hazards III written by C. A. Brebbia and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the third in a now-biennial series organized by the Wessex Institute of Technology around the urgent need to determine solutions regarding sustainable development before our planet reaches a point of irreversibility. The aggressive search for new sources of energy and materials, the rapid rate at which natural resources are being consumed, and the destructiveness of the resulting pollution are all having a negative impact on the planet that needs to be stopped, if not reversed. As at the first two, participants at this conference will take stock of our situation and try to facilitate constructive principles and policies for a way forward, something that can only be done by transdisciplinary cooperation. Thus papers will examine ethical, political and social issues, health, safety and risk, lessons from nature, planning and development, and new technologies.

Book The Policy and Parctice of Bicycle Facility Retrofits in Texas

Download or read book The Policy and Parctice of Bicycle Facility Retrofits in Texas written by Ian Edward Hallett and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many local and regional transportation authorities in Texas are proposing retrofitted bicycle facilities -- those added to existing roadways without changing the curb-to-curb width -- under the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Program and the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP). As custodian of the federal money for these programs, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) must approve or reject these proposals according TxDOT design standards, which are based on the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (1999) Guide to the Development of Bicycle Facilities. This research was undertaken to provide additional tools to evaluate the suitability of an on-street bicycle facility for both motorists and cyclists, especially as the tools apply to the approval or rejection of bicycle facility retrofits. The additional tools for evaluation of this study developed primarily from approximately 3,500 observations of motorists passing cyclists and over 4,000 observations of motorists unaffected by cyclists at 24 sites across Texas. These observations led to multivariate regression models of the lateral position of motorists and cyclists based on geometric and traffic characteristics such as motor vehicle lane width, percentage of truck traffic, presence and width of bicycle lane, and presence of a center turn lane. The results of this research and that of another bicycle facility evaluation tool, the Bicycle Compatibility Index developed by the Highway Safety Research Center at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, were used to create the Texas Guide for Retrofit and Planned Bicycle Facilities.

Book Long range Cost Estimation Research Project

Download or read book Long range Cost Estimation Research Project written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to research long-range (parametric) cost estimation at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), utilizing AASHTO's Trns.port Cost Estimation and Decision Support software. Info Tech, Inc., analysis reviewed CDOT's current long-range estimation practices and identified revisions which would be needed to satisfactorily meet CDOT's future cost estimating requirements, i.e., in order to develop consistent and reliable cost estimates when little is known about a project. Both item and contract classifications utilized by CDOT in BAMS/DSS were revised to reflect more logical functional groupings. The new contract work type and item classification were used directly to develop an Interim Solution for Long-Range Cost Estimation that uses historical bid-based default prices. Info Tech analysts also researched Internet sources to identify the availability of major item cost data at the regional and national level, including data for multimodal project types.
