Book Handbook of Religion and the Asian City

Download or read book Handbook of Religion and the Asian City written by Peter van der Veer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handbook of Religion and the Asian City highlights the creative and innovative role of urban aspirations in Asian world cities. It does not assume that religion is of the past and that the urban is secular, but instead points out that urban politics and governance often manifest religious boundaries and sensibilities—in short, that public religion is politics. The essays in this book show how projects of secularism come up against projects and ambitions of a religious nature, a particular form of contestation that takes the city as its public arena. Questioning the limits of cities like Mumbai, Singapore, Seoul, Beijing, Bangkok, and Shanghai, the authors assert that Asian cities have to be understood not as global models of futuristic city planning but as larger landscapes of spatial imagination that have specific cultural and political trajectories. Religion plays a central role in the politics of heritage that is emerging from the debris of modernist city planning. Megacities are arenas for the assertion of national and transnational aspirations as Asia confronts modernity. Cities are also sites of speculation, not only for those who invest in real estate but also for those who look for housing, employment, and salvation. In its potential and actual mobility, the sacred creates social space in which they all can meet. Handbook of Religion and the Asian City makes the comparative case that one cannot study the historical patterns of urbanization in Asia without paying attention to the role of religion in urban aspirations.

Book excerpt: Urban Nation: Australia's Planning Heritage provides the first national survey of the historical impact of urban planning and design on the Australian landscape. This ambitious account looks at every state and territory from the earliest days of European settlement to the present day. It identifies and documents hundreds of places - parks, public spaces, redeveloped precincts, neighbourhoods, suburbs up to whole towns - that contribute to the distinctive character of urban and suburban Australia. It sets these significant planned landscapes within the broader context of both international design trends and Australian efforts at nation and city building.

This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The task of design is to integrate functional requirements, contextual conditions and technological means into the creation of a work of architectural culture. After twenty years of practice, a team involving Ignacio Dahl Rocha, Kenneth Ross, Christian Leibbrand, Manuela Toscan and others of the Lausanne-based Swiss office of Richter ∙ Dahl Rocha & Associés has undertaken to formulate the knowledge behind their architectural practice in a comprehensive manual. Covering the full span from initial design, building typology, technology to the cooperation with other professions in four extensive sections, this book conveys the concepts, methods and details that constitute the tools of state-of-the-art architectural projects. The material used is completely first-hand, with the technical drawings redrawn to this purpose, coming from projects like the much-acclaimed integral renovation of Nestlé Headquarters, from residential, office and healthcare buildings to the groundbreaking Swiss Tech Convention Center on the Lausanne Polytechnic Campus. Written with the editorial collaboration of Denise Bratton, this book sets new standards for architectural publications as tools for design.

  • Pages : 96 pages

Book excerpt: Glen Cove, the only city located on Long Island's Gold Coast, has long been reinventing itself. After World War II, the farms and estates in the area gave way to suburban development. Modern advancements like the zoom lens, the dimmer switch, and X-ray technologies were all developed within the city limits, while factories on the creek supplied the world with carbon paper, typewriter ribbons, and graphic arts film and cameras. Albert Einstein, Nikita Khrushchev, and the Kennedy families stayed in the community, and stars of stage and screen performed about town. In 1968, Glen Cove celebrated its tricentennial. It was followed by urban renewal and the rebuilding of the old downtown. In the final years of the 20th century, the industrial era ended, and under the auspices of Mayor Thomas Suozzi, environmental cleanup and waterfront revitalization began.
