Book Spain and the Protestant Reformation

Download or read book Spain and the Protestant Reformation written by Wayne H. Bowen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Charles V and Philip II, both of whom expected to continue the momentum of the Reconquista into a campaign against Islam, the theology and political successes of Martin Luther and John Calvin menaced not just the possibility of a universal empire, but the survival of the Habsburg monarchy. Moreover, the Protestant Reformation stimulated changes within Spain and other Habsburg domains, reinvigorating the Spanish Inquisition against new enemies, reinforcing Catholic orthodoxy, and restricting the reach of the Renaissance and Scientific Revolution. This book argues that the Protestant Reformation was an existential threat to the Catholic Habsburg monarchy of the sixteenth century and the greatest danger to its political and religious authority in Europe and the world. Spain’s war on the Reformation was a war for the future of Europe, in which the Spanish Inquisition was the most effective weapon. This war, led by Charles V and Philip II was in the end a triumphant failure: Spain remained Catholic, but its enemies embraced Protestantism in an enduring way, even as Spain’s vision for a global monarchy faced military, political, and economic defeats in Europe and the broader world. Spain and the Protestant Reformation will appeal to researchers and students alike interested in the history and society of Early Modern Spain.

Book Bibliotheca Wiffeniana Vol 2

Download or read book Bibliotheca Wiffeniana Vol 2 written by Edward Boehmer and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-05 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliotheca Wiffeniana, Vol. 2: Spanish Reformers of Two Centuries From 1520, Their Lives and Writings, According to the Late Benjamin B. Wiffen's Plan and With the Use of His Materials With relation to the emendations and additions for volume 1 and '2, the introduction of which I partly contemplate in the third and last volume and partly elsewhere, I solicit that printed and manuscript communications may be by scholars kindly furnished me. My Bible catalogue is defective, but, this notwithstanding, the catalogue with the Specimens may prove useful to Bible-societies in their future undertakings. I do not know of even one of these societies as having in its library a complete series of its own publications. My own collection of Spanish Bibles, without which I should have been unable to find out the genealogy of the different editions and revisions of Reina's Bible, will be increased and finally incorporated into some public library. (b - r after the title of a book means that a copy is in my collection). In order to prevent loss of time and to ensure the delivery of letters and parcels addressed to me, I beg to notify, that I return to Lichtenthal near Baden Baden next April, where I shall permanently reside. Book Aspects of Violence in Renaissance Europe

Download or read book Aspects of Violence in Renaissance Europe written by Jonathan Davies and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the history of violence has increased dramatically over the last ten years and recent studies have demonstrated the productive potential for further inquiry in this field. The early modern period is particularly ripe for further investigation because of the pervasiveness of violence. Certain countries may have witnessed a drop in the number of recorded homicides during this period, yet homicide is not the only marker of a violent society. This volume presents a range of contributions that look at various aspects of violence from the fourteenth to the seventeenth centuries, from student violence and misbehaviour in fifteenth-century Oxford and Paris to the depiction of war wounds in the English civil wars. The book is divided into three sections, each clustering chapters around the topics of interpersonal and ritual violence, war, and justice and the law. Informed by the disciplines of anthropology, criminology, the history of art, literary studies, and sociology, as well as history, the contributors examine all forms of violence including manslaughter, assault, rape, riots, war and justice. Previous studies have tended to emphasise long-term trends in violent behaviour but one must always be attentive to the specificity of violence and these essays reveal what it meant in particular places and at particular times.
