Book excerpt: The present work is a comprehensive catalog of publications that were produced and printed by the Divine Word Missionaries (Societas Verbi Divini, S.V.D.) in Shandong province, China. It was compiled by the late Prof. Dr. Roman Malek, S.V.D. (1951–2019), an internationally renowned expert for the history of Christianity in China and former director and editor-in-chief of the Monumenta Serica Institute (MSI) in Sankt Augustin, Germany. The catalog comprises nearly 400 entries, arranged in alphabetical order according to the original titles, in Chinese, German or Latin, and occasionally in English. Each entry provides detailed bibliographical information, excerpts from the book information included in the contemporary editions of the Catalogus Librorum of the S.V.D. Mission Press, a short explanation in English on the respective title and a Table of Contents. The S.V.D. publications cover a broad range of fields, including apologetic and catechetical material, e.g., reprints of works of the old China mission, books for teaching the faith and prayer books; biblical materials, i.e., translations from and works on the Bible; educational material, such as textbooks for the schools run by the S.V.D. in Shandong; dictionaries and grammars for Chinese, German and Latin; Catholic periodicals; books on Chinese culture; hymn books; and finally, materials for evangelization (posters, pictures, etc.). The Bibliotheca Sinica Christiana makes an important contribution to documenting the printing activities of a specific Catholic missionary society, the S.V.D., in China in the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century. It aims at stimulating further research into the S.V.D. China mission and into the history of religious printing in the modern era in China at large.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of features characterize late Ming vernacular fiction as part of the general cultural expansion of that period. These features centrally include the exposition of sexual transgression and the function of containment, by which is meant the ideology of the control of desires. The late Ming writers are studiously devoted to illustrating minute, obscene, or erotic details that belief the decorum of the orthodox surface. However, this subversiveness of detail decreases in intensity from the late Ming to the early Qing, when values of containment are reinvoked. Related topics are: the theme of causality and its role in the story's mapping of the logic of adultery; adultery as an emblem of the woman's escape from containment and the use of the narrative topos of the gap in the wall as a locus of sexual transgression.

Wang draws on a vast range of previously underutilized archival sources to show how copyright was received, appropriated, and practiced in China, within and beyond the legal institutions of the state. Contrary to common belief, copyright was not a problematic doctrine simply imposed on China by foreign powers with little regard for Chinese cultural and social traditions. From a European perspective, this book is about the way Christianity expanded in the early modern period, craving universalism. In China, Matteo Ricci was so impressed by the influence that the scholar-officials were able to exert on the Ming Emperor himself that he likened them to the philosopher-kings of Plato’s Republic. The Jesuits in China were in the hands of the scholar-officials, with the Emperor at the apex, who had the power to decide whether they could stay or not. Meanwhile, in Peru, the Society of Jesus was required to impose Tridentine Catholicism by Philip II, independently of Rome, a task that entailed compliance with the colonial authorities’ demands. This book explores how leading Jesuits, Matteo Ricci (1552-1610) in China and José de Acosta (1540-1600) in Peru, envisioned mission projects and reflected them on the catechisms they both composed, with a remarkable power of endurance. It offers a reflection on how the Jesuits conceived and assessed these mission spaces, in which their keen political acumen and a certain taste for power unfolded, playing key roles in envisioning new doctrinal directions and reflecting them in their doctrinal texts.

This study focuses on the mission work of the Italian Jesuit Giulio Aleni (Ai Rulüe 艾儒略, 1582–1649) in Fujian and the unique text Kouduo richao 口鐸日抄 (Diary of Oral Admonitions, 1630–1640) that records the religious and intellectual conversations among the Jesuits and local converts. By examining the mechanisms of dialogue in Kouduo richao and other Christian works distinguished by a certain dialogue form, the author of the present work aims to reveal the formation of a hybrid Christian–Confucian identity in late Ming Chinese religious experience. By offering the new approach of dialogic hybridization, the book not only treats dialogue as an important yet underestimated genre in late Ming Christian literature, but it also uncovers a self–other identity complex in the dialogic exchanges of the Jesuits and Chinese scholars. Giulio Aleni, Kouduo richao, and Christian–Confucian Dialogism in Late Ming Fujian is a multi-faceted investigation of the religious, philosophical, ethical, scientific, and artistic topics discussed among the Jesuits and late Ming scholars. This comprehensive research echoes what the distinguished Sinologist Erik Zürcher (1928–2008) said about the richness and diversity of Chinese Christian texts produced in the 17th and 18th centuries. Following Zürcher’s careful study and annotated full translation of Kouduo richao (Monumenta Serica Monograph Series, LVI/1-2), the present work features a set of new findings beyond the endeavours of Zürcher and other scholars.
