Book Trajan

Download or read book Trajan written by Julian Bennett and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trajan (AD 98-117) is one of the very few Roman emperors who has always been seen in a good light. Popular during his lifetime, by the fourth century he had become the litmus test of imperial excellence. In the Middle Ages he was placed by Dante in the sixth sphere of Heaven among the Just and Temperate Rulers, and for Gibbon, Trajan's principate ushered in the Golden Age of the Roman Empire. In this the first comprehensive biography in English, Julian Bennett tests the substance of the emperor's glorious reputation. No ancient biography of Trajan survives and the period as a whole is singularly ill-served by the extant literary evidence. A thorough examination of the contemporary archaeological and epigraphic evidence supplements this inadequate written record and allows Dr Bennett to cover every major aspect of Trajan's reign. Dr Bennett's central conclusion is that Trajan's reign was indeed the apogee of the principate established by Augustus and his successors. It saw the birth of the 'imperiate' - the full realization of the imperial system. Moreover, the emperor himself is seen as the pivotal character in this development. Trajan's contemporary reputation as Optimus Princeps seems to have been richly deserved.

Book Livy s Political Philosophy

Download or read book Livy s Political Philosophy written by Ann Vasaly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the political implications of the first five books of Livy's celebrated history of Rome, challenging the common perception of the author as an apolitical moralist. Ann Vasaly argues that Livy intended to convey through the narration of particular events crucial lessons about the interaction of power and personality, including the personality of the Roman people as a whole. These lessons demonstrate the means by which the Roman republic flourished in the distant past and by which it might be revived in Livy's own corrupt time. Written at the precise moment when Augustus' imperial autocracy was replacing the republican system that had existed in Rome for almost 500 years, the stories of the first pentad offer invaluable insight into how republics and monarchies work. Vasaly's innovative study furthers the integration in recent scholarship of the literary brilliance of Livy's text and the seriousness of its purpose.

Book Coins and Power in Late Iron Age Britain

Download or read book Coins and Power in Late Iron Age Britain written by John Creighton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-07-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cunobelin, Shakespeare's Cymbeline, ruled much of south-east Britain in the years before Claudius' legions arrived, creating the Roman province of Britannia. But what do we know of him and his rule, and that of competing dynasties in south-east Britain? This book examines the background to these, the first individuals in British history. It explores the way in which rulers bolstered their power through the use of imagery on coins, myths, language and material culture. After the visit of Caesar in 55 and 54 BC, the shadow of Rome played a fundamental role in this process. Combining the archaeological, literary and numismatic evidence, John Creighton paints a vivid picture of how people in late Iron Age Britain reacted to the changing world around them.

This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, edited by Natasha Constantinidou and Han Lamers, investigates modes of receiving and responding to Greeks, Greece, and Greek in early modern Europe (15th-17th centuries). The book's 17 detailed studies illuminate the reception of Greek culture (the classical, Byzantine, and even post-Byzantine traditions), the Greek language (ancient, vernacular, and 'humanist'), as well as the people claiming, or being assigned, Greek identities during this period in different geographical and cultural contexts. 0Discussing subjects as diverse as, for example, Greek studies and the Reformation, artistic interchange between Greek East and Latin West, networks of communication in the Greek diaspora, and the ramifications of Greek antiquarianism, the book aims at encouraging a more concerted debate about the role of Hellenism in early modern Europe that goes beyond disciplinary boundaries, and opening ways towards a more over-arching understanding of this multifaceted cultural phenomenon. 0.
