This book was released on 2002 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a response to a need often expressed by both students and researchers in philology, classical studies, and related fields in the humanities. Indeed, it is scarcely possible to read an article, whether in a scholarly journal or daily newspaper, without coming up against an incredible number of initialisms, abbreviations, or acronyms. This 2-volume work, in modern dictionary form, gives as exhaustive a list as possible of the abbreviations used, and appends useful information: the author's name, the place and date of publication, and other relevant details. Entries containing non-Roman characters (such as Cyrillic or Slavic) are transliterated and also given in their original languages. Journals that list their titles in several languages on their title pages are listed by each of those titles. Over 27,000 acronyms and abbreviations appear here.

Book Middle English Word Studies

Download or read book Middle English Word Studies written by Louise Sylvester and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2000 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bibliography of studies of individual Middle English words and groups of words offering evidence for word meanings. Although detailed and full bibliographies exist for Old English word studies, this is the first specifically on Middle English lexicography, focussing on studies of individual Middle English words and groups of words which offer evidence for word meanings: ante- and post-datings for the Oxford English Dictionary and the Middle English Dictionary, missing entries and ghost words, possible proverbs, proposals for etymologies, wordplay, punning, new readingsin manuscripts and the reinterpretations of textual cruces. It first presents an annotated bibliography arranged alphabetically by author's name and date of publication; the annotations include notes on the contents and approach of each article, cross-references to related work, and references to reviews. Two indexes follow, the Index of Words, an alphabetical listing of words that have attracted significant discussion with references to the author(s), publication date and notes of pages on which the words are discussed; and an Index of Authors. The introductory section offers critical analyses of the word studies. Professor JANE ROBERTS and Dr LOUISE SYLVESTER teach atKing's College London.

Download or read book The Anglo Saxon Library written by Michael Lapidge and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-01-26 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cardinal role of Anglo-Saxon libraries in the transmission of classical and patristic literature to the later middle ages has long been recognized, for these libraries sustained the researches of those English scholars whose writings determined the curriculum of medieval schools: Aldhelm, Bede, and Alcuin, to name only the best known. Yet this is the first full-length account of the nature and holdings of Anglo-Saxon libraries from the sixth century to the eleventh. The early chapters discuss libraries in antiquity, notably at Alexandria and republican and imperial Rome, and also the Christian libraries of late antiquity which supplied books to Anglo-Saxon England. Because Anglo-Saxon libraries themselves have almost completely vanished, three classes of evidence need to be combined in order to form a detailed impression of their holdings: surviving inventories, surviving manuscripts, and citations of classical and patristic works by Anglo-Saxon authors themselves. After setting out the problems entailed in using such evidence, the book provides appendices containing editions of all surviving Anglo-Saxon inventories, lists of all Anglo-Saxon manuscripts exported to continental libraries during the eighth century and then all manuscripts re-imported into England in the tenth, as well as a catalogue of all citations of classical and patristic literature by Anglo-Saxon authors. A comprehensive index, arranged alphabetically by author, combines these various classes of evidence so that the reader can see at a glance what books were known where and by whom in Anglo-Saxon England. The book thus provides, within a single volume, a vast amount of information on the books and learning of the schools which determined the course of medieval literary culture.
