Book The English Understand Wool Storybook ND Series

Download or read book The English Understand Wool Storybook ND Series written by Helen DeWitt and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2022-08-16 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A modern amorality play about a 17-year-old girl, the wilder shores of connoisseurship, and the power of false friends Maman was exigeante—there is no English word–and I had the benefit of her training. Others may not be so fortunate. If some other young girl, with two million dollars at stake, finds this of use I shall count myself justified. Raised in Marrakech by a French mother and English father, a 17-year-old girl has learned above all to avoid mauvais ton ("bad taste" loses something in the translation). One should not ask servants to wait on one during Ramadan: they must have paid leave while one spends the holy month abroad. One must play the piano; if staying at Claridge’s, one must regrettably install a Clavinova in the suite, so that the necessary hours of practice will not be inflicted on fellow guests. One should cultivate weavers of tweed in the Outer Hebrides but have the cloth made up in London; one should buy linen in Ireland but have it made up by a Thai seamstress in Paris (whose genius has been supported by purchase of suitable premises). All this and much more she has learned, governed by a parent of ferociously lofty standards. But at 17, during the annual Ramadan travels, she finds all assumptions overturned. Will she be able to fend for herself? Will the dictates of good taste suffice when she must deal, singlehanded, with the sharks of New York?

Author Hart reveals little-known but fascinating facts about US society--for example, how huge flocks of sheep were driven to the California gold fields to feed hungry miners, and why sheep grazed on the White House lawn during World War I. Moving from the realms of handcrafted artisanry to industrialization and back, Wool is a story of technological and social change, marketing forces, and above all, consumer choices. Book excerpt: Published on the occasion of Christopher Wool's 2008 exhibition at New York's Skarstedt Gallery, this concise collection of 17 black-and-white pattern paintings made between 1987 and 2000, set alongside 10 installation shots, serves as historic documentation of works that have rarely been shown or published, but which remain perennially influential. Born in Chicago in 1955, Wool came to prominence in New York in the 1980s with his graffiti-like text paintings, which are full of slang, song lyrics and action painting drips. Loved and loathed by critics, Wool has been described by the Village Voice's Jerry Saltz as, "a very pure version of something dissonant and poignant. His all-or-nothing, caustic-cerebral, ambivalent-belligerent gambit is riveting and even a little thrilling. It's what makes him one of the more optically alive painters out there."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Select List of References on Wool: With Special Reference to the Tariff This list was compiled to meet the needs of the Committee on Ways Means of the House of Representatives. It is now printed to meet the demand for copies roused by the widespread interest in the revision of Schedule K, Wool. In preparing the material for the press the references have been arranged under three main heads, Wool trade and economics, Sheep raising, and Wool manufacture, with separate sections for articles in periodicals, articles in the United States consular reports, and for recent speeches in Congress. A very full subject index has been provided which it is hoped will add materially to the value of the list as a key to the literature of wool in the Library of Congress.
