The author index lists the authors of all abstracts produced to June 1963. The title index identifies papers in the above series for which authors are unidentified. The patent index is a listing by subject of all patents abstracted. The subject index consists of approximately four thousand subject headings and cross-references and serves as the subject control for the CRREL Bibliography Project, in addition to its function as a retrieval tool for the reader. The subject coverage for the needs of CRREL and other users is further classified by using topical and geographic subdivisions for the headings. The use of some topics as sub-divisions of other topics has been indicated and crossreferenced as necessary. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Bibliography on Snow, Ice and Permaforst with Abstracts (CRREL Report 12) was initiated in 1952 and is a continuing project of the Science and Technology Division, Cold Regions Project Section of the LIBRARY OF Congress, prepared for the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (USA CRREL) of the Corps of Engineers. Volumes 1-15 were issued as SIPRE Report 12. Volume 16 was the first issued under the new title CRREL Report 12. The present Volume 17 includes abstracts SIP 20001-21000. Primarily, the bibliography provides USA CRREL with current and comprehenbive coverage on scientific imformation, both basic and applied, about living and operating in the polar and subpolar regions. The subjects covered vary from ablation to whiteout and include such diverse topics as avalanche forecasting, ice crystallography, snow mechanics, frost effects, tunneling and excavations, development of trafficable surfaces, permafrost const9uction, and various phases of heat and mass budgets. Search includes coverage of all existing technical information on these subjects published since 1930 with the inclusion of some earlier material in the case of a major treatise or where specific information is required. Priority of selection has been given to current material. Compilation of a working bibliography of articles for future abstracting is done on a continuing basis along with the current abstracting operation. Thus, search in any subject field or language is not exhaustive as of any given time but is completed progressively.
