This is very good book for those who are working on mangrove ecology, taxonomy, physiology and coastal ecology.

Book Mangroves for Building Resilience to Climate Change

Download or read book Mangroves for Building Resilience to Climate Change written by R.N. Mandal and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable book is a comprehensive volume on mangroves, with information accessible to both botany professionals and students. It provides an easy method of identifying mangroves and distinguishing one species from another. What is a mangrove and what are the criteria of mangroves are explained, along with descriptions of distinctions among major mangroves, mangrove associates, mangrove halophytes, and back mangals. Many photos and illustrations are provided, showing the visible features of mangroves. The volume also covers a range of other topics, including habitats and climatic conditions, morphological and reproductive features, how climate change is affecting mangroves and methods of mitigation and conservation. This book is about mangroves, the intertidal coastal forests that struggle every moment against hungry tides because mangroves flourish at the interface zone of land and sea. Like an evergreen forest in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world, mangroves form definite coastal vegetation, providing protection to people living in such fragile zones against the occurrence of frequent natural calamities. Key features: Introduces important facts about mangroves: definition, early records of mangroves, categorization, and more Looks at the distribution of mangroves worldwide along with features of mangrove habitats and climatic conditions Describes the ecology and environmental conditions, particularly the concept of intertidal zones along estuary positions where tidal flows inundate mangroves Discusses the distinct morphological attributes and reproductive phenology of major mangroves Details the attributes of mangroves, covering a total of 78 species of intertidal flora, including 32 true mangroves, along with their diagnostic features, salient attributes, and illustrations for easy identification Highlights the burning environmental issue of climate change and its impact on mangroves Provides a variety of methods of restoration, conservation, and protection of mangroves

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mangroves are distinctive tropical plant communities that occupy the intertidal zone between sea and land. They are of major ecological importance, have economic value as a source of food and raw materials, and serve as a buffer from flooding and climate change-induced sea level rise. Mangroves are under threat from pollution, clearance and over-exploitation, and increasing concern has driven demand for an improved understanding of mangrove species. This book provides an introduction to mangroves, including their taxonomy, habitat-specific features, reproduction and socio-economic value. Fully updated to reflect the last two decades of research, this new edition of a key text includes newly documented taxa, new understandings of vivipary and the evolution of mangrove species, and a rich set of colour illustrations. It will appeal to researchers and students across a range of disciplines, including botany, ecology and zoology.

Book Beyond Tropical Deforestation

Download or read book Beyond Tropical Deforestation written by Didier Babin and published by Editions Quae. This book was released on 2004 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the diagnosis of irreversible destruction of both forests and their biodiversity actually mask a wide range of patterns? Based on the results of natural and social scientists, this book attempts to answer fundamental questions such as: what is deforestation and how do we mesure it? What changes result from deforestation and how do human societies manage these changes? It explores the many and varied aspects of deforestation, a process whose effects are not always as negative as perceived.

Book excerpt: The most respected reference in the field--and a fascinating tourof the world's largest underwater greenhouse . . . MARINE BOTANY Second Edition Unmatched in detail and breadth, this Second Edition of MarineBotany explores the startling diversity and environmental dynamicsof the hundreds of micro- and macroalgae, seagrasses, mangroves, and salt marshes as well as phytoplankton (minute, free-floatingphotosynthetic plants) and benthic communities (attached plants)that comprise the flourishing botanical garden submerged in andaround the surface of our vast oceans. Reflecting the latest in research since the original 1981 edition, long considered the classic reference on marine plant life, thisnew edition's enhanced ecological perspective details the ongoingenvironmental challenges endured by these fragile life-forms.Viewing the structure and function of marine plant communities inthe context of abiotic (light, temperature, water movement, nutrients), biotic (photosynthesis, carbon fixation, competition, predation, symbiosis), and anthropogenic influences, the book moveslayer by layer through the ocean, capturing their photosyntheticand adaptive mechanisms. Pollution in the form of oil spills, heavyand radioactive metals, biological damage wrought from harvestingand aquaculture, and the harmful effects of ozone depletion andUV-B rays are detailed, along with the impact of environmentalfactors on morphological and anatomical adaptations. The book alsodescribes the anthropogenic stresses endured by salt marshes, mangals, seagrass communities, and marine plants of coral reefs, concluding with possible management and restorativetechniques. Marine Botany, Second Edition is both a vivid global map andcomprehensive guide to all of the flourishing forms of plant lifeat our oceans' surface, shores, and depths and the dynamics oftheir survival.

Book The Vegetation and Physiography of Sumatra

Download or read book The Vegetation and Physiography of Sumatra written by Yves Laumonier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifteen years ago, approximately half the world population was estimated to live in continental and insular South-East Asia (Burma, Thailand, Kampuchea, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Philippines). Then the region had a population growth of four million people every month, and the problem of malnutrition was acute for the rural population. International agricultural development organisations decided that their primary aim would be to double existing levels of agricultural production and, taking account of population growth, to double it again by the end of the century (Whyte 1976). Today, while global issues have greatly affected the parameters of the problem, the situation remains both serious and difficult. Despite impressive efforts in education and health, Indonesia for example, where population (179 millions) growth eased off only slightly between 1980 and 1990 (from 2. 3 percent to 1. 9 percent), is having to cope with increasing difficulties in managing natural resources and particularly its evanescent forest assets which, until 1986, were the second largest source of national revenue. Indonesia has the second largest surface area of tropical rain forests in the world (after Brazil) and thus all the problems linked with management and disappearance of those forests. The latest estimate gives a figure of 109 million hectares of forest in 1990, of which 40. 8 million hectares are production forests (Anon. -F AO 1990).

Book Environment and Livelihoods in Tropical Coastal Zones

Download or read book Environment and Livelihoods in Tropical Coastal Zones written by and published by CABI. This book was released on 2006 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the challenges people face in managing agricultural crops, aquaculture, fisheries and related ecosystems in areas of coastal zones in the tropics of Asia, Africa, Australia and South America. Challenges arise from conflicts in the use of natural resources among different stakeholders. Through many case studies, the book discusses the nature of these conflicts and identifies what is known and not known about how to manage them. Case studies include: · trade-offs between enhancing agricultural production and maintenance of rural livelihoods and aquatic biodiversity.· lessons learnt from the conversion of mangrove forests to shrimp farms.
