Book Global Review of Human Settlements

Download or read book Global Review of Human Settlements written by Gyoujin Cho and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global Review of Human Settlements: A Support Paper for Habitat: United Nations Conference on Human Settlement reviews global human settlement conditions and the factors affecting their present and future developments. The report presents information, analyses, and conclusions. It analyzes the causes and effects of the urbanization process; describes the quality of life in human settlements; and presents relevant definitions, list of tables, and country composition by regions. The urbanization process pertains to demographical and economical aspects. Demographical aspects include city size, city growth, migration, and natural increase. Natural population increase accounts for about one-half of urban population while migration from rural to urban places account for the other half. One aspect of the quality of life in human settlements is the prevailing housing conditions. According to the report, housing conditions in most developing countries have become worse in the past ten years due to rapid population growth, to rates of migration from rural to urban places, and to the decline of the rate of increase in national output. The report also contains a list of criteria used nationally to distinguish urban areas from rural areas. For example, South Korea defines urban areas as Seoul or municipalities with 5,000 or more inhabitants. The report is suitable for demographers, economists, environmentalists, ecologists, and policy makers involved in rural development and social services.

Download or read book Habitat Human Settlements in an Urban Age written by Angus M. Gunn and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Habitat: Human Settlements in an Urban Age discusses the man-made environment and its physical setting, focusing on the urban slums of the world and rural hinterlands that caused the slums. Each chapter of this book deals with a specific issue, and the study of each issue is concluded with three questions—one answerable from the text, a second raising value questions for discussion, and a third extending the study beyond the documentation available in this text. Numerous maps, statistical charts, photographs, and end table of facts and figures are also provided to further assist in the investigation process. Topics elaborated in this text include the rural-urban system; urban frontier; rural stagnation; population; poor and rich; hazards of the environment; energy crisis; shelter for the urban millions; and planning for tomorrow. This publication is intended for secondary and tertiary students, but is also a good reference for individuals researching on the issues of habitat or human settlement.

Book Implementing the Habit Agenda Towards Child centred Human Settlement Development in Developing Countries

Download or read book Implementing the Habit Agenda Towards Child centred Human Settlement Development in Developing Countries written by Edmundo Werna and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-24 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1999, this text provides a comprehensive view of the problematique of urban children in developing countries. It starts by demonstrating why it is important to address housing and settlement-related problems faced by the children in developing countries. The book emphasizes that the problematique under scrutiny is so vast that one could face strong difficulties in trying to implement a multitude of isolated/parallel projects and programmes to address a vast number of particular issues. The book demonstrates the existence of strong linkages between the particular issues analyzed. It suggests that a child-centred integrated approach constitutes a good priority for intervention. In terms of evaluation, one could also face difficulties if trying to devise an all-inclusive method for the whole developing world. The book therefore suggests that a simple set of general indicators for evaluation which have international approval should be used in conjunction with locally-constructed indicators.
