Excerpt: ... chapter ix. he was A great orator, and his unofficial public services were numerous, but he had A distaste for public office. Our shallop, long with tempest tried, Floats calmly down life's tranquil tide; Blue skies are laughing overhead, The river sparkles in its bed; The sunbeams from the waters glancing, On the small waves round our vessel dancing, Melt and dissolve in silver foam, And we, in our frail home, To the charmed water-music listen. With all his other accomplishments, Pike was a great orator, who crossed swords with the most noted lawyers and statesmen of his time. His unofficial public services were considerable, and, having the courage of his convictions in an eminent degree, he exercised a potent influence. He was a member of the committee of seven delegates, in 1836, to write an address to the people of Arkansas in regard to the matter of the admission of the Territory to statehood; and the address, of which he is considered the author, is a striking document, concluding with this withering thrust at those who argued against statehood on account of probable increased taxes: "Poor indeed is the plea of poverty, when liberty and man's dearest rights are at stake. Craven-hearted and unworthy American must be he who would be contented to remain a bondman and a hewer of wood to escape paying the paltry pittance of twice his present tax." He participated in a Whig convention at Louisville in 1844, and made a speech which created a sensation. In

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life Story of Albert Pike I have said to you that I very much prefer not to comply with this request, but because both yourself and Mr. Allsopp are so deeply interested in this subject, and because you are both friends of mine, I very reluctantly yield. After all, what is there to be said in a brief space, of this truly Great Man, great in so many ways, after the very readable and very attractive story contained in this volume? Surely there is little I might add, beyond expressing my sincere appreciation of the work itself, and that Mr. Allsopp and yourself will give many, very many Masons, throughout the United States, an opportunity of reading much of the history of the Man and Mason so well loved in life, and whose memory is so sincerely and affectionately cherished. There might be volumes written of the works of General Pike, and then the half would not be told. But it seems to me this Life Story well covers incidents and characteristics of his life, many of which never before have been touched on, that will prove of great interest to all. Book A Life of Albert Pike

Download or read book A Life of Albert Pike written by Walter Lee Brown and published by . This book was released on 1997-07 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Life of Albert Pike, originally published in 1997, is as much a study of antebellum Arkansas as it is a portrait of the former general. A native of Massachusetts, Pike settled in Arkansas Territory in 1832 after wandering the Great Plains of Texas and New Mexico for two years. In Arkansas he became a schoolteacher, newspaperman, lawyer, Whig leader, poet, Freemason, and Confederate general who championed secession and fought against Black suffrage. During his tenure as Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite—a position he held for more than thirty years beginning in 1859—Pike popularized the Masonic movement in the American South and Far West. In the wake of the Civil War, Pike left Arkansas, ultimately settling in Washington, D.C., where he lived out his last years in the Mason's House of the Temple. Drawing on original documents, Pike’s copious writings, and interviews with Pike’s descendants, Walter Lee Brown presents a fascinating personal history that also serves as a rich compendium of Arkansas’s antebellum history.

Book International Masonic Collection 1723 2011

Download or read book International Masonic Collection 1723 2011 written by Larissa P. Watkins and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This extensive bibliography is based on the international Masonic holdings in the library of the Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction of the USA. It represents an important cross section of Masonic literature obtained by the Supreme Council from about 89 countries worldwide and covers a historic period of about three centuries. Anderson's Constitutions, the first book to discuss activities of the Fraternity, was published in 1723. Since that time interest in Freemasonry has developed and emerged on a worldwide scale. The House of the Temple's International Masonic Collection now contains over 8,000 volumes written in 25 languages. The bibliography is illustrated with more than 1,000 images which graphically depict major classic themes in Masonic symbolism. Begun at the initiative of Grand Commander Albert Pike in the mid-nineteenth century, it now covers over one hundred years of acquisition effort. The geographic scope of this bibliography, along with historic period of literary coverage provides unique insight into the nature, substance, and evolution of Masonic philosophy of at least eight generations of Masonic authors worldwide. More important, it is the first time in the history of American bibliography that the international Masonic fraternity is documented in context as the oldest universal brotherhood. Thus, it is a fundamental extension to the two previous Masonic catalogs published by this experienced author. We are pleased to announce that this is the third "must-have" catalog for Masonic libraries, collectors, and students of Masonic literature. Co-published with the Library of the Supreme Council.Larissa P. Watkins is Assistant to the Librarian at the Library of the Supreme Council in Washington, D.C. Educated in the Russian Federation as a journalist and librarian, she holds an honors degree in Library Science from the Cultural Sciences Institute of Higher Learning in Ussurisk, Primorskiy Krai, and was Director of Acquisition and Automation at the State Scientific Library in the Maritime Provinces in Vladivostok.
