Book Inventing Temperature

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hasok Chang
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2004-08-05
  • ISBN : 0199883696
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Inventing Temperature written by Hasok Chang and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-05 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is temperature, and how can we measure it correctly? These may seem like simple questions, but the most renowned scientists struggled with them throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. In Inventing Temperature, Chang examines how scientists first created thermometers; how they measured temperature beyond the reach of standard thermometers; and how they managed to assess the reliability and accuracy of these instruments without a circular reliance on the instruments themselves. In a discussion that brings together the history of science with the philosophy of science, Chang presents the simple eet challenging epistemic and technical questions about these instruments, and the complex web of abstract philosophical issues surrounding them. Chang's book shows that many items of knowledge that we take for granted now are in fact spectacular achievements, obtained only after a great deal of innovative thinking, painstaking experiments, bold conjectures, and controversy. Lurking behind these achievements are some very important philosophical questions about how and when people accept the authority of science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the main methods used for thermal properties measurement. It aims to be accessible to all those, specialists in heat transfer or not, who need to measure the thermal properties of a material. The objective is to allow them to choose the measurement method the best adapted to the material to be characterized, and to pass on them all the theoretical and practical information allowing implementation with the maximum of precision.

Book The Art of Cryogenics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Guglielmo Ventura
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2010-07-07
  • ISBN : 0080554369
  • Pages : 379 pages

Download or read book The Art of Cryogenics written by Guglielmo Ventura and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-07-07 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cryogenics is the study of low temperature interactions - temperatures well below those existing in the natural universe. The book covers a large spectrum of experimental cases, including basic vacuum techniques, indispensable in cryogenics. Guidance in solving experimental problems and numerous numerical examples are given, as are examples of the applications of cryogenics in such areas as underground detectors and space applications. Updated tables of low-temperature data on materials are also presented, and the book is supplemented with a rich bibliography. Researchers (graduate and above) in the fields of physics, engineering and chemistry with an interest in the technology and applications of low-temperature measurements, will find this book invaluable. - Experiments described in technical detail - Description of newest cryogenic apparatus - Applications in multidisciplinary areas - Data on cryogenic properties of new materials - Current reference review

Book Fundamentals of Temperature Control

Download or read book Fundamentals of Temperature Control written by William K. Roots and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Temperature Control focuses on theoretical foundations and principles involved in temperature control. The book first offers information on thermal-process representation and response. Discussions focus on response to damped harmonic inputs, principle of superposition, bode diagrams, ramp, step, and impulse functions, harmonic response, electrical analogs, basic equations, and thermal conductivity. The text then examines common thermal elements and open-loop temperature control. The publication ponders on closed-loop temperature control and the dynamics of discontinuous temperature control. Topics include dynamics in the phase plane and time domain, dynamic analysis, closed-loop control, secondary feedback, and cooling processes. The manuscript then examines quasi-continuous and continuous temperature control, as well as quasi-continuously controlled process behavior in the time domain and quasi-continuously controlled process behavior in the phase plane. The text is a vital source of data for researchers interested in the fundamentals of temperature control.

Book Expanding the Vision of Sensor Materials

Download or read book Expanding the Vision of Sensor Materials written by Committee on New Sensor Technologies: Materials and Applications and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-07-06 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in materials science and engineering have paved the way for the development of new and more capable sensors. Drawing upon case studies from manufacturing and structural monitoring and involving chemical and long wave-length infrared sensors, this book suggests an approach that frames the relevant technical issues in such a way as to expedite the consideration of new and novel sensor materials. It enables a multidisciplinary approach for identifying opportunities and making realistic assessments of technical risk and could be used to guide relevant research and development in sensor technologies.

Book Instrumentation Reference Book

Download or read book Instrumentation Reference Book written by Walt Boyes and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2009-11-25 with total page 929 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discipline of instrumentation has grown appreciably in recent years because of advances in sensor technology and in the interconnectivity of sensors, computers and control systems. This 4e of the Instrumentation Reference Book embraces the equipment and systems used to detect, track and store data related to physical, chemical, electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of materials, systems and operations. While traditionally a key area within mechanical and industrial engineering, understanding this greater and more complex use of sensing and monitoring controls and systems is essential for a wide variety of engineering areas--from manufacturing to chemical processing to aerospace operations to even the everyday automobile. In turn, this has meant that the automation of manufacturing, process industries, and even building and infrastructure construction has been improved dramatically. And now with remote wireless instrumentation, heretofore inaccessible or widely dispersed operations and procedures can be automatically monitored and controlled. This already well-established reference work will reflect these dramatic changes with improved and expanded coverage of the traditional domains of instrumentation as well as the cutting-edge areas of digital integration of complex sensor/control systems. - Thoroughly revised, with up-to-date coverage of wireless sensors and systems, as well as nanotechnologies role in the evolution of sensor technology - Latest information on new sensor equipment, new measurement standards, and new software for embedded control systems, networking and automated control - Three entirely new sections on Controllers, Actuators and Final Control Elements; Manufacturing Execution Systems; and Automation Knowledge Base - Up-dated and expanded references and critical standards
