Book excerpt: "The decision to build the James Bay Hydro-electric Project was announced in April, 1971, by Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa. Negotiations with the Inuit and Cree bands in the area resulted in the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement in 1975, the first aboriginal rights contract between any level of government and representatives of an aboriginal people. Works by anthropologists, writers, government departments, and native people have added immeasurably to our understanding of this important aspect of Canadian history, and this research guide is meant to provide scholars and the general public with a thematic overview of the literature"--Introduction, p. 4.

Book excerpt: Since 1970 in Quebec, there has been immense change for the Cree, who now live with the consequences of Quebec's massive development of the North. Home Is the Hunter presents the historical, environmental, and cultural context from which this recent story grows. Hans Carlson shows how the Cree view their lands as their home, their garden, and their memory of themselves as a people. By investigating the Cree's three hundred years of contact with outsiders, he illuminates the process of cultural negotiation at the foundation of ongoing political and environmental debates. This book offers a way of thinking about indigenous peoples' struggles for rights and environmental justice in Canada and elsewhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audio Files located on Soundcloud Essential Song: Three Decades of Northern Cree Music, a study of subarctic Cree hunting songs, is the first detailed ethnomusicology of the northern Cree of Quebec and Manitoba. The result of more than two decades spent in the North learning from the Cree, Lynn Whidden’s account discusses the tradition of the hunting songs, their meanings and origins, and their importance to the hunt. She also examines women’s songs, and traces the impact of social change—including the introduction of hymns, Gospel tunes, and country music—on the song traditions of these communities. The book also explores the introduction of powwow song into the subarctic and the Crees struggle to maintain their Aboriginal heritage—to find a kind of song that, like the hunting songs, can serve as a spiritual guide and force. Including profiles of the hunters and their songs and accompanied (online) by original audio tracks of more than fifty Cree hunting songs, Essential Song makes an important contribution to ethnomusicology, social history, and Aboriginal studies.
