Download or read book Report on a Proposition to Modify the Plan of Instruction written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on a Proposition to Modify the Plan of Instruction: In the University of Alabama, Made to the Faculty of the University, Read Before the Faculty, Sept; 21, and Before the Board of Trustees, Sept; 26, 1854 It is by no means the belief of the undersigned, that those members of the Board whose names are appended to the request, which has led to the appointment of this Committee, are all of them, by previous conviction, in favor of the introduction into this University of the system of which they ask for the details. It is quite sufiicient to suppose that the request was dictated by a desire, on the one hand, to know explicitly and defi nitely what it is which it is proposed to substitute here, in place of a system that, if not the best7 has, neverthe less, the sanction of some centuries of experiment, and the present support of the general sufirage; and an equal desire, on the other, to satisfy the outside advo cates of change, that the Board are always willing to examine any project for the improvement of the Uni versity, which, in the view of any friend of the cause of education, may deserve their deliberate attention. Those members of the Board to whom this inquiry is owing, are therefore regarded by the undersigned as occupying, equally with their colleagues, the attitude of judges, whose opinions are yet to be expressed, and not that of partizans, who are waiting only to act upon a judgment already formed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turning the Tide is an institutional and cultural history of a dramatic decade of change at the University of Alabama set against the backdrop of desegregation, the continuing civil rights struggle, and the growing antiwar movement. This book documents the period when a handful of University of Alabama student activists formed an alliance with President Frank A. Rose, his staff, and a small group of progressive-minded professors in order to transform the university during a time of social and political turmoil. Together they engaged in a struggle against Governor George Wallace and a state legislature that reflected the worst aspects of racism in a state where the passage of civil rights legislation in 1964 and 1965 did little to reduce segregation and much to inflame the fears and passions of many white Alabamians. Earl H. Tilford details the origins of the student movement from within the Student Government Association, whose leaders included Ralph Knowles and future governor Don Siegelman, among others; the participation of key members of “The Machine,” the political faction made up of the powerful fraternities and sororities on campus; and the efforts of more radical non-Greek students like Jack Drake, Ed Still, and Sondra Nesmith. Tilford also details the political maneuverings that drove the cause of social change through multiple administrations at the university. Turning the Tide highlights the contributions of university presidents Frank A. Rose and David Mathews, as well as administrators like the dean of men John L. Blackburn, who supported the student leaders but also encouraged them to work within the system rather than against it. Based on archival research, interviews with many of the principal participants, and the author’s personal experiences, Tilford’s Turning the Tide is a compelling portrait of a university in transition during the turbulence surrounding the civil rights and anti-war movements of the 1960s.

Book Yea Alabama A Peek into the Past of One of the Most Storied Universities in the Nation

Download or read book Yea Alabama A Peek into the Past of One of the Most Storied Universities in the Nation written by David M. Battles and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Yea, Alabama historical series explores the narrative of the storied University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in the United States, in a way not previously published. Years of research into primary documents, many only recently discovered or rediscovered, bring to the fore many new facts, new stories, new characters, new revelations, and new photos that offer the fullest picture of the University yet. This history of bringing higher education to what was just a few years earlier the American western frontier is filled with enthralling human interest stories that, just in volume one (1819–1871), include: • dramatic intergenerational rivalries (wilderness-influenced, wealthy young men challenging professors and presidents whom the students consider to be of a lower social class) that on more than one occasion force the University to close its doors and try again; • political power and intrigue that often bring the school to its knees; • town versus gown issues that sometimes explode onto the pages of history; • a fateful decision that brings the University into the crosshairs of the Union, ultimately resulting in the near total destruction of the institution; • the University’s multiyear post-bellum effort to reopen that witnesses major confrontations between the people of Alabama and the radical state government; • the never-before-told story of the University of Alabama, African Americans, and slavery.

Book The University of Alabama

Download or read book The University of Alabama written by Robert Oliver Mellown and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University of Alabama: A Guide to the Campusand Its Architecture is a richly illustrated guidebook to the architecture and development of the University of Alabama’s campus as it has evolved over the last two centuries. In 1988 the University of Alabama Press published Robert Oliver Mellown’s The University of Alabama: A Guide to the Campus, a culmination of a decade’s worth of research into both the facts and the legends surrounding the architecture, history, and traditions of the Capstone. Over twenty years later, this new guide brings to light the numerous additions, expansions, and renovations the university has undergone on its spacious grounds in Tuscaloosa. In addition to updated sections devoted to the university’s historic landmarks—such as Foster Auditorium, where “the stand in the schoolhouse door” occurred; Denny Chimes, where the handprints and footprints of famous Tide athletes are memorialized in concrete; and the Gorgas House, which with stood the destruction of Union troops at the end of the Civil War—new sections account for the acquisition of Bryce Hospital’s campus, the expansions at Bryant-Denny Stadium to accommodate the growing Crimson Tide fan base, and the burgeoning student recreation facilities, playing fields, and residential communities. Chapters are arranged into various campus tours for walking or driving—Antebellum, Victorian, Early Twentieth-Century, East Quad, West Quad, Science and Engineering Corridor, Student Life, Bryce, Medical, Southeast, Athletics, and Off Campus. Alumni, prospective students and their parents, new faculty, out-of-state visitors, and foreign dignitaries will all welcome this useful, compact, and colorful guide to one of the most beautiful campuses in the country.
