Book Byzantium After Byzantium

Download or read book Byzantium After Byzantium written by Nicolae Iorga and published by Center For Romanian Studies. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in French in 1935, the author's formula Byzantium after Byzantium defines several centuries of world history. Iorga points out the great contributions of Byzantine civilization to the Western world, especially during the Renaissance. He demonstrates that Byzantium survived through its people and local autonomies, as well as through its exiles--clerics, scholars, merchants, and political officials. One of the most important expressions of this was found in the Romanian principalities where Greeks from the Phanar district of Istanbul played a major role in Romanian political life, defining an entire period of Romanian history--the Phanariot Period. They continued the Byzantine ideas, aspirations, education, and way of life. All of this allows us to speak of a Byzantium after Byzantium.

Book Paradoxia Epidemica

Download or read book Paradoxia Epidemica written by Rosalie Littell Colie and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paradoxia Epidemica is a broad-ranging critical study of Renaissance thought, showing how the greatest writers of the period from Erasmus and Rabelais to Donne, Milton, and Shakespeare made conscious use of paradox not only as a figure of speech but as a mode of thought, a way of perceiving the universe, God, nature, and man himself. The book consists of an introduction (historical and topological) and sixteen chapters grouped according to broad types of paradox: rhetorical, theological, ontological, epistemological. Within this framework the author interprets individual writings or art forms as parts of a rich tradition. Originally published in 1966. They examine the phenomenon of citadels in a comparative perspective in Anatolia and neighboring regions. Archaeology, art history, and history are brought to bear on the phenomenon of the citadel in its urban context"--

Book History and Archaeology of Byzantine Asia Minor

Download or read book History and Archaeology of Byzantine Asia Minor written by Clive Foss and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Foss has been a leading figure in pointing out to Byzantinists the necessity of taking archaeological evidence into account when making any historical reconstruction. These studies have as their purpose, in large part, such an evaluation of the archaeological data, including the evidence of coin finds, weighing it against and combining it with the information gathered from written sources. They demonstrate the vital importance of such material for some of the central issues of Byzantine history, notably the question to what extent did towns and cities, the centres of civilised life in the classical world, perpetuate this into the Byzantine period. As Foss shows, the physical record makes it plain that the structures inherited from Roman times fell into decay, and that the land took on a new medieval aspect of fortresses and villages. The first articles in this volume deal specifically with this transformation in the Byzantine heartlands of Asia Minor, and attribute a key role to the destructive Persian invasions of the 7th century. The following pieces, based extensively on the results of survey work, explore how the patterns of settlement evolved in particular areas, from the Roman up into the Turkish periods.
