Book Adult Bible Studies Winter 2016 2017 Student

Download or read book Adult Bible Studies Winter 2016 2017 Student written by Kevin Baker and published by Cokesbury. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winter theme: Creation: A Divine Cycle Luke | Psalms | Galatians This winter, lessons in Adult Bible Studies follow the theme, "Creation: A Divine Cycle." With the advent of the Savior by the power of the Holy Spirit, God set in motion the fulfillment of the divine plan of salvation. Through Luke's Gospel, several psalms, and the epistle to the Galatians, we explore God's ongoing actions in blessing and reconciling the whole creation. The student book writer is Kevin Baker; Brian Russell is the writer for the teacher book. The Savior Has Been Born The four lessons in this unit are developed from the Gospel of Luke. Lesson One explores how Mary, a virgin, received and joyfully accepted the announcement that she had been highly favored by God to give birth to God's Son. Lesson Two looks at the affirmation of Elizabeth, Mary's cousin, to her news. Lesson Three focuses on John's mission as the forerunner of the Savior. The Christmas Day lesson deals with the birth of Jesus and the circumstances and events pursuant to it. Praise From and for God's Creation The five lessons in this unit employ five different psalms. Several psalms emphasize praise for God that emanates from creation itself. Others invite us to praise God for creation. The Birthing of a New Community This unit has four lessons from Galatians that show us how God's creative process can be seen through the birthing of a new faith community with Jesus Christ as its foundation. The lessons address the importance of spiritual freedom, cooperation, and righteous living in building and maintaining the community. Register for the Forums and you can post and read comments about the lessons from other readers.

This book was released on with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The worldwide Flood is one of the most discounted records in the Scriptures. Yet it is supported around the world by historical accounts. Take a look at feasability studies on the safety and the stocking of the Ark. The Geologic Column ought to prove that fossils reveal the age of the earth. They show progression from simple to complex organisms over millions of years. But do they? Take a look at "living fossils." Meet the extinct creature found only in the "oldest" layers but more complex than "later" life forms. Consider the real conditions that surrounded the Flood and the Ice Age.

Book Adult Bible Studies Fall 2021 Student

Download or read book Adult Bible Studies Fall 2021 Student written by Gregory M. Weeks and published by Cokesbury. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sociologists studying the early church often attribute its growth to the sense of belonging it offered people in a world where belonging was limited to those with things such as property, high status, and birthright. Scripture is clear that we belong to God’s people even when we appear to be outsiders. After over 2000 years of existence as an institution, we can easily take for granted that we know what the church is. It is instructive to look at how the first members of the church understood the purpose of assembling as a group, how this has shaped our understanding of church, and how our understanding might need to expand. The opening of God’s people to both Jews and Greeks, men and women, masters and slaves required people previously unaccustomed to eating together to sit down at a common table. The practice of open table fellowship in the church is a sign of God’s shared abundance, ministry of reconciliation, and celebration. Adult Bible Studies Fall 2021 Theme: Belong Unit 1: Outside In Sociologists studying the story of the early church often attribute the growth of the church to the sense of belonging that it offered people in a world where belonging was limited to those with things such as property, high status, and/or birthright. This unit of lessons looks at the various ways that the Bible makes clear how we belong to God’s people even when we appear to be outsiders. Several of the lessons point out where we as human beings insert distinctions that restrict membership within the community of Christ. Scriptures: Jeremiah 29:1-23; Luke 7:36-50; Galatians 2:11-21; Philippians 3:2-21; Ephesians 2:19-21 Spiritual Practice: Hospitality Unit 2: Into the Future After over 2000 years of existence as an institution, we can easily take for granted that we know what the church is. This unit invites readers to look at it from the view of the community living into the future. The Greek word for church, ekklesia, is not a word that the first members of the church associated with a religious activity. The word signifies the assembly of the people of God. It is instructive to look at what their understanding of the purpose of assembling as a group signified, how it has shaped our understanding of church, and how reading these texts might renew and expand our understanding. Scriptures: Acts 2:37-47;1 Corinthians 12:12-31; Matthew 16:13-19; Revelation 3:1-6, 14-20; Deuteronomy 29:10-29 Spiritual Practice: Community Unit 3: The Fellowship of the Table Once one enters the Church through baptism, the central identity marker for membership in the church is participation in Communion. The opening of God’s people to both Jews and Greeks, men and women, masters and slaves required people previously unaccustomed to eating together to sit down at a common table. When we look at the Gospel narratives, we see Jesus modeling open table fellowship. In this unit, we will look at the significance of the practice of open table fellowship in the church as a sign of God’s shared abundance, ministry of reconciliation, and celebration. Scriptures: John 6:1-15; 1 Samuel 25:2-39; 1 Corinthians 11:17-34; Isaiah 25:6-10a; 55:1-3 Spiritual Practice: Open Table Fellowship Adult Bible Study components include: Student Book Published quarterly, each week's Student Book lesson lists background Scripture, features key verses, provides reliable and relevant biblical explanation and application, and more, in a readable font size that is accessible to everyone. Book Adult Bible Studies Spring 2016 Student

Download or read book Adult Bible Studies Spring 2016 Student written by John P. Gilbert and published by Cokesbury. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spring theme: The Gift of Faith This spring, lessons in Adult Bible Studies follow the theme, “The Gift of Faith.” The student book writer is Jack Gilbert; Von Unruh is the writer for the teacher book. Tests of Faith The quarter’s first four lessons deal with powerful faith, simple faith, struggling faith, and resurrection faith by examining biblical texts from Mark’s Gospel. Restorative Faith The first lesson in the second unit examines Luke’s account of the healing of the centurion’s servant, while the second lesson continues in Luke 7 with a focus on the woman who anointed Jesus’ feet with expensive perfume. The third lesson features Luke’s account of Jesus healing the demon-possessed man; and the next lesson, also from Luke, explores the account of the prodigal son. The last lesson in this unit focuses on Jesus’ teaching about forgiveness and giving and receiving correction. Fullness of Faith The four lessons that conclude this quarter’s study again come from Luke’s Gospel. The first looks at Jesus’ healing of the ten lepers; the second examines Jesus’ contrast of the Pharisee and the tax collector. The third lesson explores Jesus’ teaching about having childlike faith. The final lesson of this quarter highlights joyous faith by reviewing Jesus’ encounter with the tax collector Zacchaeus. Based on the Uniform Series, this quarterly study presents stimulating lessons that explore the biblical message and how to apply it to daily life. The curriculum helps adults move from a focus on the Word to reflection on personal, family, church, and community concerns. Ideal for a variety of settings, lessons are Bible-based, Christ-focused, and United Methodist – approved curriculum for use in adult Sunday school classes, mid-week Bible study, and small-group studies. Available in regular and large print or as an eBook.

Beginning Biblical Studies does not assume familiarity with the contents or origins of the Bible, or the Bible's major events, characters, and themes. To further support beginning students, each major section begins with an overview followed later by a more detailed explanation, to gradually clarify complex ideas or developments. Keywords and concepts are listed at the beginning of each major section, then are reinforced throughout the text. Instructors may choose from a variety of Bible texts for use with this book. Several appendices in Beginning Biblical Studies provide students and teachers with additional material on particular topics such as biblical criticism, Israelite worship, literary forms in the prophetic books and the Gospels, important biblical terms and concepts, to name a few. Timelines and maps help to make ideas clear. Appropriate for all introductory Scripture courses and core introductory religion courses where theology and Scripture are covered together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classrooms as communities are temporary, but the racial effects can be long term. The biblical studies classroom can be a site of personal and social transformation. To make it a space for positive change, the contributors to this volume question and reevaluate traditional teaching practices and assessment tools that foreground white, Western scholarship in order to offer practical guidance for an antiracist pedagogy. The introduction and fifteen essays provide tools for engaging issues of social context and scriptural authority, nationalism and religious identities, critical race theory, and how race, gender, and class can be addressed empathetically. Contributors Sonja Anderson, Randall C. Bailey, Eric D. Barreto, Denise Kimber Buell, Greg Carey, Haley Gabrielle, Wilda C. Gafney, Julián Andrés González Holguín, Sharon Jacob, Tat-siong Benny Liew, Francisco Lozada Jr., Shelly Matthews, Roger S. Nam, Wongi Park, Jean-Pierre Ruiz, Abraham Smith, and Kay Higuera Smith share their experience creating classrooms that are spaces that enable the production of new knowledge without reproducing a white subject of the geopolitical West.
