Download or read book Biblical Profiles written by Roland James Faley and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roland J. Faley has written a penetrating, absorbing account of Old Testament personalities, male and female, good and bad, well known, and not so well known, but all compelling, fully fleshed out, and relevant to this day. They include Hannah, God's faithful servant; Doeg, a false, Iago-like figure; Hophni and Phinehas, profaners of all things of God; and Saul, Israel's great and divinely appointed first king. This is a classic compendium of stories chosen to delight and shock, to disturb, haunt and teach us about what we should and should not do. The boldly drawn characters leap out from the pages to admonish us to go on with our search for solutions to problems that span the centuries.

Download or read book In Search of Faith written by Howard W. Roberts and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore several of the stories of biblical characters who were seekers . . . The search by some of these people became watersheds for later seekers. For example, Abraham's search resulted in a clear understanding of radical monotheism. Ruth's seeking and searching challenged the notion that God's love and acceptance were tied to racial purity . . . Allow yourself to be a seeker as you read. May part of your seeking be to consider where your story and each of these stories intersect and may those intersections be places where you seek God and discover that already God is seeking you. --from the Preface In Search of Faith is an exploration of biblical characters who struggled to define their faith. Roberts help readers to identify with biblical characters; to discover kinship with seekers of another era; and to read about themselves in the stories. Some of the biblical characters discussed include Ruth, Jacob, Peter and Hosea. The stories of these biblical characters can be used in a sermon series or a course of study for a small group. In Search of Faith can be a guiding force in the daily lives of seekers by addressing the quest for personal meaning and the desire to belong in community.

Book Reframing Biblical Studies

Download or read book Reframing Biblical Studies written by Ellen Van Wolde and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2009-06-23 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, biblical studies and studies of the written and material culture of the ancient Near East have been fragmented, governed by experts who are confined within their individual disciplines’ methodological frameworks and patterns of thinking. The consequence has been that, at present, concepts and the terminology for examining the interaction of textual and historical complexes are lacking. However, we can learn from the cognitive sciences. Until the end of the 1980s, neurophysiologists, psychologists, pediatricians, and linguists worked in complete isolation from one another on various aspects of the human brain. Then, beginning in the 1990s, one group began to focus on processes in the brain, thereby requiring that cell biologists, neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, linguists, and other relevant scientists collaborate with each other. Their investigation revealed that the brain integrates all kinds of information; if this were not the case, we would not be able to catch even a glimpse of the brain’s processing activity. By analogy, van Wolde’s proposal for biblical scholarship is to extend its examination of single elements by studying the integrative structures that emerge out of the interconnectivity of the parts. This analysis is based on detailed studies of specific relationships among data of diverse origins, using language as the essential device that links and permits expression. This method can be called a cognitive relational approach. Van Wolde bases her work on cognitive concepts developed by Ronald Langacker. With these concepts, biblical scholars will be able to study emergent cognitive structures that issue from biblical words and texts in interaction with historical complexes. Van Wolde presents a method of analysis that biblical scholars can follow to investigate interactions among words and texts in the Hebrew Bible, material and nonmaterial culture, and comparative textual and historical contexts. In a significant portion of the book, she then exemplifies this method of analysis by applying it to controversial concepts and passages in the Hebrew Bible (the crescent moon; the in-law family; the city gate; differentiation and separation; Genesis 1, 34; Leviticus 18, 20; Numbers 5, 35; Deuteronomy 21; and Ezekiel 18, 22, 33).

  • Author : Thomas O. Hovestol
  • Publisher : Moody Publishers

Download or read book Spiritual Profiling written by Thomas O. Hovestol and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus’ world was far more religiously pluralistic than most of us imagine. He grew up and headquartered His ministry in “Galilee of the Gentiles.” He regularly rubbed shoulders with polytheistic and superstitious Romans, with philosophical and sophisticated Greeks, with hard-partying pagans, and with God-fearing Africans. The Bible tells us that Jesus, unlike His fellow countrymen, did not avoid the despised and syncretistic Samaritans. Nor did Jesus shun the Jews who were considered persona non grata in the local synagogues, like those who worked for the occupying government, or who rejected Hebrew ways in favor of Greek, or who lived hellion lifestyles. Moreover, Jesus interacted with individuals representing all of the major sects of Judaism--Sadducees, Pharisees, Zealots, and Essenes. And these included a huge variety of spiritual expression from the emotional to the contemplative, from the spontaneous to the staid, from Bible-thumpers to compassion-lovers, from those who push religion to the four corners of their lives while others passionately seek to push it to the four corners of the globe. Is there some way to categorize, organize and understand the varieties of spiritual expression that Jesus encountered? Is it possible that the kinds of people Jesus dealt with in His day are similar to the ones we face today? Are there prototypical and stereotypical religious patterns to which people gravitate? And why do we do so? If we lived in Jesus’ day, what spiritual “camp” would be most like ours? How would Jesus approach us? What would he do with us? What would our Spiritual Profile be?

Book Profiles of the Patriarchs Volume 2

Download or read book Profiles of the Patriarchs Volume 2 written by Cyril J. Barber and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). In his remarkably perceptive book entitled The Life and Times of the Patriarchs, William H. Thomson, MD, LLD (son of William M. Thomson, author of The Land and the Book) draws our attention to the fact that the story of the life of Jacob and of his family occupies more than half of the book of Genesis. He continued, This is no more than it should, considering how full that story is of instruction. Thus Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are repeatedly named together, but Jacob differed more from his father and grandfather than men usually differ from each other. Every human being grows up in an environment which inevitably reacts upon his personality. So true is this that the experience of each life has its own lesson. In Jacob's case we see how one experience after another was needed for Jacob to become the prevailing Prince with God. Isaac's unreasoning partiality toward Esau was no justification for the wicked imposition practiced on him by his wife, whereby Jacob secured the birthright. This resulted in Jacob being sent to his mother's brother in order to escape the wrath of Esau. But instead of departing on his long journey laden with gifts, his going had to be in secret. He returned many years later to face new challenges, and one by one God took pains to remove from his life the things that were impediments to his spiritual growth. How the Lord did this is the subject of this book. O how happy are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord. O how happy are those who observe His testimonies, who seek Him with all their heart (Psalm 119:1-2).
