Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible as Literature: An Introduction For some time past there has been a growing conviction of the need of a more complete and comprehensive study of the Bible in all the colleges. Quite recently the matter has received new emphasis and practical direction. A complete course of Bible study has been outlined by a joint committee representing the Eastern and Western sections of the Association of College Instructors in the Bible, the departments of colleges and universities and of teacher training of the Religious Education Association, the Student Y. M. C. A. and Y. W. C. A., and Sunday School Council. The proposed curriculum is not merely a theoretical outline but has already been tested, in part, at some of the leading colleges of the country. The complete course will include the following books: "Old Testament History," by Prof. Ismar J. Peritz, of Syracuse University; "New Testament History," by Dr. Harris Franklin Rail, President of Iliff School of Theology; "The Bible as Literature," by Prof. Irving F. Wood and Prof. Elihu Grant, of Smith College; "Social Institutions and Ideals of the Bible," by Prof. Theodore G. Soares, University of Chicago; and "The History, Principles and Methods of Religious Education," by Prof. F. H. Swift, University of Minnesota. The publishers take pleasure in announcing that the volumes on New Testament History and The Bible as Literature are now ready. Professor Peritz's volume on Old Testament History will be published in time for use during the second half of the college year 1914-1915, and the remaining volumes by Professors Soares and Swift in time for the opening of the 1915-1916 college year. These books have been prepared with a view to the requirements of the college course and the needs of the student. Book A Biblical Introduction Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Biblical Introduction Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by W. H. Bennett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Biblical Introduction, Vol. 1 Brief notes as to the light thrown by Assyrian, Babylonian, and other inscriptions on the history of Israel have been added to the passages of the historical books which they illustrate. Under each book, or - where the present books are collections of earlier works - under each section, some account is given of its use in the New Testament; this account, however, is not exhaustive. The references to Driver's Introduction are to the Sixth Edition; but, except where specially stated, the numbers of the pages are those of the Fifth and earlier editions, which are given in brackets [ ] in the text of the Sixth. Special attention is called to the explanation of symbols and technical terms on pp. 15 ff., 24 f., 32, 62 n. This account of Biblical criticism is published in the faith that "Any criticism of the human element in the Bible, which makes it more truly human, more analogous to the workings of the human spirit other-where, tends without question to enhance our sense of its reality and worth." The authors of this volume trust that it may help its readers to a truer understanding of the sacred Scriptures, and to a fuller appreciation of their unique importance; and may confirm them in the evangelical recognition of the supreme authority of the Bible as interpreted and applied by the Holy Spirit for the spiritual life. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Introduction to the Literature of the Bible It may, however, be desired by some to use a work of this kind as an assistance in their studies. What help I have offered in this way has been reserved for an appendix. It is a sound pr1nc1ple that the sustained attention necessary for literary reading and appreciation should be kept distinct from the attitude of examination and reference which is implied in every kind of study. Possibly those who merely turn over the pages of this appendix may think the reading lists over-elaborate and detailed. I would point out that this is so only in appearance; and the reason is that the numbering of chapters and verses in ordinary Bibles in no way agrees with the actual structure which necessitates a re-index ing of the divisions proper for literary study. One who uses an edition in which the proper structure is pre sented to the eye will hardly need the help of reading lists. In a second appendix I have endeavoured to meet the requests I am accustomed to receive for advice as to progressive study in biblical literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Old Testament, Vol. 1 of 2 Bleek's Introduction to the Old Testament which is here for the first time presented in an English dress, has been long and favourably known to Biblical students as, perhaps, the most complete and trustworthy of the works which, under the same title, and professing the same oh jects, have appeared with such rapidity in Germany during the last quarter of a century. Many as these so-called Introductions are, and various their degrees of excel lence, this of Bleek's deserves to be specially commended for the union of the qualities most essential to the character of such a work: thorough acquaintance with every depart ment of the subject, breadth of view, honesty and fairness of treatment, quickness of perception of the main points at issue, calmness of judgment, and, above all, deep reverence for Holy Scripture as the Revelation of the Mind and Will of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General Introduction to the Bible, Vol. 1 of 4 Our great Catholic writers on scholastic philosophy and theology were trained to define what they are talking about, and their thought is luminous. But in many other branches of learning writers love to flounder about on limitless topics and forget to mark out, with any degree of precision, the proper limits of the subject under discussion. They seem to have heard that to define is divine, and they have no ambitions. But the skill with which some of them steer clear of any effort at definition is proof conclu sive of a high order of ability, and that they would succeed, if they only made an effort. Book Bible Literature An Introductory View of the Bible and Its Books

Download or read book Bible Literature An Introductory View of the Bible and Its Books written by John A. W. Haas and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Literature; An Introductory View of the Bible and Its Books: For the General Reader, and Sixth Grade d104-Book for Schools and Colleges The place of this book in the Graded Series determines its character; but all who seek a simple and short statement of Biblical literature from an orthodox point of view may be aided by it. Its use as the last and highest text-book of a system explains its form and also its limitations. Among the latter are the running of the matter into a mould of 52 Chapters to correspond to the Sundays of one year, the precedence of the New Testament to conform in a measure to the Church year, the necessarily uniform length of each lesson to meet the time-limit of Sunday-school teaching, and the following of the order of the books as they are in the Bible rather than their historical order. The attainment of those to be taught and the restrictions of space made it necessary to simplify, and as a rule to refer only to the inner, readily apparent and controllable testimony of a book as to its time and author. But while the outer historical testimony has not been given, the positions taken accord with the clearest and best external historical evidence. Where critical questions have become or are becoming more or less known they are indicated in this book and the line of defense shown, mostly in footnotes. Those who know the literature will readily see what has been consulted. The best and latest works have been considered. The positions taken are the conservative ones. In the New Testament they have solid ground The discussions on the Old Testament are still in progress. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Hand-Book: An Introduction to the Study of Sacred The following pages are intended as an introduction to the study of Scripture, and are written with the view of being used by all classes of intelligent readers. On a first perusal by younger readers, it is suggested that the sections marked in the table of contents, be omitted, together with such paragraphs as may be thought too abstruse. The attempt to adapt the work to both young and advanced students, renders such a selection at the outset desirable; and the whole has been written so as. To make the portions read, in the first in stance, easily intelligible and complete in themselves. On the other hand, any who wish to consult the book on particular subj ects - as on the study of the Greek Testament, or on the proof of particular doctrines - can easily do so by the help of the index. If any wish to connect the study of, these pages with the study of Theological Science generally, he will find the fol lowing classification important. Book Plain Theology for Plain People

Download or read book Plain Theology for Plain People written by Charles Octavius Boothe and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday Christians need practical and accessible theology. In this handbook first published in 1890, Charles Octavius Boothe simply and beautifully lays out the basics of theology for common people. "Before the charge 'know thyself,'" Boothe wrote, "ought to come the far greater charge, 'know thy God.'" He brought the heights of academic theology down to everyday language, and he helps us do the same today. Plain Theology for Plain People shows that evangelicalism needs the wisdom and experience of African American Christians. Walter R. Strickland II reintroduces this forgotten masterpiece for today. Lexham Classics are beautifully typeset new editions of classic works. Each book has been carefully transcribed from the original texts, ensuring an accurate representation of the writing as the author intended it to be read.

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of the Gospels Classic Reprint written by Brooke Foss Westcott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Gospels In issuing the new edition of this Essay, I can only repeat what I said nearly six years ago. The book remains with all its shortcomings such as it was when first written. Once again some mistakes which I had detected myself, and others which friends pointed out to me, have been corrected: a few additions have been made; a few phrases have been modified; but this is all that has been done in revision, nor did I purpose to do more. If the Essay has any value, it lies chiefly, 1 believe, in the encouragement which it offers to students who desire to examine the records of our Faith with patient and devout trust in the Spirit of Truth. They will know, scarcely less well than I do, where the fulfilment of my plan falls short of the design; but they will know also the certainty of the assurance, which each days work makes stronger, that Holy Scripture opens treasures new and old to men and to Churches, now as in former times, when the scribe becomes a disciple of the kingdom of God. Download or read book Outlines of Introduction to the Hebrew Bible Classic Reprint written by Alfred S. Geden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Introduction to the Hebrew Bible It is not every type of mind that finds attraction in the teaching and thought of the Old Testament; while to some its form is difficult or even repellent. By others, again, the importance of the New Testament is so vividly realised, that the tendency to depreciate by comparison the Old is almost welcomed, and its present interest and significance is made of little account. If, however, half a century ago it was upon the New Testament that attention was concentrated, and upon its genuineness and authority attack was directed by those who desired the overthrow of Christian doctrine and influence, the position is altogether altered to-day. It is the dignity and authority, the credibility and claims of the Old Testament that are debated most keenly, and most confidently called in question. And it is vain for the Christian Church to suppose that she can surrender her heritage in the Old, and yet maintain unimpaired the validity of the doctrines, and the power of the truth which she finds in the New. Upon the former the latter is founded and established; from the New to the Old there lies a constant appeal, as to its Master and authoritative source. And if the New is the crown and completion of the Old, the Old is no less the basis and underwork of. The New. The weakening or destruction of the one involves the ultimate downfall of the other. The two, indeed, are not two; but indissolubly one. The New Testament will share in any discredit cast upon the Old, and will follow it to a fall; while the strength of the Old will be a fresh bulwark and permanent support of the New. There are signs as I cannot but think that the return of the tide has already set in, and that the next quarter of a century will witness a significant rehabilitation of the rights and authority of the books of the Old Testament, as religious and historical records second to none.
