Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Text Book and Atlas of Biblical Geography Of our schools, has no place in our public systems of education. What school or academy, even when proposing a course of study peculiarly select and religious - what system of Public Edu cation - what College or Theological Seminary even, includes in its 'plan of study the Geography and History Of the Bible? How many, accordingly, read the Scriptures daily, and for half a century profess to expound them it may be, without any just conception of the localities and scenery of Bethlehem, of Nazareth, of Capernaum, of Jerusalem, of the Mount of Olives, or of dark Gethsemane - localities and scenes around which cluster the most hallowed associations of the Christian. The following work is the result of an humble effort and an earnest desire to associate together, for reasons which have been briefly indicated, the History and Geography of the Scriptures, and to allure the young and assist them in an interested and intelligent perusal of the Book of God. Whatever may be the consideration in which this text book itself shall be held, we claim that the subject of it undeniably ought to have a place, not only in the Bible-class and Sunday school, but in the primary and grammar school, the college and the theological seminary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Geography of the BibleThe great importance of Bible Geography appears when we consider that the correct understanding of the Sacred Narrative is often dependent upon a knowledge of geographical locations. No geography is so valuable to us as that connected with the Holy Scriptures, and yet I think we are safe in saying that it is the least studied of all geography. When we read of a city, an empire, a moun tain, a plain, a river, or a sea, we naturally form some idea of its location. To form right ideas of such things is an inestimable help to the understanding of the events of the Bible, and to form wrong ideas of geographical locations often leads to error in the interpretation of the Scriptures. The contents of the following pages should not prove tedious nor uninteresting, for every place under consideration is in some way re lated to the history of the chosen people of God, and most of the places are associated directly or indirectly with the walks and works of our Master. The minutest details connected with the sacred narratives of the Bible seem impor tant and alive with interest to those who love and long for truth. The plan of this book is to combine just enough of history with geography to make the latter interesting and profitable The Bible student will find a good wall map of Palestine invaluable as an accompaniment of this volume. The contents of this volume were first pre pared as a text-book in Bible Geography and used by the writer in teaching a class of about eighty young men and women. At the request of many who happened to see those lesson sheets, the course is now given to the public, in this form.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS Biblical Geography And History This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class-Book of Biblical History and Geography This work is a Class-Book of the Old and the New Testaments treated as consecutive history. It includes the Jewish history of the centuries between the close of the Old Testament and the beginning of the New. It presents those important elements of Biblical history which distinguish it from all other histories and which illustrate the plan and the purpose of the Bible as one Book. Whatever modem scholarship has accomplished to aid in the understanding of the original languages of Scripture in important points has been made use of, and whatever monumental or topographic discoveries would contribute to a better understanding of the geography or archaeology of the text-statements have been introduced where the history required it. The history of the centuries between the close of the Old Testament canon and the beginning of the Christian era includes that of its Jewish literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Atlas: A Manual of Biblical Geography and History Especially Prepared for the Use of Teachers and Students of the Bible, and for Sunday School Instruction; Containing Maps, Plans, Review Charts, Colored Diagrams ON this side of the sea we sit down with a big book in our hands. It is an old book. Nearly two thousand years have passed since the last word of it was written, and no one can tell how many thousands of years ago the records were made or the words uttered, out of which its first writer prepared his wonderful statements. This old book is a singular book as to the variety of its contents, - ranging from dry chronological state ment to highest flight of royal poetry. Many pages of it are simply historical, with lists of kings, and names of family lines through many generations. Geographical allusions descending to minutest detail are strewn thickly through its pages. There is no department of natural science which does not find some of its data recognized in the chapters of this venerable volume. Stones and stars, plants and rep tiles, colossal monsters of sea and land, fleet horse, bird of swift flight, lofty cedar and lowly lily, these all find their existence recognized and recorded in that book of various theme. AS it is a long time since these records were made, so are the lands far away in which the events recorded are said to have occurred. We measure the years by millenaries, and by the thousand miles we measure the distance. The greatest contrast exists between the age and land in which we live and the age and lands in which this book found its beginning, its material and its ending. Book A Manual of the Entire Geography of Scripture Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of the Entire Geography of Scripture Classic Reprint written by Henry S. Osborn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of the Entire Geography of Scripture In this work the subject of Biblical geography has. Been carefully reviewed and all previous statements in regard to this subject thoroughly examined. This has been found necessary because in each of four most re ce'ntly published works, either important discoveries have been entirely unnoticed, or the old views and er rors copied and continued in the new work. In two recent publications many errors in direction and dis tance have been made, especially in the Palestine geog raphy although the survey of that region was complet ed and published in 1880. A new edition of Smith's Biblical Dictionary appears with very many errors of the last mentioned class, and these, of long standing, are given a new run in other, but less authoritative, works. In the last edition of The American Sunday School Union's Bible Dictionary, with which Dr. Schafi's name is connected as editor, no mention is made of several important geographic discoveries, such as that of the old Hittite Carchemish, important in both Assyrian and Biblical history, also the discoveries of accad-sepharvaim in Babylonia, Anab in Palestine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Bible Geography Profane history speaks to us to-day with an emphasis made doubly strong by the unearthing of some of the identical sites concerning which its records were made. Nearly two thousand years ago the volcano of Italy buried several splendid cities beneath its rain of death. History made the record, and for centuries their site was lost. Yesterday strong arms went out with spade and pick; today the streets of Pompeii, its forum, suburbs, baths, dwellings, and theaters, its people and their customs, are all before our gaze. Classic art, long buried, is lifted out of her ashy grave, and steps forth from her winding-sheet of fire. So, too, the forum of ancient Rome, the palace of the Caesars, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the Punic and other edifices of Africa, are dug up, and compelled to speak out in attestation of the veracity of those who penned their annals.
