Book The Book of Proverbs Chapters 1 15

Download or read book The Book of Proverbs Chapters 1 15 written by Bruce K. Waltke and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2004-10-14 with total page 748 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over twenty-five years in the making, this much-anticipated commentary promises to be the standard study of Proverbs for years to come. Written by eminent Old Testament scholar Bruce Waltke, this two-volume commentary is unquestionably the most comprehensive work on Proverbs available. Grounded in the new literary criticism that has so strengthened biblical interpretation of late, Waltke's commentary on Proverbs demonstrates the profound, ongoing relevance of this Old Testament book for Christian faith and life. A thorough introduction addresses such issues as text and versions, structure, authorship, and theology. The detailed commentary itself explains and elucidates Proverbs as "theological literature." Waltke's highly readable style -- evident even in his original translation of the Hebrew text -- makes his scholarly work accessible to teachers, pastors, Bible students, and general readers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Book of Proverbs, Vol. 2 It is probable, therefore, that the intended antithesis re lates, not so much to the actual fact of truth saving and falsehood condemning, as to the dispositions and intentions of the faithful witness on the one hand, and the lying wit ness on the other. The faithful witness delights in giving testimony that will save life - that will be salutary and beneficial to his fellow-creatures. The lying witness will, in general, be found actuated by a malevolent and wicked pur pose, having pleasure in giving testimony that will go to condemn the object of his malice. The sentiment will thus be, that truth is most generally found in union with kind ness of heart, and falsehood with malevolence. And this is natural 3 the former being both' good, the latter both evil; falsehood more naturally akin to malice, and truth to love. A deceitful witness is evidently not intended to be under stood of a witness who deceives for the good of others. A man may occasionally deceive for such a purpose 3 but this is the exception, not the rule. The deceitful man de ceives for his own advantage - while the man of truth regards not the results, whether to others or to himself 3 but, be they painful or pleasant, considers only what fidelity and veracity demand of him: not things as he may wish them, but things as they are.* Verse 26. In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence 3 and his children shall have a place of refuge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Proverbs The present General Editor for the Old Testament in the Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges desires to say that, in accordance with the policy of his predecessor the Bishop of Worcester, he does not hold himself responsible for the particular interpretations adopted or for the opinions expressed by the editors of the several Books, nor has he endeavoured to bring them into agreement with one another. It is inevitable that there should be differences of opinion in regard to many questions of criticism and interpretation, and it seems best that these differences should find free expression in different volumes. He has endeavoured to secure, as far as possible, that the general scope and character of the series should be observed, and that views which have a reasonable claim to consideration should not be ignored, but he has felt it best that the final responsibility should, in general, rest with the individual contributors. Book Commentary on the Book of Proverbs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Commentary on the Book of Proverbs Classic Reprint written by Moses Stuart and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Commentary on the Book of Proverbs The history of the present undertaking is brief and simple. After completing my Commentary on Ecclesiastes, I felt specially attracted toward another book, (that of the Proverbs), by reason of its close affinity with Ecclesiastes, in a variety of respects. The gnomic form of much that is in the latter book, naturally produced in my mind, after having spent so much time upon it, an interest in respect to the other book, which is filled with gnomes. A large circle of clerical friends, (many of whom had once been my pupils), who are now moving in extensive spheres of usefulness, and enjoying the approbation of highly respected churches, gave me, early in the summer of the present year, cheering and animating encouragement to proceed in the writing of a Commentary on the Proverbs. My own inclination and choice had already, in a measure, anticipated their friendly request; for when that reached me, I had gone on more than half-way through the book, in the writing of the Commentary. Other friends and brethren, also, have since approved and encouraged the undertaking. A kind Providence has spared my life, when I had little reason to expect its continuance: and from time to time, after repeated partial interruptions of my labors, (during some of which I was led seriously to doubt whether I should ever be able to renew them), I have been enabled to complete what I had begun, if not according to my wishes, yet according to my best ability. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary: The Book of Proverbs There are now before the public many Commentaries, written by British and American divines, of a popular or homiletical character. The Cambridge Bible for Schools, the Handbooks for Bible Classes and Private Students, The Speaker's Commentary, The Popular Commentary (Schaff), The Expositor's Bible, and other similar series, have their special place and importance. But they do not enter into the field of Critical Biblical scholarship occupied by such series of Commentaries as the Kurzgefasstes exegetisches Handbuch zum A. T.; De Wette's Kurzgefasstes exegetisches Handbuch zum N. T.; Meyer's Kritisch-exegetischer Kommentar; Keil and Delitzsch's Biblischer Commentar uber das A. T. Lange's Theologisch-homiletisches Bibelwerk; Nowack's Handkommentar zum A. T.; Holtzmann's Handkommentar zum N. T. Several of these have been translated, edited, and in some cases enlarged and adapted, for the English-speaking public; others are in the process of translation. But no corresponding series by British or American divines has hitherto been produced. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
