Book Bone Dead and Rising

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charles Davidson
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2011-03-28
  • ISBN : 1621892352
  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book Bone Dead and Rising written by Charles Davidson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-03-28 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a vivid, poetic, and evocative story of the painter Vincent van Gogh's struggle to become his true self. The author listens in on Vincent's most intimate, frequently startling thoughts on a host of topics, drawn from three volumes of his correspondence and his 900 extant paintings. What emerges is the portrait of an artist whose spiritual vision was borne of an agonizingly prolonged experience of the "dark night of the soul" through which his art dared to envision the triumph of joy over sorrow, of resurrection over suffering and death. Readers will discover that in many ways Vincent's story is as much about us as about him. Tracing van Gogh's pilgrimage from being an apprentice art dealer to being called to minister, in self-renunciation and misery, among destitute coal miners, the narrative follows his winding, tortuous path into adulthood as he struggles with family, associates, lovers--and with himself. Constantly evidenced in Vincent's own eloquent words and paintings is his tussle with the mysterious presence and maddening absence of God. Vocation unveils as a process of summoning and birthing his own self, through an attempt to imitate Christ, calling forth van Gogh's extraordinary creative powers from deep within. Adding choice supplies from other observers, Davidson here weaves his own exact, artful tapestry of interpretation, producing a suspenseful excursion into the life of van Gogh that offers profound meaning at every turn.

Book excerpt: In 2002, an ancient limestone box called the James Ossuary was trumpeted on the world's front pages as the first material evidence of the existence of Jesus Christ. Today it is exhibit number one in a forgery trial involving millions of dollars worth of high-end, Biblical era relics, some of which literally re-wrote Near Eastern history and which could lead to the incarceration of some very wealthy men and embarrass major international institutions, including the British Museum and Sotheby's. Set in Israel, with its 30,000 archaeological digs crammed with biblical-era artifacts, and full of colorful characters—scholars, evangelicals, detectives, and millionaire collectors—Unholy Business tells the incredibly story of what the Israeli authorities have called "the fraud of the century." It takes readers into the murky world of Holy Land relic dealing, from the back alleys of Jerusalem's Old City to New York's Fifth Avenue, and reveals biblical archaeology as it is pulled apart by religious believers on one side and scientists on the other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book The time is 715 BC. A shiftless Moabite raider: a beautiful Judean prostitute, estranged from her home and her faith; and a fearless Assyrian warrior, obsessed with death; all three are connected and transformed by the resurrecting power of an ancient artifact with a power that transcends understanding. Fast forward to 2025: a despondent father estranged from his life, a wayward mother longing for home, their precocious son and the supernatural discovery he makes in his attic which may have the power to heal them all. Out of a single line of Old-Testament scripture comes an epic story of human conflict, angelic intervention, and a golden thread of hope and healing for the world. About the Author Tara Raczenski is a life-long theater enthusiast. Besides enjoying a variety of on- and off-stage roles, she has written several plays produced regionally including Sleepy Hollow and Treasure Island, for which she won the Forsyth County New Play Initiative award. The drama and passion of the Bible stories really came alive for her as a child with the help of her parents, Richard and Sharon, and the illustrations of the Picture Bible. Those images are with her to this day. She resides in North Carolina with her husband, three children, and three cats. Book Dem Dry Bones

  • Author : Luke A. Powery
  • Publisher : Fortress Press
  • Release : 2012-12-01
  • ISBN : 1451424396

Download or read book Dem Dry Bones written by Luke A. Powery and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age when the so-called prosperity gospel holds sway in many Christian communities or the good news of Christ is reduced to feel-good bromides, it would seem that death has little place in contemporary preaching. Embracing the vision of the valley of dry bones in Ezekiel 37 as a metaphor for preaching in the Spirit, acclaimed homiletician Luke Powery asserts that death is the context for all preaching. In fact, the Spirit leads preachers to the context of death each Sunday in order to proclaim a word of life that ultimately breathes hope into people's lives. Yet many preachers avoid death because they are at a loss of what to say about it and do not realize its vital connection to the substance of Christian hope. As a result the church is too often left with sermons that are fundamentally devoid of hope. Dem Dry Bones aims to remedy some of the theological and homiletical shortcomings in contemporary preaching by looking closely at the African American spirituals tradition. Through this study, Powery demonstrates how to preach in the Spirit so that proclaiming death becomes an avenue toward hope. In short: no death, no hope.
