Download or read book Be Fruitful and Multiply written by Andrew J. Schmutzer and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Andrew J. Schmutzer puts his hand to an in-depth study of the Creation Mandate, known within Reformed theology as the Cultural Mandate. His analysis focuses on key texts of God's blessing in Genesis 1-11. In particular, Schmutzer explores the theological significance of Genesis 1:28 using a biblical-theological approach sensitive to the biblical literature. Delving into such issues as the nature of divine blessing, humankind's royal stewardship, and the role of the image of God, this study draws the reader back to the biblical text as the "lead carriage" for foundational questions in contemporary faith. The result is theological "grist," primed to address the related issues of ecological crisis, social oppression, gender studies, and eco-theology. How one understands the Creation Mandate has serious implications. Be Fruitful and Multiply provides a sharp tool to help address these serious issues.

Download or read book A Prophet Mighty in Deed and Word written by Jeff S. Kennedy and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Jesus, the revolutionary figure who changed the world, struggle to read a scroll? A growing number of scholars think so. Luke’s account of Jesus reading in the synagogue (Luke 4:16–30) is routinely challenged today in academia. The claim is that Luke either fabricated the account outright or relied upon a mistaken social memory of Jesus reading in the synagogue. Accordingly, Jesus has been recast as an illiterate peasant or semi-literate artisan unable to read and teach the way Luke portrays. In A Prophet Mighty in Deed and Word, Jeff Kennedy offers a fresh perspective. He contends that Luke’s “reading Jesus” wasn’t an attempt to appeal to the cultured sensibilities of his Greek audience, who preferred literate philosophers over illiterate carpenters. Instead, it reflects Jesus’ self-understanding as Israel’s prophet-sage, anointed to read and proclaim the year of Yahweh’s favor. Jesus announces a shocking and provocative message for unbelieving Israel, and he does so with a singular authority. This incident sparks escalating tensions between Jesus and his countrymen, resulting in Christ’s glorification through suffering. And Luke tells us that suffering began in Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth.

Download or read book See and Read All These Words written by Chad L. Eggleston and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unusually for the Hebrew Bible, the book of Jeremiah contains a high number of references to writers, writing, and the written word. The book (which was primarily written during the exilic period) demonstrates a key moment in the ongoing integration of writing and the written word into ancient Israelite society. Yet the book does not describe writing in the abstract. Instead, it provides an account of its own textualization, thereby blurring the lines between the texts in the narrative and the texts that constitute the book. Scrolls in Jeremiah become inextricably intertwined with the scroll of Jeremiah. To authenticate the book of Jeremiah as the word of YHWH, its tradents present a theological account of the chain of transmission from the divine to the prophet and then to the scribe and the written page. Indeed, the book of Jeremiah extends the chain of transmission beyond the written word to include the book of Jeremiah itself and, finally, a receiving audience. To make the case for this chain of transmission, See and Read’s three exegetical chapters attend to writers (YHWH, prophets, and scribes), the written word, and the receiving audience. The first exegetical chapter describes the standard chain of transmission from the divine to the prophet to the scribe, demonstrating that all three agents in this chain are imagined as writers and that writing was increasingly understood as a suitable conduit for the divine word. The second exegetical chapter attends to the written word in Jeremiah, especially Jeremiah’s self-references (e.g., “in this book”, “all these words”) as a pivotal element in the extension of the chain of transmission beyond the words in the text to the words of the text. Finally, the third exegetical chapter considers the construction of the audience in the book of Jeremiah, concluding that the written word, as Jeremiah imagines it, is to be received by a worshiping audience through public reading but delivered via textual intermediaries.
Download or read book The Fourfold Gospel Volume 1 written by John DelHousaye and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-08-07 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spirit of Ludolph of Saxony (c. 1295-1378) and Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), The Fourfold Gospel invites the reader into the mystery of God's redemption in Jesus Christ. All the parallel passages in the Gospels are glossed together, along with the unique material, using a medieval interpretive approach called the Quadriga or the acronym PaRDeS in Hebrew. Meditating on the literal, canonical, moral, and theological senses of Scripture offers a scaffolding for the spiritual formation of the reader. This volume, in addition to a thorough introduction to the method and the Gospels, focuses on the beginning of the story--the birth, baptism, and temptations of Christ.
Download or read book Christ Jesus the True Israel written by Brent E. Parker and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-01-11 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the relationship between the nation of Israel, Jesus Christ, and the church? Pastors and theologians come to significantly different conclusions. The reigning systems of evangelical theology, covenant theology, and dispensationalism answer this question by stressing the continuity of the Israel-church relationship (covenant theology) or emphasizing discontinuity (dispensationalism). In more recent times, progressive covenantalism has emerged as a via media between these two theological approaches by providing a different proposal for unpacking the biblical covenants, and by highlighting that to rightly understand the people of God in biblical theology, the person of Jesus Christ must be the focal point. In Christ Jesus, the True Israel, Brent E. Parker presents the case for the importance of typology in this debate, arguing that national Israel is a type, not unlike other Old Testament types (e.g., the sacrificial system, the temple, etc.), that reaches its antitypical fulfillment in Jesus Christ. Moreover, the Israel-church relationship is also typological, but only through Christ. Parker demonstrates that the progressive covenantal approach is a viable system of theology that seeks to preserve what the whole Bible says regarding the people of God, from Israel to Christ and from Christ to the church.

It argues the case that the biblical literature has not been correctly understood or interpreted because its role as religious literature has not been correctly assessed.
