Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental commentary on the book of Revelation, originally published in 1999, has been highly acclaimed by scholars, pastors, students, and others seriously interested in interpreting the Apocalypse for the benefit of the church. Too often Revelation is viewed as a book only about the future. As G. K. Beale shows, however, Revelation is not merely a futurology but a book about how the church should live for the glory of God throughout the ages -- including our own. Engaging important questions concerning the interpretation of Revelation in scholarship today, as well as interacting with the various viewpoints scholars hold on these issues, Beale's work makes a major contribution in the much-debated area of how the Old Testament is used in the Apocalypse. Approaching Revelation in terms of its own historical background and literary character, Beale argues convincingly that John's use of Old Testament allusions -- and the way the Jewish exegetical tradition interpreted these same allusions -- provides the key for unlocking the meaning of Revelation's many obscure metaphors. In the course of Beale's careful verse-by-verse exegesis, which also untangles the logical flow of John's thought as it develops from chapter to chapter, it becomes clear that Revelation's challenging pictures are best understood not by apparent technological and contemporary parallels in the twentieth century but by Old Testament and Jewish parallels from the distant past.

Book excerpt: The Revelation of Jesus the Christ ends by assuring its readers that He is coming “soon” (Rev.22:7). John quotes Jesus’s repeated statement that He will come soon (Rev.1:1; 22:7, 12, 20). Indeed, Jesus did come “soon” to John. Physical life on earth is short for everyone. And the judgments upon first century Jerusalem also came “soon.” But, the text apparently should be read as saying He’s coming “quickly.” It again speaks to the speed of His coming, not the timing of “when.” He comes suddenly. He comes unexpectedly to the unsaved; as unexpected as a sudden heart attack (Mt.24:42-44; 25:13; Lk.12:39). But, He is welcomed by the saved that are always in fellowship with Him and looking forward to their union with Him (Jn.17:24; Heb.9:28; Lk.12:43; 21:27; 1Thes.5:4). John declares: “The Spirit and the bride (Church) say come”; and he promises “whoever wishes” can take the free gift of the water-of-life (Rev.22:17). The Church on earth yearns for the final “wedding feast” (Mt.22:2; 25:10). John again states that God will judge; and he adds a warning about adding or subtracting from the original text of this book, i.e. The Revelation (Rev.22:19). The text within The Revelation then ends with a benediction: “The grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s people. Amen”

Book The Expositor s Bible The Book of Revelation

Download or read book The Expositor s Bible The Book of Revelation written by William Milligan and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Expositor's Bible: The Book of Revelation" is written by William Milligan. In ordinary circumstances, one who undertakes to comment upon a book of the New Testament may be justly expected to make every effort to explain each successive clause and each difficult expression of the book on which he writes. The aim in the following Commentary is rather to catch the general import and object of the Revelation of St. John considered as a whole. The latter purpose indeed cannot be attained unless the commentator has himself paid faithful attention to the former, but it is not necessary that the results of these inquiries should in every case be presented to the English reader. Excerpt: The book is not intended to be a mystery in the sense in which we commonly understand that word. It deals indeed with the future, the details of which must always be dark to us; and it does this by means of figures and symbols and modes of speech far removed from the ordinary simplicity of language which marks the New Testament writers. But it is not on that account designed to be unintelligible. The figures and symbols employed in it are used with perfect regularity; its peculiar modes of speech are supposed to be at least not unfamiliar to the reader, and it is taken for granted that he understands them. The writer obviously expects that his meaning, so far from being obscured by his style, will be thereby illustrated, enforced, and brought home to the mind, with greater than ordinary power. The[Pg 2] word Revelation by which he describes to us the general character of his work is of itself sufficient to show this. "Revelation" means the uncovering of that which has hitherto been covered, the drawing back of a veil which has hung over a person or thing, the laying bare what has been hitherto concealed; and the book before us is a revelation instead of a mystery."
