God loves anew every morning (Lamentations 3:2223). God visits every morning (Job 7:18). God enables us for service every morning (Isaiah 50:4). God promises an eternal morning (Isaiah 21:12). We call these blessings heavenly morning glories. They are like the morning glory flowers (Ipomoea nil) whose heart-shaped leaves remind of Gods love, whose trumpet-shaped flowers give muted sound of Christs return, whose covering vines hint of the reach of Christs forgiving power, and whose unraveling flowers promise newness and color to Gods creation. The Heavenly Morning Glories are part of a treasury of unusual spiritual meditations, some of which include the following: The Banqueting House The Unlived Life Baca Opportunistic Witnessing The Full Quiver Doubting Believers The Language of Tears I Love the Lord, Because . . . Euroclydon These spiritually enriching meditations were born from thirty-five years of the authors pastoral ministry to several churches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the absence of the preacher, Jim the elder was called to visit a woman who had lost her husband. She was desolate and was threatening to commit suicide! Jim was called by a mother of a child who attended the Sunday school. I went with him that morning. As we drove to this home, Jim was at a loss as to what he could do or say. This was something out of his realm of expertise! We had prayed before we left the house, but Jim was anxious! God was putting this woman's life in his hands! I picked up the Bible from the console and said, "Maybe I can find a verse that will help you!" I opened the Bible randomly, and a verse jumped right out at me. I read it to him, "For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour, what you ought to say!" (Luke 12:12, NIV). As we pulled up in front of her house, Jim said, "Mark that page!" We quietly walked into this home. Jim was directed to the woman in need. He talked with her, prayed with her, and read the scriptures of comfort and encouragement. He was with her a long time! When the situation became calm, we took our leave, and the woman who contemplated suicide continued to live. We never heard if she made a place for the Lord in her life, but we knew that He had taken up permanent residence in ours! We felt it! We saw it! We were lifted by His might and encouraged to keep on keeping on. God is real!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his book, Sam shares how God personally and radically intersects a persons life. When God enters our lives, it involves more than just a change in eternal destination, but also a vital transformation of the heart. After God initiates a faith relationship with Himself, He begins to teach us about Himself and how we are to relate to Him through His Word, through His Holy Spirit, and through everyday occurrences in the life of His child. In his book, Sam again and again relates to us how God works in our lives through the inspiration of His Word. Each devotion is about everyday experiences. Each one makes a specific application to Gods Word. The singular purpose of God in the life of His child is to conform us to the image of His Son. He accomplishes this as His Word is applied to our everyday lives. These devotions communicate to us the simplicity along with the profoundness of a loving Father manifesting His life and purposes to His child. Steve Poteat, pastor, Lake Martin Baptist Church

Book Morning Glory

Download or read book Morning Glory written by Linda Dahl and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2012-09-19 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Lou Williams -- pianist, arranger, composer, and probably the most influential woman in the history of jazz -- receives the attention she has long deserved in the definitive biography by a leading scholar of women in jazz. The illegitimate child of an impoverished and indifferent mother, Williams began performing publicly at the age of seven when she became known admiringly in her native Pittsburgh as "the little piano girl of East Liberty," playing one day for the Mellons at bridge teas and the next in gambling dens where the hat was passed for change. She grew up with the jazz of the early part of the century, championed by the likes of Earl Hines and Fats Waller, yet unlike so many other musicians of her time, she was open to new forms in jazz -- she was an early champion of bop, and a mentor and colleague to its central figures, such as Thelonius Monk and Bud Powell -- and in broader musical styles as well (after her conversion to Catholicism, she wrote masses and other sacred music). Most of the other famous women in jazz -- Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald -- have been singers. Williams was instead a phenomenal pianist who performed solo, with small groups and big bands, in vaudeville and clubs, and on numerous records. But she is equally well known today as a composer and arranger of remarkable versatility and power, having worked with, among others, Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman. Her compositions have been recorded by artisits as varied as Marian McPartland, Dizzy Gillespie, Nat "King" Cole, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and herself -- and, more recently, by cutting-edge players Geri Allen and Dave Douglas. But Williams was more than "just a musician"; her interests were catholic in both senses, and she struggled to combine her love of music with her love of God. She was a tireless humanitarian, and made ongoing attempts to help dozens of down-and-out musicians; in the 1950s, her apartment was, at times, virtually a rehab. Though she was often in emotional despair, she found comfort for her many disappointments and hurts not only in her music but in her spirituality. Linda Dahl, granted unprecedented access to the large Williams archive, has given us the whole of Williams's very full life, from her often harrowing days on the road to her tumultuous marriages and love affairs, from the ups and downs of her unique fifty-year career to the remarkable spirituality that came to inform both her daily life and her music. This is a striking protrait of one of our least understood and most important musicians.
