Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bible Legends explores the rich crop of legends that occur in the Old Testament, many of which are the key to the richest literary and artistic traditions of the western world. Real people emerge from these familiar (and not so familiar) stories: Adam's ascent into Heaven in a chariot; Abraham's trial by fire; Jonah's adventure in the whale; Solomon as a beggar; the wooing of Rebekah; the life of Moses; David and Goliath; Cain and Abel. In this fascinating book, Louis Ginzberg presents the Bible's spiritual values in new colours and dimensions. This is storytelling with a grain of salt and a lot of wit. These tales sprang from the ancient oral tradition and changed the daily thoughts and deeds of a hundred generations; here, their power and truth is examined

Book Bible Legends Told in Rhyme

Download or read book Bible Legends Told in Rhyme written by Sebastien Dubois and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you been searching for an easy-to-read version of the Bible? Well this collection of Bible stories, all told in rhyme, may well be just what you have been looking for! Far more than a nursery version of simple bedtime stories, these volumes of the Bibles most classic tales are concisely yet explicitly told to make them impossible to forget. They are written using several different rhyming styles, including limericks, which allow for easy memorisation and provide humour where appropriate. Bible Legends Told in Rhyme also has helpful Bible chapter guides for easy reference. This book spares no fact. So when Daniel gets thrown to the lions, somebody is going to pay! And when King Solomon has a dilemma, he threatens to cut a baby in two in order to teach one mother a lessonall nothing more than the Bible states itself. There is a plethora of Bible books for children out there, but there is nothing as stylish and succinct, using engaging rhyming meter, as this. Many rhyming books try but either fail to include the detail or compromise rhyming flow in order to fit in facts. Limericks are especially difficult to write but are used in this volume to great effect. Leaf through and see for yourself.

Book Temptations and Trials Faced by Bible Legends

Download or read book Temptations and Trials Faced by Bible Legends written by Michael Kotch and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-09-21 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all face temptations and trials in our lives, and how we deal with these times can be defining moments in our lives. So how do we choose the right thing instead of the easiest thing, or the most pleasurable thing? The best way for Christians to successfully respond to temptations and trials in their lives is to start with the Bible. Temptations and Trials Faced by Bible Legends looks at temptations and trials that major characters of the Bible faced, and author and psychologist Michael Kotch shows how these Bible legends tended to fall into one of three categories when faced with a major trial or temptation: either they turned to God for guidance and did whatever God wanted them to do, or they did not follow God, with one group repenting for their disobedience and the other group simply continuing in the wrong direction. In the end, we can learn how doing what is right in God’s eyes can be much different than doing what is “right” in our own, and that the best outcomes follow from consulting with God. God promises that we will never be tempted beyond our abilities, and he will always provide us with a way out of our temptations and trials. And for Christians, when we read the Bible daily, use it to create a plan of action, and always do what is right according to God, we can be confident in God’s leadership as we develop a character in the image of Christ.

Book Stories Folk Tales and Legends From The Bible

Download or read book Stories Folk Tales and Legends From The Bible written by Arthur G Broadhurst and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-04-14 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories, legends and folk tales of the Bible have influenced our literature, our art, our drama, our music, our traditions, our politics, our sense of values and our culture. Familiarity with these stories is important not because they are sacred stories that should be taken as literally true but because they are important culturally to those of us who are the inheritors and beneficiaries of the Judaeo-Christian religious tradition that has made such a significant impact on the culture of the western world. The themes and images in these stories are reflected in the artifacts of our culture-our literature, our art, our music-and we would be aesthetically and intellectually impoverished without a working acquaintance with them. Warning-as in other myths and legends of the ancient world, there is violence, rape, incest and murder in these stories. The target audience is high school and above.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Legends of the New Testament surveys forty of the most commonly misinterpreted passages in the New Testament. For each New Testament text, professor David Croteau describes the popular, incorrect interpretation and then carefully interprets the passage within its literary and historical context. Careful attention is given to sound principles of biblical interpretation to guide readers through the process and reach a more accurate understanding of each text's meaning. QR codes have been inserted at various points throughout the book. By scanning the code with your mobile device, you can view a video of David Croteau addressing a specific urban legend. With examples from the Gospels, Acts, the Epistles, and Revelation, Urban Legends of the New Testament will not only help readers avoid missteps in these forty texts but also provide a model for engaging in correct interpretation of other New Testament passages.

Download or read book From Gods to God written by Avigdor Shinan and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Israelites believed things that the writers of the Bible wanted them to forget: myths and legends from a pre-biblical world that the new monotheist order needed to bury, hide, or reinterpret. Ancient Israel was rich in such literary traditions before the Bible reached the final form that we have today. These traditions were not lost but continued, passed down through the ages. Many managed to reach us in post-biblical sources: rabbinic literature, Jewish Hellenistic writings, the writings of the Dead Sea sect, the Aramaic, Greek, Latin, and other ancient translations of the Bible, and even outside the ancient Jewish world in Christian and Islamic texts. The Bible itself sometimes alludes to these traditions, often in surprising contexts. Written in clear and accessible language, this volume presents thirty such traditions. It voyages behind the veil of the written Bible to reconstruct what was told and retold among the ancient Israelites, even if it is “not what the Bible tells us.”

  • Author : Bart D. Ehrman
  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2009-10-06
  • ISBN : 0061977020

Download or read book Misquoting Jesus written by Bart D. Ehrman and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When world-class biblical scholar Bart Ehrman first began to study the texts of the Bible in their original languages he was startled to discover the multitude of mistakes and intentional alterations that had been made by earlier translators. In Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman tells the story behind the mistakes and changes that ancient scribes made to the New Testament and shows the great impact they had upon the Bible we use today. He frames his account with personal reflections on how his study of the Greek manuscripts made him abandon his once ultraconservative views of the Bible. Since the advent of the printing press and the accurate reproduction of texts, most people have assumed that when they read the New Testament they are reading an exact copy of Jesus's words or Saint Paul's writings. And yet, for almost fifteen hundred years these manuscripts were hand copied by scribes who were deeply influenced by the cultural, theological, and political disputes of their day. Both mistakes and intentional changes abound in the surviving manuscripts, making the original words difficult to reconstruct. For the first time, Ehrman reveals where and why these changes were made and how scholars go about reconstructing the original words of the New Testament as closely as possible. Ehrman makes the provocative case that many of our cherished biblical stories and widely held beliefs concerning the divinity of Jesus, the Trinity, and the divine origins of the Bible itself stem from both intentional and accidental alterations by scribes -- alterations that dramatically affected all subsequent versions of the Bible.
