Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Jewels Natural jewels are so valuable that many of us can never afford to buy them. Nor is this necessary, for we can be happy without them. But these Bible jewels are a thousand times more valuable, and with out them we cannot be happy. Yet, valuable as they are, the poorest person who reads this book, whether young or old, may become the owner of all the Bible jewels of which it speaks. And this is the reason why this book was written. The hope and prayer of the writer is that every one who reads these pages may try to get all these precious Bible jewels. Try first to get Jesus, the Pearl of great price. And when he is yours, ask him to give you all the other jewels here described. They belong to Jesus. He has them to give away. He will give them to all who earnestly ask for them. Ask him to give them to you. Then how rich and happy, how good and useful, you will be! And when Jesus shall come to make up his jewels you will be gathered with them, and will shine in beauty forever among the bright and glori ous things of his heavenly kingdom. The graphic illustrations accompanying this volume were kindly furnished by our gifted young artist, Mr. A. G. Heaton, to whom the author tenders his most cordial thanks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ Is All: The Gospel of the Pentateuch; Genesis But what is the eldest wonder, which steps forth to usher in the train of harmony and grace? It is light. Do you ask what is the chamber of its birth? And what the art, by which it is composed? The reply is, God said, Let there be light: and there was light. To khow more is impossible. And it is impossible, just because more knowledge would neither tend to profit, nor to good. There are, how ever, truths linked with light, which are open to our earnest search. It is a casket rich in Gospel jewels. In its fair form we see the fairer features of the Lord of light. The Holy Spirit - no doubtful guide proclaims, That was the true light, which lighteth every man, which cometh into the world. Jesus, too, exalts it as His emblem, when he instructs, I am the light of the world; he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. The prophet, too, gazing on the rays of Christ, rings, The people that walked in darkness have men a great light. The apostle, intent on Jesus, exhorts, Show forth the praises of Him, who hath called you out of darkness into His marvellous ligh We should close our eyes, then, on the high purposes of light, if we failed to trace therein the transcendent beauties of salvation' s Dayspring. I am sure No merely human mind could bear the strain Of some tremendous sorrows we endure. Art's most ingenious breastworks fail at length, Beat by the mighty billows of the sea; Only the God-formed shores possess the strength To stand before their onslaughts, and not flee. And whence, humanly speak ing, in numerous cases, this distortion of what is noble, and right, and useful, but from the deficiencies just noted in their early education - taught, probably, with anxious solicitude, the doctrines of revelation, but with an obliviousness of the op position, both from within and from without, with which these holy things would one day assuredly be assailed - care fully, perhaps, trained in the obligations of Christianity, but utterly uninstructed in the grounds of those obligations; with scarce any other reason for being a Christian, than for being a Mahometan, an Infidel, or a Jew. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children of the Bible In the houses of kings and nobles, there is commonly a large room called the picture gallery. Among the paintings hung on the walls, are portraits of kings, queens, and other persons who were once famous in the world. When we look at these, we should think what they once were, and whether their lives were pious and useful, or wicked and hurtful. If they were among those who feared God, these pictures may remind us of what we should copy in their conduct. But if they did not live holy lives, then we may learn from them what to shun. Now, the Bible may be compared to the picture gallery of a king, into which we are invited to look. Here are to be seen pictures of the wise, the good, and the great, of the young and the old. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible-Work, Vol. 2 of 2: The New Testament; The Acts, the Epistles, and the Revelation If, from a prophetical text or two, we were able to count on our fingers how many years the world will last, such knowledge would puff up, and lead us to talk and speculate, instead of doing with our might what our hand finds to do. It is not enough that we submit to leave the ages and epochs in the Father's hand, because we can not wrench them out of. It we should be glad and grateful that he spares us such sights into the future as we should not be able to bear. It is the part of a dear child to read eagerly all that the Father reveals, and to trust implicitly wherever the Father indicates a de sign to conceal. Blessed are those servants whom the Lord, when he cometh, shall find - not predict. Ing, but? Watching. In removing the speculative inquiry, he placed a great practical work in their hands. Arnof. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Heroes: Stories From the Bible That no busy mother may say, I cannot take time to gather from the Bible the simple lessons that my children need, this book of little stories - together making one - has been written. I have tried to preserve the pure outlines of the sacred record from the vivid description and the suggestive supposition that are sometimes introduced to add charm to the story, and in all quoted speech I have used the exact words of the author ized version of the Scriptures, so that the earliest impression made upon the memory of the child might be one that should remain. Book The New Version Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Version Classic Reprint written by George Chainey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Version To their unsophisticated minds, this busi ness is seen in a far different light than by ambitious theologians desirous of increasing their income and glory by a place on the translators' staff. Hitherto, they have really believed the Bible from the first verse in Genesis to the last in Revelations. They supposed that God was the author. The idea that he had left the proof-reading to fallible man had never entered their heads. But now every one is familiar with the fact that there are thousands of different read ings that can only be settled by majority vote. They cannot but reflect that, if these men can change it to-day, other men may do so again to - morrow. On finding what were to them some of the sublime passages left out, they. Will naturally ask themselves, If man composed these, why may he not lie the author of it all? The Bible in many a house, regarded in the light of a fetich, will lose much of its sacred character when the revealing light of the new version falls on it. This new version will also set thousands of people to reading the Bible. The reason why many think so much of this book is because they never read it. They have imagined that all the good, true, and beautiful things the ministers find in it are really there. By reading it for themselves, they will discover the deception. I think that, if any one would read the Bible for the purpose of deciding the ques tion of its divinity, they would find a ver dict against it long before reaching the New Testament. The Catholic Church obeys the law of self-preservation by withholding the Bible from the laity. The Pope knows better than to countenance a new version. The friends of humanity can congratulate them selves that Protestantism likes the taste of the poison that will destroy it.
