Book excerpt: The Bible has been written, translated, and interpreted for centuries by men in cultures that were patriarchal. In patriarchy, women are subordinated within the gradations of a hierarchical society. Material on women, therefore has often been misinterpreted or overlooked. In some instances, generic nouns and pronouns in the original languages have been translated into English as masculine words. A careful textual study must be made using all the available tools of biblical scholarship. An accurate understanding of the meaning of words must be sought. Also, readers must try to discern the intentions of the author and try to gain a knowledge of the historical and social background of the biblical material. The demands of God must be distinguished from the demands of a particular culture. The bible as a whole makes it clear that God's people are to bring justice and wholeness to all human beings. the injunctions that degrade women do not provide principles valid for every age of Christianity but instead reflect cultural situations in which men related to women through dominance. The standard for the Christian community today should be the glimmers of female dignity and leadership that shine through the pages of the Bible.

Book Veiling Esther Unveiling Her Story

Download or read book Veiling Esther Unveiling Her Story written by Adam J. Silverstein and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Veiling Esther, Unveiling Her Story: The Reception of a Biblical Book in Islamic Lands examines the ways in which the Biblical Book of Esther was read, understood, and used in Muslim lands, from ancient to modern times. It focuses on case studies covering works from various periods and regions of the Muslim world, including the Qur'an, pre-modern historical chronicles and literary works, the writings of a nineteenth-century Shia feminist, a twentieth-century Iranian encyclopaedia, and others. These case studies demonstrate that Muslim sources contain valuable materials on Esther, which shed light both on the Esther story itself and on the Muslim peoples and cultures that received it. Adam J. Silverstein argues that Muslim sources preserve important pre-Islamic materials on Esther that have not survived elsewhere, some of which offer answers to ancient questions about Esther, such as the meaning of Haman's epithet in the Greek versions of the story, the reason why Mordecai refused to prostrate before Haman, and the literary context of the 'plot of the eunuchs' to kill the Persian king. Throughout the book, Silverstein shows how each author's cultural and religious background influenced his or her understanding and retelling of the Esther story. In particular, he highlights that Persian Muslims (and Jews) were often forced to reconcile or choose between the conflicting historical narratives provided by their religious and cultural heritages respectively.

Book Feminist Theory and the Bible

Download or read book Feminist Theory and the Bible written by Esther Fuchs and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-02-23 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist Theory and the Bible: Interrogating the Sources conceptualizes, contextualizes and maps a new kind of burgeoning scholarship that has grown up in recent decades. This scholarship emerged in the margins of Feminist Studies and Biblical Studies and has yet to find a foothold in either one of these more established contexts. In this book, Esther Fuchs argues that in order to find an enduring, stable place in the academe, this scholarship requires a theoretical perspective. Biblical Studies as a whole has not yet been sufficiently theorized as an academic field, and currently consists of multiple disciplines relying for the most part on traditional scholarly discourses. In this regard, Feminist Biblical Studies is both a departure from and an important supplement to both Feminist Studies and Biblical Studies.

The voices are muted. The shapes and textures are blurred and easily distorted. Can the stories of Old Testament women of faith be reheard and reclaimed in an empowering way by women and men today? With remarkable sensitivity and a keen awareness of his own unavoidable male biases, Jon Berquist casts new light on Eve and Sarah, Lot's wife and Jephthah's daughter, Ruth and Esther, and others. This timely volume serves as a valuable resource for rediscovering the multiple witness of biblical women that has all too often gone unnoticed in the church's faith and life.
