Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All my Living Wellsprings are in you', says God to His people in Psalm 87:7. The title seems apt for the poetic works of the Danish poet-pastor N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872) who wrote over a third of the hymns in the present Danish Hymnbook as poet, adaptor, or translator. Living Wellsprings contains a wide selection of Grundtvig's best-known hymns and songs along with a number of his shorter poems - 162 items in all - in new translations. This is the first comprehensive collection of the poetry of one of the pre-eminent builders of the Danish nation, who regarded Danish history, language, and song as absolutely indispensable to the life of what he termed 'the state, the church, and the school'. As part of its agenda to digitalise and translate Grundtvig's vast output, the Grundtvig Study Centre at Aarhus University is pleased to publish this second volume in the series, 'N.F.S. Grundtvig: Works in English'. Volume 1, The School for Life, contains Grundtvig's major writings on education. Future volumes will deal with his philosophy, his politics, and his theology.

Book The Conversion of Europe TEXT ONLY

Download or read book The Conversion of Europe TEXT ONLY written by Richard Fletcher and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 1917 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of how Europe was converted to Christianity from 300AD until the barbarian Lithuanians finally capitulated at the astonishingly late date of 1386. It is an epic tale from one of the most gifted historians of today. This remarkable book examines the conversion of Europe to the Christian faith in the period following the collapse of the Roman Empire to approximately 1300 when the hegemony of the Holy Roman Empire was firmly established. One of the book’s great strengths is the degree to which it shows how little was inevitable about this process, how surrounded by uncertainties. What was the origin of the missionary impulse? Who were the activists who engaged in this work – the toilsome, often unrewarding, sometimes dangerous work of evangelisation, and how did they set about putting over this faith? How did a structure of ecclesiastical government come into being? Above all, at what point can one say that an individual or a society has become Christian? Fletcher’s range, lucidity and mastery of his sources brings the answers to these and many other questions as far within our grasp as they probably ever can be. Like Alan Bullock and Simon Schama, Fletcher is a historian with the true gift of a storyteller and a wide general readership ahead of him. Fletcher’s previous book, The Quest for El Cid won both the Wolfson History Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Award for History. This book is even better – the most impressive achievement so far of this strikingly gifted historian.

Book Life Story of Rasmus B Anderson

Book excerpt: Rasmus Anderson (1846-1936), the American author, scholar, editor, businessman and diplomat, intertwines his life story with the cultural and institutional history of the Norwegian-American community as a whole. There are eyewitness accounts of tension within American factions and branches of the Lutheran church over such issues as slavery and public education as well as anecdotes about Ole Bull, Knut Hamsun, Björnstjerne Björnson, Robert La Follette, James G. Blaine and various European monarchs and heads of state. Anderson began his life on a farm in Albion, Dane County, Wisconsin. After many efforts to finance and obtain the kind of education he wanted, he pioneered the study and teaching of Scandinavian languages at the University of Wisconsin (1869-1883). Between 1885 and 1889, he served as U.S. minister to Denmark. He eventually prospered as president of the Wisconsin Life Insurance Co., from 1895-1922. In 1874, Anderson attracted widespread attention with his America Not Discovered By Columbus. He is remembered for his studies, translations, and retellings of Norse mythology. The more active and public aspects of his life are emphasized in this work.
