Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By thermally cycling through their transformation temperature range, coarse-grained, polymorphic materials can be deformed superplastically, owing to the emergence of transformation mismatch plasticity (or transformation superplasticity) as a deformation mechanism. This mechanism is investigated under biaxial stress conditions during thermal cycling of unalloyed titanium, Ti-6Al-4V, and their composites (Ti/10 vol.% TiC{sub p}, Ti-6Al-4V/10 vol% TiC{sub p} and Ti-6Al-4V/5 vol.% TiB{sub w}). During gas-pressure dome bulging experiments, the dome height was measured as a function of forming time. Adapting existing models of biaxial doming to the case of transformation superplasticity where the strain-rate sensitivity is unity, we verify the operation of this deformation mechanism in all experimental materials, and compare the biaxial results to uniaxial thermal cycling results on the same materials. Finally, existing thickness distribution models are compared with experimentally measured profiles.

Book Mechanisms and Mechanics of Transformation mismatch Plasticity in Titanium Alloys and Composites

Download or read book Mechanisms and Mechanics of Transformation mismatch Plasticity in Titanium Alloys and Composites written by Christopher Schuh and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformation-mismatch plasticity is a deformation mechanism that occurs in polymorphic materials when a small external stress is imposed during their phase transformation. Internal mismatch, due to the density difference between polymorphs, is accommodated plastically in the weaker phase, and the accommodation strains are biased to occur in the direction of the external stress. This leads to average Newtonian flow, which can be accumulated after multiple transformations to achieve superplastic strains (i.e., transformation superplasticity).

Book Micromechanics of Transformation Superplasticity in Ti 6Al 4V TiBw Composites

Download or read book Micromechanics of Transformation Superplasticity in Ti 6Al 4V TiBw Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformation superplasticity is a deformation mechanism induced by thermally-cycling a polymorphic material through the phase transformation range while simultaneously applying an external biasing stress. Unlike microstructural superplasticity, which requires a fine, equiaxed grain structure, this mechanism can be applied to coarse-grained alloys and composites. In this article, we review our research on transformation superplasticity of Ti-6Al-4V/TiB-whisker reinforced composites, during thermal cycling through the titanium [alpha]/[beta] transformation range. The composites exhibit Newtonian flow and superplastic extension under these conditions. We describe the constitutive behavior of composites containing 0, 5 and 10 vol% reinforcing whiskers, and consider the effects of load transfer from matrix to whisker on superplastic deformation using existing rheological models. Additionally, strain hardening due to gradual whisker alignment is observed, and rationalized in terms of increased load transfer for aligned whiskers.

Book Superplastic Forming Diffusion Bonding Technology of Titanium Alloys

Download or read book Superplastic Forming Diffusion Bonding Technology of Titanium Alloys written by Zhiqiang Li and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-26 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive illustration to the superplastic forming/diffusion bonding (SPF/DB) technology developed over decades of research on titanium alloys, process modeling, and its application. SPF/DB technology plays key roles in building aviation components with complicated structures, with highly beneficial effects when well designed. With the ever-increasing demand on components with multiple layers, there is an urgent need for an updated assessment of traditional and modern SPF/DB processing methods. Success critically depends on making the most practical and effective choice of SPF/DB method for a given application. The book introduces titanium and titanium alloys, SPF/DB processing and its modeling, and applications for building typical single or multiple layer(s) structures. Particular attention is paid to illustrating the microstructure evolution during SPF/DB processes. The information for making technical decisions about optimal choice of measurement and evaluation methods is also given in the book. Each chapter follows a focused and pragmatic format. Fully illustrated throughout, the book presents the state of the art in SPF/DB technology in a manner that makes it useful for engineers to improve the established forming processes and quality of components. This book is an essential reading material for industrial practitioners, academic researchers and postgraduates.

Book Transformation Superplasticity of Intermetallic and Ceramic Matrix Composites

Download or read book Transformation Superplasticity of Intermetallic and Ceramic Matrix Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transformation superplasticity - defined as the capability of allotropic materials to deform rapidly and without fracture upon thermal cycling between their two phases - has been studied in a series of monolithic and composite materials systems: metals (Fe, Ti and Zr), metal matrix composites (Ti6Al4V-TiC, Ti6Al4V-TiB and Fe-TiC), intermetallic matrix composites (NiAl-ZrO2), ceramics (Bi2O3) and ceramic matrix composites (zirconia-based system). Often, samples were fabricated in house by powder processes and in all cases their microstructure was characterized before and after deformation. Tensile experiments demonstrated that samples deform more rapidly and to higher fracture strains when thermally cycled around their phase transformation than when held at a constant equivalent temperature. Furthermore, theoretical modeling was performed using both analytical closed- form solution methods and finite-element numerical methods, and good agreement with experimental data was obtained. Major transformation superplasticity milestones include: first complete study of zirconium, first demonstration in intermetallic systems (titanium aluminide and nickel aluminide), first demonstration in ceramic systems (bismuth oxide and zirconia), first numerical model (finite-element), new continuum model (at high stresses), first demonstration of whisker alignment (in Ti-6Al4V/TiB), first use of hydrogen (in Ti). Also, our collaboration with industry has resulted in a completed Phase I SBIR project as well as a subsequent Phase II project initiated in 2000 with NSF sponsorship, an important step towards commercialization of transformation superplasticity.

Book Biaxial Properties of Titanium Alloys at Cryogenic Temperatures

Download or read book Biaxial Properties of Titanium Alloys at Cryogenic Temperatures written by DL. Corn and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biaxial properties of Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-5Al-2.5Sn were determined at -423 F. Texture strengthening was found to be operative at this temperature, but the magnitude of the increase in strength over uniaxial properties could not be predicted from tension-test techniques for measuring texture strengthening. The strengths of welded joints in Ti-6Al-4V at -423 F were found to be equal to that of the textured parent metal. The dependence of texture strengthening on temperature, strain, and stress state is discussed.
