Download or read book Regulatory Peptides written by J.M. Polak and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. M. Polak and S. R. Bloom For some time Experientia has published, as a unique feature, interdis ciplinary multi-author reviews, giving a comprehensive overview of sub jects regarded as 'growing edges' of science. The enthusiasm shown by the readers was contagious and thus it was felt necessary to compile a special volume dealing with the novel aspects of regulatory peptides. This book covers some of the growing areas in regulatory peptide research and, although it is based on the original volume of Experientia, it is expanded and updated. The topic of 'regulatory peptides' is relatively young and has grown at an unprecedented pace, from the embryonic conception of 'gut hor mones' or 'brain neuropeptides' some 15 years ago to the realisation that these active pep tides are found, almost without exception, in every part of l8 23 the body in all vertebrate and many invertebrate species • Why the term 'regulatory peptides'? It represents a convenient label encompassing both the active peptides present in nerves, which are re leased as (putative) neurotransmitters, and those in endocrine cells, which act locally or at a distance as circulating hormones, these being the l8 main components of the so-called diffuse neuroendocrine or APUD 17 system • Morphological studies support this physiological viewpoint.

Download or read book The Behavioral Neuroscience of the Septal Region written by Robert Numan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of our understanding of this area of the brain, showing how it fits into the general picture of those areas concerned with modulating mammalian behavior. The chapters, all written by leading figures in behavioral neuroscience, discuss the anatomy, neurochemistry, physiology, and behavioral relations in the septal area. Due to the great deal of current research shown in the related areas of hippocampus and the amygdala, this book will be of great interest to all those who research the hippocampus and the amygdala in addition to the septum itself.

Download or read book Behavioral Neurogenetics written by John F. Cryan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers a wide array of topics relevant to behavioral genetics from both a preclinical and clinical standpoint. Indeed in juxtaposing both areas of research the reader will appreciate the true translational nature of the field. Topics covered range from technical advances in genetic analysis in humans and animals to specific descriptions of advances in schizophrenia, attention disorders, depression and anxiety disorders, autism, aggression, neurodegeneration and neurodevelopmental disorders. The importance of gene-environment interactions is emphasised and the role of neuroimaging in unravelling the functional consequences of genetic variability described. This volume will be valued by both the basic scientist and clinician alike who may use it as a detailed reference book. It will also be of use to the novice to the field, to whom it will serve as an in-depth introduction to this exciting area of research.

This book was released on 2009-10-12 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As technology has made imaging of the brain noninvasive and inexpensive, nearly every psychologist in every subfield is using pictures of the brain to show biological connections to feelings and behavior. Handbook of Neuroscience for the Behavioral Sciences, Volume I provides psychologists and other behavioral scientists with a solid foundation in the increasingly critical field of neuroscience. Current and accessible, this volume provides the information they need to understand the new biological bases, research tools, and implications of brain and gene research as it relates to psychology.
Download or read book Gap Junctions in the Brain written by Ekrem Dere and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-08-30 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to chemical links across synapses, neurons can also form direct connections via electrical gap junctions. These channels play a key role in brain development and intercellular communication. Dere (pathophysiology of cerebral aging, U. Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris; AP-HP Hôpital Charles Foix, Centre de Recherche et Développement, Ivry-sur-Seine, France) introduces types of gap junctions, their structural aspects, expression patterns of connexins (transmembrane proteins), and gap junction-related diseases due to mutations in connexin genes. International researchers working in this emerging field discuss specific connexin genes and their mechanisms of action and function in the developing neocortx, behavior, and neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases. The text includes color and b&w illustrations including schematic representations and models. Academic Press is an imprint of Elsevier. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
Download or read book Behavioral Neurobiology of Alcohol Addiction written by Wolfgang Sommer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-07-28 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question how alcohol alters mood states and why this may end up becoming an addiction is puzzling alcohol researchers since decades. In this volume, an assembly of highly distinguished experts and leaders in alcohol addiction research provides lucid presentations of the current knowledge and research challenges as well as interesting viewpoints on future research directions aimed to stimulate communication and convergence between clinical and preclinical researchers, and to renew interest in the vibrant field of alcohol addiction research among a wide scientifically minded audience. Five Current Topics are discussed in this volume: Neurobiological mechanisms of alcoholism, Genetics, Clinical phenotypes and their preclinical models, Brain imaging, and Translational approaches for treatment development, both pharmacological and non-pharmacological. These areas have in our opinion brought alcohol research substantially forward and influenced our thinking about how to reach our common paramount goal, namely to offer effective treatment solutions for an extensive group of patients with largely unmet medical needs.

Download or read book Cortico Hippocampal Interplay and the Representation of Contexts in the Brain written by Robert Miller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1. 1 Contexts The principal issue with which this monograph deals is the role of the hippocam pus in establishing and using representations of contexts for information processing. However, before this issue can be addressed directly, it is necessary to ask "what is meant by the word 'context' ?". The first answer which comes to mind is likely to be something along the following lines: "A context is a framework (or background) of information with respect to whieh more specific 'items' ofinformation can be identified and manipulated". This answer may be correct, but it begs a fundamental question. Why should it be necessary to subdivide information into specific "items" of information, and the more global backgrounds, or frameworks? This question is especially pertinent if we are thinking of information representation in the brain, since neuroscientists (or at least the vast majority of them) believe that the basic way in whieh patterns of information are encoded in the brain is as combinations of connections, selected in a variety of ways. Since both "items" of information and "contexts" are just such patterns, apparently differing only in size, it is far from clear why there should be a categorical division between the two. ! This question is relatively new in the neurosciences. However, in a somewhat different guise it has been alive for a long time, since the publication ofImmanuel Kant's Critique 01 Pure Reason.
