Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly capable twin-engined destroyer, fighter-bomber, and night fighter, the Messerschmitt Bf 110 (unofficially the Me 110) was, in Hermann Göring’s estimation, the pick of the Luftwaffe’s offensive fighters. Drawing on the personal recollections of pilots and aircrew, as well as the individual histories of principal units and non-Luftwaffe operators, 'The Messerschmitt Bf 110 Story' charts the aircraft’s operational service in Poland, the Battle of Britain, North Africa, and the Eastern Front. It offers deep technical analysis on the aircraft’s design and performance alongside competitors, such as the Focke-Wulf Fw 57 and Henschel Hs 124, and opponents, like the French Potez 630/631 series and Polish PZL.38. The few Bf 110s that have survived in preservation are also explored in this comprehensive operational and technical account of the Luftwaffe’s famous Zerstörer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the first of its type to be devoted exclusively to the Zerstörer day fighter aces, spanning the war years from Poland to the defence of the Reich. Although Messerschmitt's single-engined Bf 109 has received most of the plaudits for achieving virtual air superiority over Europe in 1939-40, the exploits of the manufacturer's twin-engined Bf 110, the Ju 88 and the Me 410 Zerstörer in the first year of the war also make for very impressive reading. Indeed, on the eve of World War 2 a posting to a Bf 110 unit was considered to be the best career move available in the Luftwaffe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Messerschmitt Bf 110, was designed in the middle of the thirties. After a relatively convincing start in Poland in September 1939, the performance of the Zerstörer (destroyer) units, declined rapidly with heavy losses, so much so that at the end of the Battle of Britain it was decided to withdraw the Bf 110s from service and cease production. After the failure of its designated successor, the Me 210, the Bf 110 started a second career which was indeed infinitely more glorious since it scored more kills not only than any other Luftwaffe night-fighter but also more than all the aircraft of this type in all the air forces fighting in World War Two…

Download or read book Aces of the Luftwaffe written by Peter Jacobs and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of Nazi Germany’s air force along with details of some of its most successful pilots. World War II’s air battles were fought ferociously and with extraordinary skill and courage on both fronts. The fighter pilots of Luftwaffe, the jagdflieger, in fact outscored their Allied counterparts by some margin and were some of the highest scoring fighter pilots of all time. More than a hundred recorded a century of aerial successes with two going on to surpass an astonishing 300 victories. In the end, the vast effort required by the Luftwaffe to maintain the air war on so many fronts proved too much. Few jagdflieger survived the last days of the Reich. But their ability was beyond question, and the names of some will live on in the annals of air warfare with their extraordinary achievements never to be surpassed. In Aces of the Luftwaffe, Peter Jacobs examines the many campaigns fought by the Luftwaffe, from its fledgling days during the Spanish Civil War to its last days defending the Reich, and recounts the exploits of Erich Hartmann, the highest scoring fighter pilot of all time; Hans-Joachim Marseille, the Star of Africa; Werner Mölders, the first recipient of the Diamonds; and Adolf Galland, perhaps the most famous of all.

Book Messerschmitt Bf 110

Download or read book Messerschmitt Bf 110 written by Terry C. Treadwell and published by Cerberus Publishing. This book was released on 2005-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the fundamental aviation debates, during the 1930s, concerned the need for an aircraft that could provide a long-range escort. Governments and manufacturers believed that the next war would be largely conducted in the air with heavy bombers flying over enemy territory. They would release bombs that would destroy land forces and strategic sites before an invading army had the chance to mobilize. It was generally assumed that this long-range escort would be a twin-engined, two-seater aircraft that would accompany the bombers and protect them from interceptions. With the exception of Britain most countries equipped themselves with such machines. The Luftwaffe was among the first with this type of aircraft, which they called the Zerstoerer (destroyer), as the Bavarian aircraft manufacturer, later to become Messerschmitt, had developed a prototype Bf 110 that first flew on May 12th, 1936. Although under-powered, with two 730hp Jumo 210Ga engines, the first production version was supplied in July 1938. Despite this initial lack of engine power the heavily armed Bf 110 proved to be the progenitor of an outstanding warplane. The inability to dogfight in combat with highly maneuverable fighter aircraft put the Bf 110 at a grave disadvantage and although it was used in most theatres of German operations it rarely appeared over Britain after September 1940. However, the Messerschmitt Bf 110 came into its own when, equipped with radar, it became the supreme night-fighter aircraft and the preferred ‘mount’ of pilots such as Lent, Schnaufer and Wittgenstein.

Book Me 210 410 Zerst rer Units

Download or read book Me 210 410 Zerst rer Units written by Robert Forsyth and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended as a progressive development of the twin-engined Bf 110 Zerstörer ('destroyer' or heavy fighter), the Me 210 first took to the air in September 1939. However, due to a lack of sufficient flight-testing before being declared service-ready, the Me 210 suffered from a less than satisfactory reputation in respect to its flight characteristics and weak undercarriage. After enhancements were made to the fuselage and wings, and the power of the plane was increased, the Me 210 became the Me 410 in late 1942. By this stage of the war much was expected of the two types, which were forced to fly in very dangerous skies over North Africa and in the defence of the German homeland. Both aircraft were deployed as heavy fighters, fighter-bombers, reconnaissance platforms and interceptors, seeing service with a number of different units. The Me 410 was fitted with 30 mm cannon, 21 cm underwing mortars and the colossal 5 cm BK cannon that was intended to pack a punch against the USAAF's four-engined bombers which threatened the Reich in large numbers from 1943 onwards. In this title, supported by contemporary photography and full-colour artwork, Robert Forsyth tells the complex story of the Me 210 and 410, detailing their development and assessing their capabilities as combat aircraft.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A thorough look at this turning-point WWII aerial battle, with eyewitness accounts, maps, and rare photos: “incredibly well-researched” (Aircrew Book Review). By late summer 1940, Nazi Germany had conquered all its opponents on the continent, including the British Army itself, which was forced to scramble back aboard small boats to its shores. A non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union in hand, Hitler had only one remaining object that season—the British Isles themselves. However, before he could invade, his Luftwaffe needed to wipe the Royal Air Force from the skies. History’s first strategic military campaign conducted in the air alone was about to take place. This book contains a large number of dramatic eyewitness accounts, even as it reveals new facts that will alter common perceptions of the battle. For example, the twin-engined Messerschmitt Bf 110 was actually a good day fighter, and it performed at least as well in this role as the Bf 109 during the battle. The Luftwaffe’s commander, Hermann Göring, performed far better than has been believed. The British night bombers played a more decisive role than previously thought; in addition, this book disproves that the German 109 pilots were in any way superior to their Hurricane or Spitfire counterparts. The author has examined records from both sides and provides surprising statistics that shatter much conventional wisdom—laying out the Battle of Britain as seldom seen before. Includes color photos of the relevant aircraft.

Book excerpt: Royal Air Force Fighter Command's brief was to provide an effective aerial barrier to any attempt at domination of British skies. The aircraft and technical resources on hand between 1936 and WWII's initiation were thankfully improved to a level that was barely sufficient to withstand the hitherto unchallengeable Luftwaffe's advance across Western Europe. Between 1940 and 1942 the Command generally found itself on the back-foot in terms of overall success. The introduction of aircraft designs that would change the situation, however costly, in its ultimate favour, featured prominently from the mid-point of WWII. The Luftwaffe found itself being challenged and regularly bested 'round the clock'; by the advent of D-Day the Command's efforts had materially contributed to the Allied on-surge that had placed its adversary on a permanent downward spiral towards total extinction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The RAF introduced the Avro Lancaster in 1942 and used it to spearhead this aerial offensive. In response, the Luftwaffe created an elite nightfighter force based primarily upon the Bf 110. The Luftwaffe was quick to equip it with airborne radar that allowed it to intercept and destroy Lancasters over Germany. In turn, the RAF adopted countermeasures such as the Monica rearward-looking radar to alert Lancaster crews to the approach of nightfighters. In May 1943 the Luftwaffe suddenly developed a novel technical and tactical approach to attacking RAF bombers. The new tactic proved amazingly successful, and British bombers could be attacked from below with no warning. For its part, the RAF failed to detect the new German tactic for six crucial months, during which time its Lancaster bombers were almost defenceless against this new threat. In time, however, the German advantage of surprise was lost and the RAF developed countermeasures to deal with the new threat. The duel between upgraded Bf 110s and Lancasters in the night skies over Germany became increasingly dominated by cutting-edge technology, which would determine the efficacy of strategic bombing.

Flying hopelessly outmoded P.11 fighters in defence of their country in September 1939, a handful of aviators inflicted serious losses on the Luftwaffe before being overwhelmed. The survivors escaped to then neutral Hungary and Romania, before being ordered to France by the new C-in-C of exiled Polish Armed Forces, General Sikorski. With the invasion of Western Europe in May 1940, the surviving pilots were once more thrust into desperate action in newly-formed Polish units

Download or read book Bf 109 F G K Aces of the Western Front written by John Weal and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-20 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The follow--on volume to Osprey Aircraft of the Aces 11 Bf 109D/E Aces 1939-41, this book charts the story of the myriad aces who flew the later marks of Messerschmitt fighter through to VE-Day. As good as the Emil had been during the opening 18 months of the war, the aircraft was being progressively bettered in virtually all aspects of aerial combat by the Spitfire come 1941, so Messerschmitt updated and improved the breed, firstly with the introduction of the Friedrich and then the multi-variant Gustav.
