Book Middle English Word Studies

Download or read book Middle English Word Studies written by Louise Sylvester and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2000 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bibliography of studies of individual Middle English words and groups of words offering evidence for word meanings. Although detailed and full bibliographies exist for Old English word studies, this is the first specifically on Middle English lexicography, focussing on studies of individual Middle English words and groups of words which offer evidence for word meanings: ante- and post-datings for the Oxford English Dictionary and the Middle English Dictionary, missing entries and ghost words, possible proverbs, proposals for etymologies, wordplay, punning, new readingsin manuscripts and the reinterpretations of textual cruces. It first presents an annotated bibliography arranged alphabetically by author's name and date of publication; the annotations include notes on the contents and approach of each article, cross-references to related work, and references to reviews. Two indexes follow, the Index of Words, an alphabetical listing of words that have attracted significant discussion with references to the author(s), publication date and notes of pages on which the words are discussed; and an Index of Authors. The introductory section offers critical analyses of the word studies. Professor JANE ROBERTS and Dr LOUISE SYLVESTER teach atKing's College London.

Book The Latin Sexual Vocabulary

Download or read book The Latin Sexual Vocabulary written by J. N. Adams and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1990-10 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LIke other languages, Latin contained certain words its speakers considered obscene as well as a rich stock of sexual euphemism and metaphor. Our sources for this information range from surviving graffiti to literary works with a marked sexual content. Yet despite its manifest literary and linguistic interest, the sexual vocabulary of Latin has remained uninvestigated by scholars. J. A. Adams's pioneering and unique reference work collects for the first time evidence of Latin obscenities and sexual euphemisms drawn from both literary and nonliterary sources from the early Republic to about he fouth century A.D. Separate chaptes treat each of the sexual pasrts of the body and the terminology used to describe sexual acts. General topics include the influence of Greek language on Latin, changes in the Latin vocabulary over time (including the evolution of sexual words into general terms of abuse), and lexical differences among various literary genres.

Book Grey in Old English

Download or read book Grey in Old English written by Carole Patricia Biggam and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study comprises a colour semantic investigation into the greyness of Old English, forming a companion volume to the author's Blue in Old English (1997). The research is conducted by means of word-studies of graeg, har, hsau, and wylfen, and their context. The investigation makes use of etymology, literary studies, sociolinguistics, zoology, botany and ornithology, giving Anglo-Saxon' subtle use of grey to inspire a sense of the richly varied Anglo-Saxon world of frost, iron, ancient trees, stalking wolves, and hoary-headed saints and warriors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of color categorization has always been intrinsically multi- and inter-disciplinary, since its beginnings in the nineteenth century. The main contribution of this book is to foster a new level of integration among different approaches to the anthropological study of color. The editors have put great effort into bringing together research from anthropology, linguistics, psychology, semiotics, and a variety of other fields, by promoting the exploration of the different but interacting and complementary ways in which these various perspectives model the domain of color experience. By so doing, they significantly promote the emergence of a coherent field of the anthropology of color. As of February 2018, this e-book is freely available, thanks to the support of libraries working with Knowledge Unlatched.

Book Sexual Practices and the Medieval Church

Download or read book Sexual Practices and the Medieval Church written by Vern L. Bullough and published by New Concepts in Sexuality. This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sexual Practices and the Medieval Church" analyses the Christian assumptions about sexuality, chronicles the early institutionalisation of these assumptions, and explores the theological debate of the meaning of marriage and the role of sex in marriage. The theological conception of sex, including issues such as rape, seduction, impotence, and prostitution, is then examined as it came to be developed by canon lawyers and justified by medical and scientific writers. The book concludes with an overview of late medieval sex practices as seen in the literature of the period and in demographic studies.Professor Vern Bullough, the well-known researcher in human sexuality, and Professor James Brundage, a historian of the Medieval period, have combined their scholarly talents to develop an in-depth analysis of sexual attitudes and practices during the Middle Ages. Skilfully blending readability and scholarly thoroughness, this is a volume general readers as well as professionals recognise as a major contribution to the study of medieval sexuality.

Book Ethnobiological Classification

Download or read book Ethnobiological Classification written by Brent Berlin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A founder of and leading thinker in the field of modern ethnobiology looks at the widespread regularities in the classification and naming of plants and animals among peoples of traditional, nonliterate societies--regularities that persist across local environments, cultures, societies, and languages. Brent Berlin maintains that these patterns can best be explained by the similarity of human beings' largely unconscious appreciation of the natural affinities among groupings of plants and animals: people recognize and name a grouping of organisms quite independently of its actual or potential usefulness or symbolic significance in human society. Berlin's claims challenge those anthropologists who see reality as a "set of culturally constructed, often unique and idiosyncratic images, little constrained by the parameters of an outside world." Part One of this wide-ranging work focuses primarily on the structure of ethnobiological classification inferred from an analysis of descriptions of individual systems. Part Two focuses on the underlying processes involved in the functioning and evolution of ethnobiological systems in general. Originally published in 1992.
