Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the science of stream restoration, Rebecca Lave argues that the neoliberal emphasis on the privatization and commercialization of knowledge has fundamentally changed the way that science is funded, organized, and viewed in the United States. Stream restoration science and practice is in a startling state. The most widely respected expert in the field, Dave Rosgen, is a private consultant with relatively little formal scientific training. Since the mid-1990s, many academic and federal agency-based scientists have denounced Rosgen as a charlatan and a hack. Despite this, Rosgen's Natural Channel Design approach, classification system, and short-course series are not only accepted but are viewed as more legitimate than academically produced knowledge and training. Rosgen's methods are now promoted by federal agencies including the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, as well as by resource agencies in dozens of states. Drawing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Lave demonstrates that the primary cause of Rosgen's success is neither the method nor the man but is instead the assignment of a new legitimacy to scientific claims developed outside the academy, concurrent with academic scientists' decreasing ability to defend their turf. What is at stake in the Rosgen wars, argues Lave, is not just the ecological health of our rivers and streams but the very future of environmental science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Island in the Stream introduces an original genre of ethnographic history as it follows a community on Mayotte, an East African island in the Mozambique Channel, through eleven periods of fieldwork between 1975 and 2015. Over this 40-year span Mayotte shifted from a declining and neglected colonial backwater to a full département of the French state. In a highly unusual postcolonial trajectory, citizens of Mayotte demanded this incorporation within France rather than joining the independent republic of the Comoros. The Malagasy-speaking Muslim villagers Michael Lambek encountered in 1975 practiced subsistence cultivation and lived without roads, schools, electricity, or running water; today they are educated citizens of the EU who travel regularly to metropolitan France and beyond. Offering a series of ethnographic slices of life across time, Island in the Stream highlights community members' ethical engagement in their own history as they looked to the future, acknowledged the past, and engaged and transformed local forms of sociality, exchange, and ritual performance. This is a unique account of the changing horizons and historical consciousness of an African community and an intimate portrait of the inhabitants and their concerns, as well as a glimpse into the changing perspective of the ethnographer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hunters in the Stream, Riley Fitzhugh goes through officer training and is assigned to PC 475, a new anti-U-boat vessel stationed in Key West. The 475 is nicknamed Nameless by her crew because patrol craft vessels were only given numbers. Nameless cruises the Gulf of Mexico in search of U-boats, goes to the rescue of a sinking oil tanker, stops in Havana for meetings with the Cuban Navy, and learns of a possible secret German U-boat fueling station in the wilds of eastern Cuba. Nameless locates the base and destroys it with the ship’s gunfire and a coordinated small-arms attack led by Fitzhugh and his shore party. Later, another U-boat is reported damaged and sinking. The German survivors capture a Bahamian turtle boat, murder the crew, and head for Cuba, thinking that the fuel dump is still in operation. Fitzhugh and the Nameless pursue through the tangle of mangroves and Cuban keys, find the Germans, and finish them off in a shootout. Along the way, Fitzhugh meets Ernest Hemingway and toward the end tells him about the Nameless’s adventures. Hemingway thinks about adapting the story for his own. Fitzhugh and Hemingway’s wife, writer Martha Gellhorn, also meet and feel some mutual stirrings—and give in to them.

Book Promoting Healthy and Supportive Acoustic Environments Going beyond the Quietness

Download or read book Promoting Healthy and Supportive Acoustic Environments Going beyond the Quietness written by Francesco Aletta and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-04 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers 14 original contributions published in an IJERPH Special Issue that deal with the perception of environmental sounds and how such sounds are likely to affect human quality of life and well-being and the experience of a place. The research focus over the years has been gradually shifting from treating sound simply as “noise” and something that cities should get rid of to a potential “resource” to promote and support community life in public spaces. Three main topics or “needs” to be addressed by researchers and practitioners emerged from this Special Issue: (1) the need to re-think “quietness” in cities as something that goes beyond the mere “pursuit of silence”, (2) the need to integrate additional contextual factors in the characterization and management of urban acoustic environments for public health, and (3) the need to consider the acoustic quality of indoor spaces as opposed to an outdoor-only perspective. The contributions collected in this book will hopefully trigger new questions and inform the agenda of future researchers and practitioners in the environmental acoustics domain.
