Book Beyond the Chains of Illusion

Download or read book Beyond the Chains of Illusion written by Erich Fromm and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Profound insights into Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud from the “prolific and eclectic” social theorist and bestselling author of Escape from Freedom (The Washington Post). According to renowned psychoanalyst Erich Fromm, three people shaped the essential character of the twentieth century: Albert Einstein, Karl Marx, and Sigmund Freud. While the first two figures had a great physical and political impact on the world, Fromm believes that Freud had an even deeper impact, because he changed how we think about ourselves. Beyond the Chains of Illusion is one of Fromm’s most autobiographical works, as Fromm not only comments on the ideas of Freud and Marx, but also crystallizes his own theories on social character and unconscious values. The book brilliantly summarizes Fromm’s ideas on how culture and society shape our behavior. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Erich Fromm including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the author’s estate.

Book Illusions of Emancipation

Download or read book Illusions of Emancipation written by Joseph P. Reidy and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As students of the Civil War have long known, emancipation was not merely a product of Lincoln's proclamation or of Confederate defeat in April 1865. It was a process that required more than legal or military action. With enslaved people fully engaged as actors, emancipation necessitated a fundamental reordering of a way of life whose implications stretched well beyond the former slave states. Slavery did not die quietly or quickly, nor did freedom fulfill every dream of the enslaved or their allies. The process unfolded unevenly. In this sweeping reappraisal of slavery's end during the Civil War era, Joseph P. Reidy employs the lenses of time, space, and individuals' sense of personal and social belonging to understand how participants and witnesses coped with drastic change, its erratic pace, and its unforeseeable consequences. Emancipation disrupted everyday habits, causing sensations of disorientation that sometimes intensified the experience of reality and sometimes muddled it. While these illusions of emancipation often mixed disappointment with hope, through periods of even intense frustration they sustained the promise that the struggle for freedom would result in victory.

Book excerpt: There is no doubt that we see a failure of leadership today. Political leaders are unable to forge a path out of two wars we were led into by lies and greed. Today we see the economic system that has fueled capitalism for years is collapsing from greed and mismanagement. Much of the existing leadership has been unwilling to change, passing the costs of their selfishness and mismanagement to the next generations and the generations after them. Paradigms of the past remain only as illusions and no longer work. What does real leadership today look like? Beyond Illusion: Leading from Reality takes a hard look at what is missing in today's leadership using, as effective models, outstanding leaders in the Bible such as Nehemiah, Moses, and Jesus. If you want to be a leader today, you will find essential clues in this book as well as stories that show you how you can lead in transforming your community, nation, and in the world. + + + + + + + + "Carl is a man who hears what the Spirit is saying and places the poetry of that message for the reader to hear for himself". Book The Self Illusion

  • Author : Bruce Hood
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2012-06-15
  • ISBN : 0199969892
  • Pages : 368 pages

Download or read book The Self Illusion written by Bruce Hood and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-06-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of us believe that we are unique and coherent individuals, but are we? The idea of a "self" has existed ever since humans began to live in groups and become sociable. Those who embrace the self as an individual in the West, or a member of the group in the East, feel fulfilled and purposeful. This experience seems incredibly real but a wealth of recent scientific evidence reveals that this notion of the independent, coherent self is an illusion - it is not what it seems. Reality as we perceive it is not something that objectively exists, but something that our brains construct from moment to moment, interpreting, summarizing, and substituting information along the way. Like a science fiction movie, we are living in a matrix that is our mind. In The Self Illusion, Dr. Bruce Hood reveals how the self emerges during childhood and how the architecture of the developing brain enables us to become social animals dependent on each other. He explains that self is the product of our relationships and interactions with others, and it exists only in our brains. The author argues, however, that though the self is an illusion, it is one that humans cannot live without. But things are changing as our technology develops and shapes society. The social bonds and relationships that used to take time and effort to form are now undergoing a revolution as we start to put our self online. Social networking activities such as blogging, Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter threaten to change the way we behave. Social networking is fast becoming socialization on steroids. The speed and ease at which we can form alliances and relationships is outstripping the same selection processes that shaped our self prior to the internet era. This book ventures into unchartered territory to explain how the idea of the self will never be the same again in the online social world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way we perceive an image in a split second is influenced by our current mood, state of mind, and countless other variables. Optical illusions are a captivating way to explore the quirks and mysteries of our minds. The next time you share this test with your friends or family, you can discuss your interpretations and see how they align with your known personalities. Enjoy the fun of the test and celebrate the complexity of your personality! Optical illusions are images that trick our eyes and brains into seeing something that isn't there or seeing something that isn't there. They are fascinating because they reveal how our visual system works and how different factors such as colours, patterns, lights, shapes, angles, and movements can influence our perception. Optical illusions are classified into three types: physiological illusions, cognitive illusions, and literal illusions. Excessive stimulation of the eyes or brain, such as brightness, contrast, colour, or motion, causes physiological illusions. Cognitive illusions occur as a result of the brain's unconscious inferences based on assumptions, expectations, or prior knowledge. Physical properties of objects or scenes, such as perspective, reflection, or shadow, produce literal illusions. Optical illusions can be entertaining and fun, but they can also teach us a lot about how our eyes and brains collaborate to create our visual reality. They can also help us understand how different people perceive the same thing differently, and how different factors influence our perception. Optical illusions are an excellent way to investigate the mysteries and marvels of vision. Optical illusions provide insights into how our eyes and brains work and how they shape our perception of reality. They can also inspire us to be more creative, inquisitive, and critical of the world around us. When you come across an optical illusion, don't just look at it; try to figure out why and how it works. You may be surprised by what you find. Remember, this test is all in good fun and shouldn't be taken too seriously. Everyone is unique, and one test can't capture all the different feelings and dreams we have.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one evolves with life, there are primarily two ways a person can think: how precious this life is or this life was never about me! Beyond our illusions, the Buddhist, Advaita, and modern cutting-edge physics state that the observer is real, not the individual entity or the universe. Rather, awareness and infinite consciousness is what really exists, beyond the mirage of forms that come and go that make up our living experience (through our physical senses). The book looks at the Self or No-Self (Non-Self), the universe, contentment, happiness and sadness etc., concluding there is no perfect life or right belief system but it’s how we perceive ‘reality’ and subsequently wire our consciousness. It argues that perception is reality and we live in plural realities. How we perceive this dance of light and energy is up to our awareness, leading to a blissful or sorrowful life. The book digs into Advaita Vedanta, Physics, Philosophy, Buddhism, and Neuroscience to validate this central thesis. The basic message in this whole book is to CELEBRATE LIFE, every day should be a CELEBRATION, and think LIGHTLY OF YOURSELF AS Socrates beautifully commented I’M THE WISEST MAN ON EARTH AND I KNOW ONE THING THAT I KNOW NOTHING! – AMEN
