Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Graybar had all of the trappings of a financially successful existence; literally, living the American dream. As he reached his late 30's he was stunned by the realization that his life felt incredibly empty and seemingly without purpose. While experimenting with a self-designed combination of meditation techniques that he used to escape the stresses of corporate life, he stumbled upon a perceptional gateway of sorts in 1993. Through this gateway Graybar learns that communication with three advanced souls is possible. Beyond the Broken Gate is a chronicle of Graybar's search to find meaning in his discovery and the very purpose of life.

Book excerpt: Born to serve. Trained to lead. Can a man of two species bridge the critical gap between his peoples? 2454. Micah Trace’s half-human heart races as his expedition approaches Earth. Taking leadership of a one-way-trip from Ceres, he fears the memory of a centuries-old mass abduction means they’ll face a hostile reception. And his desperate claim of a shared ancestry falls on deaf ears when the traumatized Earthers greet them with suspicion, capture, and interrogation. With relations treading a knife’s edge, the offworld ambassador finally proves his genetic roots and convinces the nervous population to repair the stargate and reconnect their worlds. But some resent alien interference in the planet’s affairs, and Micah suspects that they may be willing to kill to ensure his mission’s doom. Can the hybrid herald unite his two species before the past destroys their future? The Two Gates is the thrilling second novel in the science fiction Traceverse saga. Book excerpt: A fantastic page-turner by Emerson Hough, an American author best known for writing western stories and historical novels. Excerpt "The populace of Spring Valley, largely assembled in the shade of the awnings which served as shelter against an ardent June sun, remained cold to the foregoing challenge. It had been repeated more than once by a stout, middle-aged man in shirt sleeves and a bent straw hat, who still turned a truculent gaze this side and that, taking in the straggling buildings which lined the public square—a quadrangle which had for its center the brick courthouse, surrounded by a plat of scorched and faded greensward. At his side walked a taller though younger man, grinning amiably."

Book Beyond the Broken Statues

Download or read book Beyond the Broken Statues written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary aim of this anthology is to present in English translation and chronologically arranged representative authors who illustrate the development of this genre in Greece from the beginning of the mid-1800s to 1950. Since literature is also the product of an individual country with its own political and cultural history, it is only natural that the short story in Greece possessed its own distinct characteristics. The stories chosen for this volume, therefore, bring to the reader a greater understanding both of the Greek temperament and of its special contribution to consciousness and literature.

Book Mapping Beyond Measure

Download or read book Mapping Beyond Measure written by Simon Ferdinand and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last century a growing number of visual artists have been captivated by the entwinements of beauty and power, truth and artifice, and the fantasy and functionality they perceive in geographical mapmaking. This field of "map art" has moved into increasing prominence in recent years yet critical writing on the topic has been largely confined to general overviews of the field. In Mapping Beyond Measure Simon Ferdinand analyzes diverse map-based works of painting, collage, film, walking performance, and digital drawing made in Britain, Japan, the Netherlands, Ukraine, the United States, and the former Soviet Union, arguing that together they challenge the dominant modern view of the world as a measurable and malleable geometrical space. This challenge has strong political ramifications, for it is on the basis of modernity's geometrical worldview that states have legislated over social space; that capital has coordinated global markets and exploited distant environments; and that powerful cartographic institutions have claimed exclusive authority in mapmaking. Mapping Beyond Measure breaks fresh ground in undertaking a series of close readings of significant map artworks in sustained dialogue with spatial theorists, including Peter Sloterdijk, Zygmunt Bauman, and Michel de Certeau. In so doing Ferdinand reveals how map art calls into question some of the central myths and narratives of rupture through which modern space has traditionally been imagined and establishes map art's distinct value amid broader contemporary shifts toward digital mapping.
