It is otherwise with the native of Hindostan. The Black Waters are to him those that cut off from happiness and home the criminals of that vast region to which he belongs. Beyond the Black Waters lie the Andaman Islands, where, at the present time, about thirteen thousand convicts of both sexes - thieves, murderers, and murderesses - endure the punishment of exile, the due reward of their crimes. A kind of mysterious pall seems to hang over the isles beyond the Black Waters. The convicts are under Government protection and Government control; nor can there be communication with them (at any rate with those confined in jail) without Government permission. The criminals are not treated harshly; the place of their exile is fruitful and fair. Nature smiles upon the Andaman Islands; it is man, guilty man, who seems to have forgotten how to smile. Book excerpt: Tucker (1821-93) was a prolific writer for adults and children who used the pseudonym A.L.O.E. (A Lady of England). Late in life she spent a period as a volunteer missionary in India where she died. Her father was twice elected chairman of the East India Company and she had a secular upbringing in London, her first writings being poems and plays to amuse the family. In 1847 she took charge of the education of her brother's three children and her earliest published work The Claremont Tales (1852) was, she said, "originally composed for young children under my charge". Her work as a children's writer was imbued with her Evangelical religious beliefs and most of her stories were allegories with a clear moral which were rendered with a degree of realism. Much of her output of over 150 titles appeared first in magazines before being collected into books and she often devoted the proceeds from her writing to missionary or charity work. Her realistic portrayals of the poor were undoubtedly drawn from her experience as a workhouse visitor. In 1875, aged 54 and having taught herself Hindustani, she set out for India where she worked as a self-supporting volunteer missionary to Amritsar, Punjab, through the Indian Female Normal School and Instruction Society. Three years later she moved to nearby Batala where she worked in a boys' school and as a teacher of Christian beliefs to native women. Many of her most interesting stories are set in India and some were translated into Indian languages. This work, which includes two illustrations, was first published in 1890.

"Kim" is and adventure novel about the orphaned son of an Irish soldier and a poor Irish mother who have both died in poverty. Living a vagabond existence in India under British rule in the late 19th century, Kim earns his living by begging and running small errands on the streets of Lahore. "The Just So Stories" are a highly fantasized origin stories, especially for differences among animals, they are among Kipling's best known works. Book excerpt: [Illustrated with over one hundred maps, photos and portraits, of the battles of the Indian Mutiny] By 1857, British power in India had been largely undisputed for almost fifty years, however, the armies of the East India Company were largely recruited from the native people of India. This inherent weakness would be exposed during the events of the Indian Mutiny of 1857-1858, as the Sepoy soldiers turned against their erstwhile British employers. The events that led up to the Revolt were many and varied, including British highhandedness, ignorance of local customs and religious values, and incendiary propaganda. It is generally argued that the spark that lit the flame was the rumour that the newly issued rifle cartridges would be greased either with tallow, derived from beef and thereby offensive to Hindus, or lard, derived from pork and thereby offensive to Muslims. The enraged soldiers mutinied across a number of Indian States, taking Delhi, besieging Lucknow, and revolting in Oudh. The rebellion was eventually quelled in 1858 however, the effects of the Mutiny were far ranging and important. The East Indian Company was dissolved and the British government set about reorganising all facets of its power in India from the political to the administration and, most pointedly, the military. Although India would not gain its Independence until 150 years later, the events of the Indian Mutiny stayed in the folk consciousness of the country, a number of the leaders were lionized in certain circles, and a measure of nascent nationhood was born. Of the many books written on the event, few are as well respected, accurate, frequently read or cited as the six volume history produced by two ex-British Army officers, Sir John Kaye and Colonel George Malleson, who had both erved extensively in India. This first volume deals with the introductory causes and initial stages of the revolt to May 1857.
