Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beyond the Black Waters: A Tale The title of this work would probably convey no definite idea to the minds of most Europeans; it might be considered as merely a figurative expression. It is otherwise with the native of Hindostan. The Black Waters are to him those that cut off from happiness and home the criminals of that vast region to which he belongs. Beyond the Black Waters lie the Andaman Islands, where, at the present time, about thirteen thousand convicts of both sexes - thieves, murderers, and murderesses - endure the punishment of exile, the due reward of their crimes. A kind of mysterious pall seems to hang over the isles beyond the Black Waters. The convicts are under Government protection and Government control; nor can there be communication with them (at any rate with those confined in jail) without Government permission. The criminals are not treated harshly; the place of their exile is fruitful and fair. Nature smiles upon the Andaman Islands; it is man, guilty man, who seems to have forgotten how to smile. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Black Waters: Exile and Redemption in the Andaman Islands," the author delves into a world unknown to most Europeans but deeply ingrained in the consciousness of the people of Hindostan. The Black Waters symbolize the barrier that separates criminals from their homeland and happiness. This figurative expression takes on a literal meaning in the minds of the natives, who understand it as referring to the Andaman Islands—an archipelago where thousands of convicts, including thieves, murderers, and murderesses, are exiled to endure the consequences of their crimes. The Andaman Islands, shrouded in an aura of mystery, are tightly controlled by the government. Communication with the convicts is restricted and can only occur with official permission. However, despite the punitive nature of their exile, the criminals are not subjected to harsh treatment. The islands themselves are fertile and beautiful, with nature's bounties on full display. It is the guilt-ridden hearts of the convicts that have forgotten how to smile, casting a somber shadow over the landscape. While the narrative touches upon the desolation of the exiles, it also highlights a more uplifting aspect—the stories of the Karens and their traditions. These accounts, as well as the remarkable individual who stands out among them like a guiding light in the darkness, are not fictional creations but based on real-life events. The author seeks not only to evoke compassion for the sinners but also to ignite admiration for the saints, and to foster a stronger and more practical interest in England and America regarding missionary efforts in the East. Beyond the Black Waters: Exile and Redemption in the Andaman Islands" offers readers a captivating exploration of a little-known world and seeks to provoke a range of emotions, from pity to admiration, while shedding light on the importance of missionary work in foreign lands.

Book excerpt: "You‟ll see it, Mr. Lawrence, you‟ll see it-everything will be changed in England now that the old king is dead and the sailor William on the throne. The people are mad for changes, and shout for reform, as if it meant bread to their butter, or rather beef-steaks and plum-pudding.""But the Duke-" began Mr. Lawrence; but Dr. Pinfold cut him short ere he could finish the sentence."The Iron Duke is facing the mob like a man, but he‟ll have to give way to popular excitement. Westminster is not Waterloo; let Londoners roar as they will, he can‟t say, "Up, Guards, and at them.‟ The Duke can no more stem the current than he can stop with his field-marshal‟s baton one of those new-fangled monster engines which crushed out poor Huskisson‟s life."

Book Beyond the Black Waters Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Beyond the Black Waters Illustrated Edition written by Charlotte Maria Tucker (a L O E ) and published by Echo Library. This book was released on 2019-06-20 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tucker (1821-93) was a prolific writer for adults and children who used the pseudonym A.L.O.E. (A Lady of England). Late in life she spent a period as a volunteer missionary in India where she died. Her father was twice elected chairman of the East India Company and she had a secular upbringing in London, her first writings being poems and plays to amuse the family. In 1847 she took charge of the education of her brother's three children and her earliest published work The Claremont Tales (1852) was, she said, "originally composed for young children under my charge". Her work as a children's writer was imbued with her Evangelical religious beliefs and most of her stories were allegories with a clear moral which were rendered with a degree of realism. Much of her output of over 150 titles appeared first in magazines before being collected into books and she often devoted the proceeds from her writing to missionary or charity work. Her realistic portrayals of the poor were undoubtedly drawn from her experience as a workhouse visitor. In 1875, aged 54 and having taught herself Hindustani, she set out for India where she worked as a self-supporting volunteer missionary to Amritsar, Punjab, through the Indian Female Normal School and Instruction Society. Three years later she moved to nearby Batala where she worked in a boys' school and as a teacher of Christian beliefs to native women. Many of her most interesting stories are set in India and some were translated into Indian languages. This work, which includes two illustrations, was first published in 1890.

As three pageants leading up to her wedding turn unexpectedly deadly, and the enigma of its true purpose looms, Zaria is torn between her long-desired fate as Sea Queen and the infuriating boy who tells her that everything her people know is a lie. ******** Please be advised: In this dystopian series the protagonist grows in a manner similar to characters such as Sansa Stark.
