Book Modern Classics Beyond the Pleasure Principle

Download or read book Modern Classics Beyond the Pleasure Principle written by Sigmund Freud and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2003-07-29 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: in Freud's view we are driven by the desire for pleasure as well as by the desire to avoid pain. But the pursuit of pleasure has never been a simple thing. Pleasure can be a form of fear, a form of memory and a way of avoiding reality. Above all, as these essays show with remarkable eloquence, pleasure is a way in which we repeat ourselves. The essays collected in this volume explore, in Freud's uniquely subtle and accessible style, the puzzles of pleasure and morality - the enigmas of human development.

Book excerpt: Asceticism, so it is argued in this volume, is a modern category. The ubiquitous cult of the body, of fitness and diet equally evokes the ongoing success of ascetic practices and beliefs. Nostalgic memories of hardship and discipline in the army, youth movements or boarding schools remain as present as the fashionable irritation with the presumed modern-day laziness. In the very texture of contemporary culture, age-old asceticism proves to be remarkably alive. Old ascetic forms were remoulded to serve modern desires for personal authenticity, an authenticity that disconnected asceticism in the course of the nineteenth century from two traditions that had underpinned it since classical antiquity: the public, republican austerity of antiquity and the private, religious asceticism of Christianity. Exploring various aspects such as the history of the body, of aesthetics, science, and social thought in several European countries (Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria and Belgium), the authors show that modern asceticism remains a deeply ambivalent category. Apart from self-realisation, classical and religious examples continue to haunt the ascetic mind.

Book On Freud s Beyond the Pleasure Principle

Download or read book On Freud s Beyond the Pleasure Principle written by Salman Akhtar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle constitutes a major landmark and a real turning point in the evolution of psychoanalytic theory. Pushing aside the primacy of the tension-discharge-gratification model of mental dynamics, this work introduced the notion of a "daemonic force" within all human beings that slowly but insistently seeks psychic inactivity, inertia, and death. Politely dismissed by some as a pseudo-biological speculation and rapturously espoused by others as a bold conceptual advance, "death instinct" became a stepping stone to the latter conceptualizations of mind's attacks on itself, negative narcissism, addiction to near-death, and the utter destruction of meaning in some clinical situations. The concept also served as a bridge between the quintessentially Western psychoanalysis and the Eastern perspectives on life and death. These diverse and rich connotations of the proposal are elucidated in On Freud's "Beyond the Pleasure Principle". Other consequences of Freud's 1920 paper - namely, the marginalization of ego instincts and the "upgrading" of aggression in the scheme of things - are also addressed.

This book is not just a bunch of nice ideas that are only good for the mind, it is an invitation to experience Life totally, and live fully, unapologetically, shamelessly as You. This book is for those who are either intrigued by sex but feel a little shy and perhaps have never experienced an orgasm, and for those who are very open yet have the intuition that there must be more to sexuality. And forgive me for running ahead, but yes, there is always more to sexuality. This books is for those who have endless spiritual thirst and those who wish to feel more connected to their true Self in every moment of their life. In the modern day world, we tend to think that sex and spirit are separate from each other. Or, that in order to access the spirit, we need to transcend sex. With this book, I want to serve the healing of the split that we have created between sex and spirit. This split is what causes disconnection, shame, guilt and judgment around something that is the most powerful creative force that moves through human beings - our sexual energy. With this book, I want to reveal the tantric perspective of what is really possible for each human being in this Life. With this book I want to invite you on a journey that will take us through pleasure beyond pleasure. Tantra teaches us to live fully. When someone chooses the path of Tantra, it means they choose to go all the way. To live Tantra means not to shy away from any of the aspects of our life. Book The Penguin Freud Reader

Download or read book The Penguin Freud Reader written by Sigmund Freud and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-01-26 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here are the essential ideas of psychoanalytic theory, including Freud's explanations of such concepts as the Id, Ego and Super-Ego, the Death Instinct and Pleasure Principle, along with classic case studies like that of the Wolf Man. Adam Phillips's marvellous selection provides an ideal overview of Freud's thought in all its extraordinary ambition and variety. Psychoanalysis may be known as the 'talking cure', yet it is also and profoundly, a way of reading. Here we can see Freud's writings as readings and listenings, deciphering the secrets of the mind, finding words for desires that have never found expression. Much more than this, however, The Penguin Freud Reader presents a compelling reading of life as we experience it today, and a way in to the work of one of the most haunting writers of the modern age.
