Book excerpt: The topic which is to be examined is "Lewis's Concept of God" rather than "The Theology of Lewis" for several reasons. In the first place the latter, being far more general, is usually extended to include a number of areas in addition to the doctrine of God, whereas this thesis is much more limited in scope. More significantly, however, the topic "The Theology of Lewis" might imply a systematized doctrine and a specialized vocabulary which, while present in the writings of formal theologians, do not at all exist in Lewis's works. For he was not a scientific theologian; he was a speculative layman. Though his scholarly training is certainly not to be questioned in his own area of specialization (Medieval and Renaissance literature), in the field of theology it is not Lewis's academic qualifications but the profundity of his personal insights which entitles him to speak as an authority. The intention is not to discredit Lewis as "theologian"; he is being taken at his own word. ... Yet there is a far more important reason for not writing on "The Theology of Lewis," and one which needs to be clarified in order to avoid a misunderstanding concerning all of his writings and his attitude toward the subject of theology. A writer might, if he so chose, attempt to present Lewis's ideas in the form of a systematic theology; in the case of some writers this project would be feasible and, perhaps, a helpful postscript to their works. Regarding C.S. Lewis, however, one should never undertake this kind of study, for it is not conceivable that he should have written a systematic theology under any circumstances. This is not due merely to his lack of academic training in the area of theology; it is characteristic of his religious perspective itself. ... Just as one could not hope to give an adequate representation of Lewis's ideas by categorizing the doctrinal distinctions accepted by more systematic theologians, so one cannot take a particular doctrine for special treatment wholly in isolation from the others. Thus this thesis is on the topic "Lewis's Concept of God" as opposed to "The Theology of Lewis," but not to the exclusion of other areas of theology. When matters relevant to the central theme are being discussed, many other topics in theology will also be dealt with. In the thesis, then, it is not as though an artist were painting only a small portion of the landscape. It is as though he were painting the entire landscape, but with special focus and attention on the particular portion which most interested him and seemed to demand the greatest emphasis. Surely such attention and emphasis are required of anyone who would attempt to understand Lewis. For what can be more essential in the thought of one who discourses about God than his concept of God? Previous books and dissertations on Lewis have contributed significantly to an understanding of his writings, but none has dealt at any length with his concept of God -- the central category in the world-view of any theist. In order that maximum attention may be directed to the thesis topic itself, book summaries and biographical details concerning Lewis will be given only where pertinent to the subject under discussion. Thus it will be assumed that the reader already possesses a basic knowledge of C.S. Lewis. In this analysis, emphasis will be placed primarily on Lewis's own writings, with works about him assuming a subordinate role. Some further observations need to be made, however, concerning the thought that lay behind the writings of Lewis, before turning specifically to "Lewis's Concept of God."--Leaves 1-2,4-5.
