The knowledge creation metaphor differs from both the acquisition and the participation metaphors. In a nutshell trialogical approaches seek to engage learners in joint work with shared objects and artefacts mediated by collaboration technology. The theoretical underpinnings stem from different origins, including Bereiter and Scardamalia’s theory on knowledge building and Engeström’s activity theory. The authors in this collection introduce key concepts and techniques, explain tools designed and developed to support knowledge creation, and report results from case studies in specific contexts. The book chapters integrate theoretical, methodological, empirical and technological research, to elaborate the empirical findings and to explain the design of the knowledge creation tools. In the last ten years, the formal study of the psychology of science has also emerged. The psychology of science focuses on the individual scientist, influenced by intelligence, motivation, personality, and the development of scientific interest, thought, ability, and achievement over a lifespan. Science can be defined as explicitly and systematically testing hypotheses. Defined more broadly, science includes wider processes, such as theory construction and the hypothesis testing seen in children and "non-scientific" adults. Most prior work in the study of science has emphasized the role of explicit reasoning; however, contemporary research in psychology emphasizes the importance of implicit processes in decision-making and choice and assumes that the performance of many tasks involves a complex relationship between implicit and explicit processes. Psychology of Science brings together contributions from leaders in the emerging discipline of the psychology of science with other experts on the roles of implicit and explicit processes in thinking. Highlighting the role of implicit processes in the creation of scientific knowledge, this volume links the psychology of science to many strands of psychology , including cognitive, social, and developmental psychology, as well as neuroscience. Book excerpt: This book offers a detailed account of the employment promises made to local East Londoners when the Summer Olympic Games 2012 were awarded to London, as well as an examination of how those promises had morphed into the Olympic Labor market jamboree from which local communities were excluded. Regarding the global job market of London, this study provides a nuanced empirical view on how the world’s biggest mega event was experienced and endured in terms employment by its immediate hosts, in one of the UK’s poorest, most ethnically complex, and transient areas. The data has been collected through ethnographic observation and interviews with local residents, and expert interviews with the Olympic delivery professionals. Using Bourdieusian theory of contested capital, the findings provide an important bearing on the reproduction of inequality in the local labor markets of Olympic host cities.

Book excerpt: Employees exit an organization with 80% of the knowledge they have acquired without transferring it to others. This colossal loss of intellectual assets is even more in terms of parent to child legacy transfer. Several factors may have contributed to this immense generational memory loss. First, the knowledge seekers do not know what to do on how to influence the knowledge sources to share their skills and experiences and may not even understand the characteristics of the knowledge they intend to access from the knowledge sources. Second, these intellectual assets such as skills and experiences they intend to access give the knowledge sources their comparative advantage in the society and worst still, they are not on the pages of procedures or other documented format, but mainly domicile in the heads of the possessors and hence not visible to others. Third, people also regard their skills and experiences as invaluable intellectual assets and hence do not want to easily share it with others. These are some of the constraints knowledge seekers face, whether in an organization or the society while trying to access the information they require in creating value in their respective domains. Eventually, the legacies transferred to the knowledge seekers fall short of what would have been transferred if the knowledge seeker knows otherwise. This book bridges this gap by providing a strategic and systematic approach on how a knowledge seeker may apply social interaction variables and its hierarchical effect on knowledge transfer to influence a knowledge source to share his or her intellectual assets that he or she might not ordinarily be willing to share with any knowledge seeker.

Informed by various theoretical perspectives (eg., critical theory, neo-Marxist, poststructuralist, postcolonial, feminist, critical literacy, Bourdieuian, Foucauldian) key Deakin University scholars pursued their commitments to social justice though education. A certain criticality characterised their work. Individually and collectively they created a national and international reputation for critical scholarship in education. Since that time (the 1980s and 90s), however, most of the Deakin ‘mafia’ have moved to senior academic posts elsewhere in Australian and internationally and their influence in educational research and discourse now continues as members of the ‘Deakin diaspora’. This collection is an account of the stories of many of these scholars. It will provide valuable reading for any scholar of education who is particularly interested in critical pedagogy and the critical project in education more generally.
